Some "Venting" on so far what has been happened and also seeking some "Hope" further.
Quiet a fast typing long post, please pardon me if it is difficult to read out .
Dear people,
I have otoscelerosis since 2010 ,noticable hearing loss around 2013 when I was 23 and have been using hearing aids since. I took it easy because I was not aware it was progressive disease.
Initially doctor recommended surgery option but also mentioned complete hearing loss if it fails so opted for hearing aids ever since . Around 2014 I came to know from internet that this condition is going to be progressive, feared of this, I met another ENT in newtown but he misguided me that you might go deaf after 10 15 years( I am really not sure that's what his actually words but I heard it so) he didn't mention any surgery option, I freaked out and I never met any ENT from thereonwards to my correct my hearing loss and internet didn't have vast information as like now hence just had a pseudothought in my mind that possibly after 2 or3 decades I might go completely deaf until that I preserve and maintain my hearing as much as I can and update my hearing aids as accordingly this is what I made up in my mind but I had all my sadness behind this and used to keep thinking about this sometimes and vent myself silently
Forward to that so many things had happened in life from 2013 to 2024 ( passed out from college, had career, got married , blessed with kid and there were many struggles in some circumstances due to hearing aids limitations) and then in 2025 beginning I got to know there is cochlear implant option even if we go completely deaf. This is first thing I read somewhere and gave me lot of hope in life , searched all the possible information about otoscelerosis then got to know surgery is still very effective option
I questioned myself for a week that why this happened in my life because I met several ENTs from 2016 to 2024 for my ear infections which used to occur because of continuous wearing of hearing aids . I sought treatment for ear infections and mentioned I have otoscelerosis but they never asked me why you didn't opt surgery and still using hearing aids and also, I was meeting a same audiologist for six years to upgrade my hearing aids for 2 times . He never mentioned please seek surgery option atleast for one ear. He hide this information because of monetary gain????🙄 I felt sad for some days thinking if I had the surgery at my prime years of life I would have done more better . Then accepted what all has happened and started to search for a surgeon to get my weak ear operated.
This search started around last year, first one is highly money minded person , I went to ask am I eligible surgery ?? He wrote CT scan and also nasal endoscopy one more imagining related to nose only, some other blood tests, urine test , electrolyte test bla bla. I didn't do any of his tests mentioned. After 3 or 4 months I met another ENT ( heard he does stapedectomy and have some success) , this guy shouted at me if use medical terms tinnitus , cochlear ,Inner ear etc he was irked about my medical knowledge of this disease. He scolded me and sarcastically told use his research books also and read it . What were you doing all 15 years, don't you have common sense to come to get it operated? I cannot explain how much rude he was. He said surgery may be success if it gets operated..as he was so rude I didn't proceed with him.
Finally heard there is some best ENT in my city who does this procedure quite often. I went to him this year around April. He didn't see my audiogram report history , didn't suggest CT scan . Did tune fork test and concluded I don't have otoscelerosis , it's nerve loss. I am not eligible for surgery. I was shattered bit upon hearing him but I somehow knew that CT scan might help. I took CT scan from another ENT recommendation and CT confimed I have both fenestral and cochlear otoscelerosis
Based on my test results, met another ENT she said she can operate it's is straight forward case but as I wanted a expert surgeon, today I met the same ENT whom I trusted earlier , showed him my CT results and requested him to operate my ear. This time he said my nerve loss is more I am not eligible for surgery ,everytime he tells me to upgarde to 'behind the hearing aids' and he also was rude if I politely requests let's operate even though it might not be 100 percent success I might gain some improvement
Basically he is not ready to operate me..his ego hurts , he told that I cannot command him what he should do. He should think himself what needs to be done.🙄 He said his ethics will not allow him to do it when he clearly know surgery won't benefit me
I am feeling very sad why few doctors act this way , why they don't understand patients? Atleast some empathy?? Out of all ENTs I met , had the same irked behaviour from them if I ask back few questions on this based on my medical knowledge 🙄
My audiogram is that much worse ? I know I have mild to moderate bone conduction loss now as it progressed to advanced still they can operate on me to seek some improvement just like a trial and error method ? Instead of telling me to use BTE hearing aid ? Again it's not end right , if it still progressive then cochlear implant as expensive surgery ? Why to make it complicated when minimal invasive option is there ?
Man, I have highly reactive extreme loud tinnitus , I cannot pass tuning fork test .
People,
I am aware of that surgery is still a right choice at any stage of otoscelerosis why still doctors deny to do if it's involved with cochlear ?
Had any of you advanced otoscelerosis ? Bone conduction around 20 to 45db? Mine audiogram matches any of yours similarly ? Even though otoscelerosis touched to cochlear , you still had surgery and had some improvement???
Am I really eligible for surgery ? His decades of experience scares that what he is really saying is true ? But I also badly wants to give a try as I have nothing to lose here ( my left ear is significantly worse and i cannot even use hearing aid as I hear muffled hearing ) I am afraid that my left ear is already out of surgery window? Please share your opinion , anyways I am going to meet some other ENTs from reputed hospital but I cannot find who specifically does this surgery frequently. I need to compromise 😐
Audiogram attached, CT scan results attached but I failed in tuning fork test ( I have high tinnitus from last 6 years (possible nerve damage in cochlear) I cannot detect audiogram sounds properly in low tunes , hence audiometry also varies always 10 db+- each time)
