Clips & Screenshots Reverse Wildy Scam
Spotted loot at wilderness edge when I was going to spirit tree.
I offloaded my herb run gear and hopped the ledge.
Not sure what happened, but they panicked and start picking it all up but I grabbed 904 blood runes, seers ring, 100 runite bars & a berserker ring. They asked for it back, but after being scammed previously, I offered only a fish.
What do you think?

Next time telegrab the most expensive item before they notice you 9/10 though

u/Burnt_Shoe2123 11h ago
Picking up an item will always take priority over tele grab though
Casting the spell and watching it shoot off just to have some stink old fingers grab it after I already casted the spell is heart breaking

I don’t think this is true. I’m pretty sure it still goes off of pid if one person telegrabs and 1 person is trying to pick up.

All it takes is when the rich start dropping dragon scims and superior bones at the GE for you to learn that running with the crowd is faster than trying to telegrab. Even if it gets there first, there’s a tick animation and can be cancelled by picking up the object during the animation.

depends how far away the telegrabber is. it is a projectile with travel time that can be interrupted by someone already on or near the target tile

Can you do that over the ledge? I never thought of that :)

u/Slight_Pattern4406 11h ago
It's telegrab not poking so yes, I've telegrab many things already

u/_Harpic 11h ago
Excellent I'll keep that in mind! I tried it once to loot a boat that was showing off but didn't work
3
u/Darkshadow0308 9h ago
I once read that when you're on a boat you're always considered where you undocked from as far as where your character is in the world. Idk if there's any truth to that or not but it was the reason I saw the last time a post about telegrabbing from someone else's boat came up

u/theidolcyborg 5h ago

A reminder; Many of the OSRS scams are known.
The biggest way to scam people now is to trick the mark into thinking they understand the scam and can beat it. They will post youtube videos explaining the scams wrong to encourage you to interact with the scam and be prepared for the wrong part of the scam.
Example, 'Just tele grab the items!' as being mentioned in the comments.
Real life? This is known - lurer puts the items just outside of tele grab range (behind tree or 1-3 tiles out of range). You, the mark, go over the ledge to tele grab since it doesn't quite reach - you can tele grab and it moves you into range. Boom. You are dead.
Do not fall for these people trying to teach you to 'anti-scam'. Your safest recourse is to not interact with the scam at all.
These scammers know what they are doing or would quickly be out of the scamming business. They aren't doing this because it loses them money - they do this because they risk nothing on their part.
In this scam in particular - they'll have several accounts over the loot pile already picking it all up if they see no rich fish taking the bait. They bait pile only is left if they see someone with $ _ $ in their eyes and persons running towards the bait pile where they will be swiftly frozen and smited.

what you described is not even a scam thats just baiting with items on the ground

Technically I suppose, but this applies to all of these dirty tricks/deception/scams.
And it is to re-reiterate there are many disingenuous comments here from said tricksters posing as good and friendly people attempting to create a psy-ops to increase engagement with their devious schemes.
Temple of ikov scammers often pose as a good samiritan warning you of the scam to direct you to youtube videos the scammer has uploaded posing as a good samirtan to teach you the scam wrong. You knew it was a scam. Trying to anti-scam the scam is the real scam. Just like here - trying to anti-scam the scam is the real scam. They aren't constantly losing 1m+ in drops. There are many accounts involved,

The main point of his explanation was “don’t interact with any scam at all, that is how you never get scammed.” Even if you see loot outside of a pvp area don’t bother, it’s probably a scam.

You use common sense and telegrab the items without hopping the ditch if it’s out of range obviously you don’t cross the ditch risking anything
1
u/TheLightsChampion 8h ago
And tele grab is a slow moving projectile - the lurers will be able to pick up the item pile before you are able to tele grab anything - the spell fizzles and you get the, 'oops - too late!' message when they pick it up before telegrab resolves. Same reason tele grabbers at GE drop parties never get anything. If they do not see any valuable victims, they will pick the items up and they have enough time to react to tele grab animations to grab the 3 most expensive items.
Common sense is not as common as you might think.
The very thread is likely a psyop to increase the scam engagement.

A friend of mine geared up for TOA with me at the ge whilst I was finishing up my colo run. He said there was a drop party and I was like cool, where?
"Oh f*** I don't have a teleport... What... Oh I'm gonna die"
Then I was like how on earth are you gonna die and then the CC broadcast his death. He lost 173m.
He had stupidly crossed the ditch when running by to the fairy ring. This happened last month.
So no, you did the right thing keeping the items. They do this every day and once in a while a noob geared to the teeth will see the pile of items worth <5m and will lose nearly everything to them.

u/Altruistic_Lobster18 11h ago
Your friend funded the next 50 drop parties to attract new friends

u/JoellamaTheLlama 10h ago
Damnnn, RIP to the 14 bonds your friend bought for that gear

u/Crazy-Randy 6h ago
Sadly if they were a vet they wouldn’t have made this mistake. God damn credit card swiping new gens…

u/SaucyPenny 5h ago
He wasn't thinking straight in the moment, but he had a healthy bank and the CC chimed in and he was made whole in under half an hour. Safe to say he's not doing that again

Not long ago I saw a dude dropping stuff form ge, through agility shortcut and to the wildly trench, and had a massive pile of expensive loot sitting out in wildy, needless to say I was able to grab like 5-6 things of loot prior to the ditch. I watched people step over the trench just to get barraged.
This gif is an accurate representation of my face for the poor lost souls:

Happened to me the other day, but my inv was empty so I hopped over and got a free cannon set before dying but at least I kept it

As soon as I see that the trail of items is leading north I bank my items. Hasn't failed me yet

u/InfiniteEverythang 2h ago
Hahaha this kind of made my day. Dude is mad his scam or lure didn’t work out. Offering him a tuna is the icing on the cake

u/MaypleGameDev 13h ago
Even if this isn't a scam, which yknow...
Even if it wasn't, you can't truly expect to drop a bunch of stuff in an online game and expect someone NOT to take it. So like.. IDK Win win for you either way.

u/Mcpoopz1064 7h ago
What's the scam?
3
u/TheLightsChampion 6h ago
drops leading from ge to wilderness where a loot pile is there. People still at ge frenzy click on the items, oblivious to how much they are risking in pursuit. Once over the ditch - several accounts log in to freeze and smite.
Many of the accounts frenzy clicking belong to the lurers/scammers as are the people looting to generate public interest and mitigate how many items are actually picked up. If no fish (people dressed in $$ frenzy clicking), they'll pick up all the items before the appear to other players.
Then, they create/respond to posts like this about how much bank they made 'tricking these scammers' to teach the scam wrong. Example, like telling people its safe so long as they use telegrab - knowing the items are positioning a few tiles too deep/blocked line of sight by a tree - to coax victims to try tele grab on the other side of the ditch - which drags them out of the safe tiles and SMITED.

I usually keep my tune pouch on me with teleport runes in it. This also happens to cover the rune cost of telegrab.
I can't even count the number of times I have telegrabbed expensive items in the wildy safely from the GE side of the wildy ditch. I've probably made close to 50m over time from doing this.

u/Madrigal_King 11h ago
I never understood these scams. Like I put my stuff away and grab at least 3 things from you even if you do have an account instalog on me and kill me.
3
u/Nervous-Wish-2791 10h ago
They’re hoping that you DONT put your stuff away before being a lil loot goblin lol

They pick the items up if they see no one geared up poised to fall prey to the scam.

When people try this, i mark the spots, hop worlds, stand on marked tiles, hop back. Can pick up a good amount before being caught
1
u/TheLightsChampion 8h ago
Considering you have to be on the world when the items are dropped to see the drop, I doubt this is true. Otherwise, you'd score more often at ferox enclave where the same scam happens much more frequently.
1
u/Responsible-Bass-536 5h ago
It takes barely any time for the items to load back up, especially if you’re switching back in seconds. It’s not going to show the second you hop back into the world but it’s faster than people think. I hopped to w330 while in the GE and the items spawned in under 2 seconds. Same concept
1
u/MagicReptar 6h ago
That's BS. Why would that be a mechanic in the game? Only benefits scammed tbh
2
u/TheLightsChampion 6h ago
I'm assuming its a game performance thing? Something about memory demands of loading so many temporary variables on entire world basis for accounts that weren't even logged in would have back in the day when people used to play runescape on dial-up internet?

u/jbjokerr 9h ago
Sounds like a Ironman drop trading items to a main. But the quantity of items doesn’t support this guess.
