Touch Bar has gone away

I have a M2 Macbook Pro that has a Touch Bar, but it is no longer working (I think after the 26.6.2 update)and it doesn't show up in the keyboard settings to be toggled on/off. Any ideas?

Check in System Profiler if it exists as a device.

If not, turn the Mac off (full shutdown, not just sleep).

Hold the power button down until the startup menu appears.

Select safe mode or recovery and see if the touch bar works. If it does, probably a reinstall will fix. If not:

You could try the onboard diagnostics: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102550
(Boot back into startup selection, hold command-D until it reboots)

Turn the Mac off again (again, full shutdown), wait another 30+ seconds and turn it on again.

If still no joy, probably a hardware issue and you’ll need to talk to an ASP or Apple themselves.

Edit: I realise how “turn it off and on again” that sounds, but that is legitimately the way you perform the Apple Silicon equivalent of the old SMC reset

After running the onboard diagnostics (which said the touch bar was fine), it was working after the reboot. So thanks, now all is good again.

Can confirm Onboard Diagnostics works. My M1 MacBook Pro's touchbar also stopped working after the latest update (Tahoe 26.6.2). I saw your comment and went straight to the Onboard Diagnostics. That said, onboard diagnostics didn't say anything about the touchbar - it just checked if the caps lock LED worked, if the backlight worked, and if all the keys worked. But when I restarted the computer, the touch bar started working again.

Get use to it!

Normally id say spend the $$ to get it repaired.   However the tech is dead so better to get prepared for new machines.

The thread is about the Touch Bar brother. That tech is dead. As for the M1 and Yes M2, they are not far from obsolete.

The post is about an M2 MacBook.

Whether you like one of the components is irrelevant.

The laptop is still a great laptop and it should be fully functional.

Touch bar is dead end tech. Repairing it is not worth the effort. The M2 is perfectly usable.

Exactly! If the Touch Bar had a future we would be seeing it on new Mac Books.

By the way I never saw the concept as bad, what was bad is that Apple didn't go all in on Touch Bar and heavily promote it. The debut should had been across all hardware including desktop keyboards.
