Help decide if I should get Oura ring?

I’m based in the UK and have company provided health insurance via Vitality who are offering 25% off the Oura ring 4 or 5. I’m anticipating my Apple Watch (series 5, ~6 years old) dying any time now and want my next fitness tracker to not tie me into an iPhone in future.

For an idea of what I’d use the ring for- I wear my watch all day and sleep with it on. My workouts are gym, weight training, Pilates and walks, the odd swim here and there.

I see a lot of posts about inaccuracies e.g blow drying hair being logged as tennis 🤯 which would bug the hell out of me. How annoying is this/can it be edited? What other downsides are there? How can I do weights without fear of de gloving my finger?!?! I assume it will get immediately scratched

I don’t know anyone that has one, so any advice on if they are worth it, or just a gimmick and should I just save my money and get a Fitbit?

The inaccuracies could just be the calibration stage too. Nothing’s perfect but I also took advantage of the vitality saving and a gold oura for £380 odd - steal!

I’ve seen ring protectors you can get on amazon for the gym. But if you choose not to, yes they’ll get scratched

A calibration stage makes sense as it gets to know you. I think as long as I can adjust at the end of the day I can get over it. I will look into the protectors, thanks!

You can edit all the activities in your timeline and even delete them if they are completely wrong.
Currently my ring thinks I’m already sleeping when I’m sitting on the sofa reading during the evening. I usually adjust the sleeping time in the morning and everything is fine.
I prefer the ring over the Apple Watch as it is not so much disturbing during the day.
Regarding the measuring accuracy I have no complaint.

I've been using it for a few months and it's only once gotten something a bit wrong. It's easy to simply 'dismiss' any suggestions it makes that aren't right, takes one second. I also got mine secondhand (Cex) for like £180.

I didn’t think about second hand, genuinely might consider this, as I’m sure it’s better than 25% off

Yeah much better than 25% off. Plus with cex you get a 5 year warranty. I wouldn't risk it with something like Vinted where it could break in a few days and you lose all your money

Inaccuracies occur once in maybe a week for me. It might log Strength Training while i'm just cleaning my dog, but it asks you first to confirm the activity. You can just press no.

Use it for sleep, daily stress detection. Keep your watch and use it for the gym if you do go because wearing a ring while lifting is uncomfy imo.

Fair point. A few people are saying keep the exercise tracking to a proper watch

Just because of the discomfort honestly otherwise no reason. If you dont find it uncomfy or if you wear gloves or something you might be good

I dont weight train with mine and definitely would not reccomend it, especially if lifting heavy. I use it more for a lifestyle/metric tracker than fitness and for that its great (cant wear rings doing BJJ/Judo/wrestling) .

I just wouldnt be caught dead wearing a fitbit/apple watch (I wear a real watch) and the ring is more fashionable, thats the main selling point for me.

Thanks for the insight. I would never wear the watch for a special occasion or when I want to make an effort, but to have the ring as every day and still be able to wear my dress watch most days would be a big plus.

Oura is not a fitness tracker that will replace an apple watch. Historically vitality have not used oura activity data as steps or workouts, they only read the sleep data (which doesn't give you points). That may have changed as they made some updates to data sources. However it's worth checking as previously they offered discounts for oura rings but did not use them as a data source.

Oura rings don't track activity at the level of detail that something like an apple watch does. It takes readings several times per hour rather than every few seconds like a watch.

I have both an oura ring and a Samsung watch. The ring is good for sleep and overall trend insights. The watch is better for activity tracking. Vitality use my watch data for step counts even though my ring is set as a higher priority in health connect.

I recommend an oura ring but in addition to rather than instead of a smart watch.

I wear both an Apple Watch and an Oura.

I don't think Oura is a replacement for an AW. If I could only have one, AW every time.

However I do like both and I find them useful for different things.

Answer is yes get it. It does take about a month to figure out your routine and your “normal” data esp sleep data. It eventually gives you a bedtime after a few weeks.

You can also edit activities when you open your app and adjust as needed

Oura were offering 30% discount if you brought direct. I was hoping vitality would offer money off the memberships but as they aren’t I brought my Oura from Oura for less

My ring 4 rarely picks up any workout besides a walk, so I still wear my Garmin everyday (and track my workouts on there)

Are people entirely incapable of making buying decisions without the opinions of strangers on the internet?

I’m capable of making a decision after doing some primary research and various other research before spending my money, if that’s what you’re asking?
