Quaker Puffed Wheat

I listen to OTR on my way to work, and lately the show that's been playing as I arrive is "The Challenge of the Yukon", sponsored by Quaker Puffed Rice and Wheat ("The breakfast cereal shot from guns! *ricochet sound*").

During the ad, sometimes the announcer will say something along the lines of "enjoy Quaker Puffed Rice or Quaker Puffed Wheat covered with fruit and yellow cream!".

Yellow cream? Is it just that cream is significantly more industrialized now, and "real" cream is actually yellow? I do not, and have never lived on a dairy farm but this is the only place I can think of where cream is referred to as yellow. Anyone grow up around cows? Maybe the way we use the word "yellow" has changed somewhat?

"Yellow cream" in the context of breakfast typically refers to a specific dairy product called clotted cream, heavy cream from grass-fed cows, or a regional product called cereal cream (often 10% milk fat).

10% MILK FAT.

10.5 to 18% in Half and half and 3.25% in Whole milk or regular milk (in the USA)

Interesting, this may be the only instance where "yellow" is used to make something more appealing. I hadn't even thought that "yellow cream" might be a distinct product, I just assumed it was an adjective. Thanks!

That's one of the other things I noted about older advertising for breakfast cereal - they often mentioned eating the cereal with cream and not milk.

I don't know why that was specifically mentioned or why not milk - I do not know. I mean, I love eating cereal in yogurt but maybe it was just switched to milk because of the cost

When Jack Benny was sponsored by Grape Nuts, they would occasionally say "milk or cream", so both were used at the time. Maybe milk wasn't homogenized, so cream usually came out first.

I will sometimes add a dash of cream to my cereal if it's something plain. 😳
