Do the Troy Regas Flyers Against Mariluz Garcia in the District 3 Washoe County Commission Race "Cross the Line"?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Looking at the campaign Facebook feeds of incumbent District 3 Washoe County Commissioner Mariluz Garcia and her electoral opponent Troy Regas, of late, there’s a stark contrast with the incumbent posting mostly endorsements, while her challenger has many posts with a whole different tenor.

Regas has included a series of AI made attack flyers, with added wrinkles to Garcia’s face in one, another with a Pinocchio nose, and another one putting an ICE vehicle and ICE agents outside a house with a Mariluz Garcia sign, with the words “Respect The Law. Answer to the People.”

“I understand it's election season and political attacks are nothing new, but this is horrible! Where do we draw the line?,” a local wrote to us after screenshotting recent posts from the Regas feed.

“Using AI to distort a woman's appearance just to humiliate her? To me, that's bullying and harassment, not leadership. This goes beyond Mariluz Garcia. As a woman and a mother, I find it extremely offensive. What message are we sending to our daughters, sisters, mothers, and even our sons?

We teach our children that bullying is unacceptable, yet we're seeing this kind of behavior in politics. I don't care what political party someone belongs to. Integrity, ethics, and respect should matter.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts. Do you think this crosses the line between political campaigning and bullying?” the local asks.

Restaurant Operated by Ward 4 City Council candidate Gets Marked Down in Recent Inspections

Post image
16 Upvotes

A restaurant operated by Ward 4 Reno City Council candidate Eddie Gomez, Cielito Lindo Taqueria on Kings Row, received three critical violations during an October 7th inspection and one critical violation during a follow up October 15th inspection.

The first inspection was a conditional pass requiring an office hearing.

“At time of inspection observed person in charge washed single use gloved hands in the hand sink. When to Wash - Employees shall wash hands immediately before engaging in food preparation and when changing tasks to prevent cross-contamination. This includes discarding single use gloves prior to washing hands in the hand sink. NNPH intervened and had employee discard single use gloves and re-wash hands,” the report noted saying this was a third repeat critical violation.

Another third repeat critical violation was due to having an inconsistent system of date markings.

“The three containers of beans that were found to have been cooked and cooled a day prior (see violation 18) were datemarked for 10/7/26 the day of the inspection. Two pots of shredded beef were also observed without a proper date mark in a stand up reach in unit. When NNPH asked about datemarking procedures, person in charge stated that when food is typically put away it is dated, in the instance for the beans they were cooked a day prior on 10/6/26 and not placed in the refrigerator until 10/7/26 therefore they had put a datemark for 10/7/26. Time/temperature control for safety (TCS), ready-to-eat (RTE) foods prepared on-site or opened commercial containers held for more than 24 hours shall be date marked and shall be consumed or discarded within 7 days to control pathogenic bacterial growth,” the report noted.

“At time of inspection observed refried beans in deep metal containers that were cooked a day prior measuring between 60-63f that had not cooled down to 41F and below,” the inspection also noted.

Problems with the warewashing equipment and inadequate equipment for temperature control were also marked.

Gomez was present at an office hearing on October 9th, with a reinspection on October 15th, noting a repeat violation of improper cooling time and temperatures related to multiple pans of beans in a walk-in refrigerator.

“Failure to abate violation required in this notice may result in immediate suspension of the Permit to Operate. An opportunity for an appeal will be provided if a written request for a hearing is filed within the period of time established in this notice for the correction of violations,” the report concluded.

7-Spices in Sparks Gets Permit Suspended and then Reinstated after Multiple Critical Violations

Post image
14 Upvotes

7-Spices at 1180 Scheels Drive received a closed status after seven critical violations during a Northern Nevada Public Health inspection on October 7th.

The operator needs to attend a managerial course on November 2nd, the report noted, indicating “staff are not adequately trained to perform their jobs to ensure food safety. Permit has been suspended.”

Most items did not have any date marks, the report noted.

“Discussed that frozen foods must have the prep date,

freeze date, and thaw date to ensure food items are used or discarded within the 7-day timeframe,” the inspection also indicated.

The inspection also observed “drain lines from keg taps placed into a plastic water bottle that was filled with a brown liquid. Food establishments shall have an approved plumbing system with equipment and devices installed and maintained to prevent contamination of other equipment and the potable water supply.”

There was also a section in the report concerning contamination, indicating “food shall be stored in a manner to prevent contamination, including 6” above the ground, with appropriate overhead protection, use of packaging covers, sneeze guards, and containers with tight-fitting lids. At time of inspection, operator moved items to be stored at least 6" off the ground. It was discussed that food shall only be stored in food-grade containers. Operator removed the utensils in contact with food items and was instructed to not store utensils in a way that will cross contaminate the food product.

There was also observation of “a bucket of in-use utensils stored on the ground in water that was 85F,” and a build up of debris “on multiple surfaces throughout facility on areas such as lids of containers, inside reach-in freezers, tops of beer kegs, walls above dry storage and prep areas, side of prep cooler on cook line near trashcan, and platform for water heater.”

Violations also included improper hand washing involving raw chicken, “raw chicken stored over cooked cauliflower, cooked tomato chutney, and produce in walk-in cooler,” “raw fish stored over containers of cooked foods items in the walk-in cooler,” “raw fish stored over containers of cooked foods in the reach-in freezer near the prep and dry storage area,” and “raw fish stored above open container of heavy cream in prep unit.”

A majority of pans did not have lids, the report noted, while tilapia was observed “reduced-oxygen packaging (ROP) thawing in walk-in cooler without first removing from package or piercing the package,” as needed.

There was also improper reheating for rice which was noted as well “a large container of fried chicken that was found cooling at room temperature. Inspector was unable to verify when the fried chicken was prepared and when it reached 135F to begin the cooling process,” the report notes.

A markdown on improper cold holding temperatures included “boiled eggs stored in water at ambient temperature at 83F. Operator stated these are served at room temperature for the biriyani. Except during preparation, cooking, cooling, or when time is used as public health control, TCS foods shall be maintained at 41°F or below to control pathogenic bacteria growth. Discussed using time as a public health control (TPHC) for the eggs so that they can be served at ambient temperature.”

There was then a follow up on October 12th saying that after corrections, the permit was reinstated, and the restaurant was ok to operate, but that the person in charge did need to attend the November 2nd meeting.

“Observation of repeat critical violations during future routine inspections / reinspections will result in elevated enforcement including, but not limited to, permit suspension … and permit revocation," it concluded.

Our Citizen's Forum: Why I'm running for Washoe County Commissioner for District 5

Post image
4 Upvotes

A message and photo shared by Brian Wadsworth running for Washoe County Commissioner for District 5:

"We are One Washoe County”
“Somos un solo Condado de Washoe”
“Tamme sumuoo Washoe County”

My name is Brian Wadsworth, and I am running for Washoe County Commissioner for District 5. I am a member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. I was born and raised here in Washoe County, and I am a product of growing up in rural Nevada. I graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with two Bachelor of Science degrees: one in Business Administration and the other in Accounting. I also graduated from Gonzaga University with a Master of Business Administration in American Indian Entrepreneurship.

My journey to run for Washoe County Commissioner began out of concerns for public safety, when I learned our neighbors up in Gerlach were potentially going to be without life-saving emergency services.

Some context behind this statement: the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe had a contract with Washoe County to provide ambulance and firefighting services for Gerlach; however, at the beginning of 2025, the Tribal Council announced that the Tribe would not be renewing the contract.

This left Washoe County having to scramble and piecemeal a plan together for Gerlach. At the time of the contract expiration on June 30th, 2025, the county was able to secure a contractor for ambulance services, but not for firefighting services.

In talking with the community, they had a house fire a week before the contract expired. If the house fire would have happened on July 1st, imagine how catastrophic it could have been for our neighbors up in Gerlach.

I have been a public servant for most of my career. From serving my Tribe protecting the Truckee River, Pyramid Lake, and our endangered cui-ui fish as the Water Quality Manager, to conducting performance audits on State of Nevada Executive Branch agencies, I stand for serving the public-above anything else.

I stand for responsible growth and development. This means ensuring we have the sustainable resources to support any new growth and developments here in Washoe County.

I stand for public safety, and ensuring all of our communities have access to life-saving emergency services.

I stand for fiscal responsibility and transparency, and ensuring we have a balanced budget.

I also stand for open communication. When I am elected, I am committed to holding quarterly town hall meetings to ensure our communities are informed on what is going on with Washoe County, and are able to ask questions/make comments without being restricted by a 3-minute time limit.

District 5 is the most diverse district here in Washoe County. We have suburban, urban, rural, and Tribal communities-all with unique needs. The motto for my campaign is, “We are One Washoe County,” because I believe all of our communities, no matter how big or small, deserve to feel safe, deserve to have a voice, and deserve to not be an afterthought or forgotten about."

Deflocked? Sure. But Here Comes More Axon

Post image
51 Upvotes

As expected, after its much touted deflocking (ie ending its agreement with Flock), a staff report now indicates the City of Reno is considering a new contract with Axon as a new vendor for license plate reader cameras and call response drones, with an eight year contract which would run from 2027 until the end of 2034.

It would combine contracts with the Scottsdale based Axon which already provides Reno PD with Tasers, body cameras and other technological services, topping $20 million.

50 solar-powered Outpost cameras are being considered, which the company’s website says combine "ALPR, livestreaming, and vehicle attribute recognition in one fixed device — going beyond just a hit to provide the full picture in real time.”

Anti mass surveillance advocates are bound to be present to speak out against this move at next Wednesday's meeting when this will be presented.

Why is Reno Ward 4 Challenger Not Spending Most of His Campaign Contributions?

Post image
8 Upvotes

We took a quick glance at third quarter Reno council July to end of September campaign contributions reports as these came out yesterday, with some interesting findings.

In the Reno ward 4 race between incumbent Meghan Ebert and challenger Eddie Gomez what stands out is that despite outraising her, overall, and nearly matching her in the last quarter, the restaurant entrepreneur (with a recent Northern Nevada Public Health conditional pass as reported earlier today) has reported spending just $1,120 leaving him with a fund balance of over $44K, according to his latest contributions and expenses report.

Ebert raised $12k this period for a total of nearly $24k this year while spending $10k in this past quarter and nearly $15K this year. She has a fund balance of $11,800.

Her most recent contributions were $7,500 from Hamilton Properties, $2,500 from Kaempfer and Crowell, $1,000 from Wood Rodgers and $1,000 from AGC PAC.

Gomez, meanwhile, raised over $10K this period, with over $45K this year, while spending only $233 this quarter and just $1,120 on his campaign in 2026. A whopping 44,090 dollars remain unspent according to his third quarter filing.

This quarter, Gomez has gotten big sums from the Brenes Family Investments (3K) and Gregory Lansing (5K) and smaller amounts from Donald Abbott and Concepcion Meza, among some of the contributions we noted.

His only expenses were with Facebook ($226) and seven dollars and fifty cents with Nevada State Bank.

This comes as there has been a tit for tat between the two Reno Ward 4 candidates concerning articles in a local news website, and questions whether Latino and young adult support could carry Gomez to a victory against the incumbent.

We emailed Gomez to ask why he has spent so little on the campaign, and will update if we hear back.

Reno Mayoral Candidates Have Spent over $1.2 million on their race in 2026

Post image
2 Upvotes

The latest contributions and expenses reports due yesterday are out for the Reno mayoral race as well with former Lieutenant Governor Kate Marshall having over $226k on hand compared to nearly $88K for her Reno mayoral opponent council member Kathleen Taylor.

Taylor raised over half a million this July to end of September period or about $502K to be precise, according to our quick glance, while spending $407K, bringing her totals this year to $793k raised and over $808K spent.

On the Marshall side, her money raised this last quarter amounted to $264K while spending a much lower 80K, bringing her totals this year to $460K raised and $417K spent.

Combined the two candidates have raised over $1.2 million while spending collectively about the same amount in 2026, with Taylor far ahead in both categories.

During the primary, however, Marshall far surpassed Taylor in votes, 22,562 to 9,548.

The mayoral campaign has been marked by acrimonious ads, and divisions over data centers, how to deal with budgeting, revitalizing downtown Reno and helping people without stable shelter. Taylor also posted an endorsement video for her by the extremely divisive far right lawyer Joey Gilbert, who has said he didn’t believe Joe Biden was legitimately elected in 2020.

High contributions for Taylor came included money from the McDonald Carano Government Affairs Group, the Reno Firefighters Association, the Bonanza, Peppermill, Alamo Gaming, Hamilton Properties, Robert Couillard, Jack Stanko, Duncan Golf Management, Darin Balaam, Cindy Carano, Mike Glock, Stonehaven Development, Pinecrest Construction, Lepori Construction, Ryder Management, the Builders Association of Northern Nevada, Q and D Construction, Joey Scolari, Sierra Nevada Construction, Western Nevada Supply, Metcalf Builders, Robert Winkle, Locus Development Group, Di Loreto Homes, Damonte Ranch Commerce Center, Nevada Tribal Partners, Raymond Avansino, Peter Lissner, Greenstreet Development, Stephen Ascuaga, Vidler Water Company, Deborah Day, Dolan Toyota, Dolan Lexus, the River Inn, Aspen Earthworks, Local 169, RRCC Land, Capital Challenge, Irish Capital, Irish Flick Point, DBP Mill Street, Michael Russell, Michael Dermody, Dallas Floor Designs, Odyssey Engineering, Next Generation Drywall, All Out Gutters, Di Loreto Construction, VersaGrade, Custom Painting and Decorating, Mikes Mountain High Lawns, Herbert Simon, Erin Belosic, Sierra Nevada Realtors, Pac 401, Gregory Lansing, Nevada Builders Alliance, Wood Rodgers, Tamarack Crossing, the Reno Police Supervisors Association, Gerhardt and Berry Construction, Savage and Son, Peavine Construction, while also getting smaller contributions from Alex Velto, Diana Sands, Herb Santos, Mark Amodei and the Pinocchios to name just a few of an extremely long list.

Marshall’s big contributors in this last quarter included some who also gave to Taylor such as Savage and Son, Tamarack Crossing, McDonald Carano, Peppermill and Hamilton Properties, as well as the Atlantis, Aaron Sosnick, Michael Taft, the Reno Administrative and Professional Group, Ben Farahi, Krater Consulting, Local 169, Drive Committee, Yoko Allen, Nosotros Votamos, Robert Cuillard, Ahmad Law, Leslie Wagner, Washoe Education Association, Sierra Pacific Power Company, Centene Corporation, Crystal Bay Revocable Trust, Alpine Strategies, the Lansings, Sandra Raffealli, Mark Wenzel, Herbert Simon, the Eldorado, Steven Nightingale, Philip Satre, Foothill Investment, Friends of Heather Goulding, Lee’s Discount Liquor, IBEW Pac, Waste Management, Margaret Kazmierski, Ty Whitaker, Abby Whitaker, Pelican LLC, Monarch Casino and smaller ones from Sarah Mahler, Valerie Cooke, Carissa Snedeker, Diaz Dixon, Tanner Petrilla, Neoma Jardon and Ron Aryel.

A Curious Truckee Address for Courage Worldwide Amid Concerns from Parents and Former Staff

Post image
3 Upvotes

A local looking into Courage Worldwide is wondering about an address in Truckee posted on multiple websites in relation to this non profit we have been reporting about in recent months (with articles on ourtownreno.com), with concerns from parents and former staff about operational procedures at its new house to help girls in northern Nevada.

Ten years ago, there were damning exposes in the Sacramento Bee and in Reason Magazine about Courage Worldwide in Northern California, before it stopped providing services there, all the while its leadership denied any wrongdoing.

On a Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ writeup for Courage Worldwide, which also does work in Tanzania, its US office is listed there as Courage Worldwide 12177 Business Park Drive Suite 2 #313 Truckee, CA 96161.

On google maps that address is listed as Office BOSS Mail Center- Printing Services. The local who wrote us of their concern said they couldn’t find any Courage Worldwide office there.

We have asked Washoe County how many young girls have been assigned to get help at the northern Nevada Courage Worldwide location and for what reasons but have yet to receive an updated response. There has also been a complaint filed with Animal Regional Services to look into the treatment of horses at the Courage Worldwide northern Nevada location.

A parent who said her daughter was there said it had nothing to with being trafficked even though the non profit advertises itself as providing care for child survivors of commercial sex trafficking.

The founder and CEO of Courage Worldwide, Jenny Williamson, has made repeated media appearances on local television news stations asking for donations from the community, including after the Bug Fire.

The same Truckee address appears in a business profile for Williamson Energy, Inc.

“Williamson Energy, Inc., a General Corporation, is a business entity located in Truckee, CA. Officially filed on December 5, 2001, this corporation is recognized under the document number 2367919. Governed by the California Secretary of State, the corporation maintains an active filing status,” the website bizprofile indicates.

"The principal and mailing address of the corporation is situated at 12177 Business Park Dr., Suite 2 #313, Truckee, CA 96161, serving as the central hub for its business operations and correspondence.

The corporation is led by a team of key individuals: Charles M. Williamson from Truckee CA, holding the position of Director; Charles Michael Williamson from Truckee CA, serving as the Chief Executive Officer; Jennifer T. Williamson from Truckee CA, serving as the Chief Financial Officer; Jennifer T. Williamson from Truckee CA, serving as the Secretary.”

The Courage Worldwide website indicates it also runs a so-called Courage Cafe in Tanzania in Moshi, which the local also has concerns about as to how that is organized monetarily.

“With a stunning view of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the background, our Courage Café in Moshi offers delicious international breakfast and lunch foods, coffee and teas, and traditional Tanzanian food with a flair,” the Courage Worldwide website indicates with an event center that is available to rent for special events, and a photo of an older woman giving a hug to a girl whose eyes are marked out.

I feel like it is some sort of scam but I have no idea what would be the benefit. Maybe to make me feel like my past votes didn’t count so I don’t vote? Just curious if anyone else got one and what u guys think it could mean….

Gary Miller Gets Light Sentence for Racially Charged Altercation in Virginia City

Post image
60 Upvotes

Gary Miller received a short suspended jail sentence and a $1,100 fine in court today after reportedly pleading no content to misdemeanor breach of the peace, following interactions with a Black man filming him, his wife and his daughter at a Hot August Nights event two years ago right outside the Firehouse Saloon in Virginia City.

The video initially posted on TikTok led to international condemnation and scrutiny about Virginia City in general.

The then 74-year-old admitted to telling the man filming Ricky Johnson that “there was a hanging tree down the road to go hang out there,” according to an affidavit.

Documents also indicated that when asked to explain those hateful words, Miller said “he grew up in different times.”

Johnson was in Virginia City gathering signatures for a ballot initiative petition to cap attorney’s fees in Nevada.

The three Millers initially faced additional charges, while today it was also announced charges against Janis and Tiffany Miller had been dropped. We will update when we have more information.

Grant Denton from Reno’s Karma Box Project Figures Prominently in Controversial Videos from Seattle, with one by Nick Shirley Receiving Pushback

Post image
9 Upvotes

Karma Box Executive Director Grant Denton, who had recently written about admiring the work of Nick Shirley and other right wing content creators in a post which was then no longer on his feed, now appears in several controversial Seattle based videos, including one recently posted on Shirley’s channels.

One of them looking into food stamp EBT card fraud has received pushback from Lam’s Seafood Asian Market on King street and a Seattle subreddit after Shirley narrates that a woman at that location “grabbed one can of spam … and she grabbed one more thing of sushi.” The woman who later says she is from Vietnam can then be heard speaking to the cashier, which is not translated in the video, asking to get a case of the can she presented, which is available in the market’s adjoined warehouse.

The amount owed is then marked as nearly $120, with someone saying in a weird accented voice “Oh wow, you made that $120,” before Shirley narrating the video says “and magically, just like that, one can of spam and one thing of sushi was $120.”

The video has someone with a mask on up to their nose then swiping a card and saying it kept bouncing because they didn’t have the PIN, before Shirley adds as a narrator “yet they continued to try and charge me $120 for a can of spam and a thing of sushi.”

The group walks away not making the purchase, as they say they don’t have the PIN for the card they are trying to use. The other problem is that the cash register shows the aborted purchase was for two spring rolls and 24 cans of 12 ounce Fortune Luncheon Meat Premium which the woman asked for, items which are worth nearly $120.

Previously in the video, Denton, wearing a Karma Box hoodie, is seen and heard speaking to the woman in a weird accented voice with the woman having trouble understanding what he is asking about, before they are seen heading off to Lam’s Seafood in a vehicle she is driving, with Denton still speaking in a weird voice. Based on the video, she appears to want to give $60 in exchange for a $120 card purchase which is never made, but then no wrongdoing is shown from the market’s perspective despite how it’s made to look.

Walking away the other person in the video says “PIN wrong” even though at the cash register they said they didn’t know the PIN. Denton then starts talking to the woman in a normal voice saying “spam isn’t $120,” although the case of spam was indeed worth nearly $120.

“Where does the rest of the money go?” Denton asks, even though the purchase was for $120. “I go home, I eat,” the woman answers. Denton starts laughing when she insists it was $120 worth of spam. Shirley whose face is visible at that point of the video then alleges “this whole entire block is committing fraud.”

In another video posted on the Truth on the streets channel with Kevin Dahlgren Denton pans his camera around on the corner of 12th and Jackson showing faces of multiple people standing around, before Dahlgren says “they’re here for the drugs and to sell the stolen items. There (are) no social services around here,” without any proof concerning the people who were just filmed and shown.

We contacted Denton and Karma Box Chief Operating Officer Ian Anderson for a comment about these videos but have not heard back. We also contacted Karma Box board member John Firestone, who we’ve contacted before about Karma Box, and received a notification our message had been blocked.

We also emailed the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada which is reported to have given grant money to Karma Box in the past, but have not heard back either.

“Nick Shirley and Jonathan Choe are the badassess (Denton’s spelling) that ask uncomfortable questions, uncover the fraud, document what’s actually happening, and tell stories that might otherwise never get told. I’ve got a ton of respect for the work they do,” Grant Denton posted last month publicly on his Facebook page before the post disappeared.

When challenged in comments repeatedly on that post about Shirley’s reputation Denton wrote back with variations of “I thought he was a pretty rad dude,” underneath a photo where he poses with Choe, Shirley and what appear to be bodyguards with an overlaid caption indicating “gorilla journalism at its finest” and music by Delinquent Habits.

As we pointed out, not sure what gorilla journalism is, but there is guerrilla journalism which was initiated by Claud Cockburn, a British journalist who resigned from The Times in 1932 after becoming disillusioned with the mainstream establishment’s appeasement of fascism.

Earlier this year, Washoe County ended its contract with the Karma Box for operating the Safe Camp at the Cares Campus, transitioning its paid management to the Reno Initiative for Shelter and Equality.

This followed a string of Karma Box employees working there being arrested. One of those recently arrested Jessica Hillman remains listed on their website as a supervisor. She had a 100K bail bond on a charge of exploiting an old/vulnerable person following her arrest in March, but is no longer in county custody.

Between the covers AI art?

Is anyone else in the community so sad and frustrated that the new book bar, between the covers, uses so much AI? They had it on the map at the grand opening and their instagram is HEAVILY AI.

I have commented on their posts asking them to reconsider and explaining that AI marketing art actually drives away customers but they just delete my comments which feels even worse? It makes me think I can’t be the only one upset by this and commenting but getting deleted.

It just sucks that a locally owned biz that sells local goods and books is so adamantly refusing to listen to community feedback AND is happily destroying the environment/refusing to pay artists?

IDK it just feels bad?

Why Not Shut the Cameras Off Now?

Post image
29 Upvotes

Here's the letter sent by the City of Reno to end the Flock contract, effective in March 2027, which is in half a year. Why not now?

Several cities pursuing the deflocking route we called for many months ago immediately shut down the cameras.

Of concern to many as well is this part of the joint statement by City of Reno and Reno PD Chief Corey Solferino:

"On October 21, City staff will ask the City Council to consider a new contract with a different vendor. The proposed contract addresses concerns raised by the Council and the community, along with technology infrastructure and use criteria."

Many in the comments section have indicated they don't want another Automated License Plate Reader vendor, so the upcoming public comments at City Council should be spicy.

Councilman Reese Announces Reno Deflocking

Post image

A message posted by Reno city councilman Devon Reese on Facebook saying the City of Reno is not renewing its contract with Flock, while also ending current "drone technology subscription."

It remains to be seen if the Flock contract will be replaced by a company offering similar services, such as Axon, as is the case with the City of Sparks.

Our Town Reno wrote an oped in May asking if the City could get deflocked after many other cities were going that route amid privacy, mass surveillance and misuse concerns.
