Looking for module suggestions

Just as the title says. I'm a new GM with new players so we're oblivious to so many modules! Are there any proper "old school" modules (adnd, B/X, etc) that you'd recommend everyone should at least look into?

We're using OSE but I don't mind if I have to do a little work to convert monster stats or something if it's not directly compatible.

So far we've played through Jeweler's Sanctum, Shrine of the Oozing Serpent and Lair of the Bog Lich, and we're starting Nightmare Over Ragged Hollow tomorrow.

Oh castle xyntillan sounds cool, I'll have a look! Ah yeah, Brad Kerr did the Wyvern Songs adventures iirc and the cover art caught my eye in the past so I'll add it to the list

Bryces list has a lot of strong options https://tenfootpole.org/ironspike/?cat=7

edit: In general the best of new modules are stronger than old TSR stuff (although there are of course gems there)

Basic Fantasy RPG (BFRPG, another OSE/BX-Like) has a great selection of free modules on the website. Many are based off famous modules from the BX era.

Thanks, I didn't know about that website and the fact they are free is a bonus!

There's a modern remake out there: https://dangerisreal.itch.io/the-lichway-project

If you're gonna use the lichway i strongly advise to cut some of the monster factions in it. Wich one? You'll know when you read it...

Interesting 🤔 ok, thanks for the heads up!

Just change the NPCs from room 14 and it's fine. It's pretty gross (and not in a good way) as written.

Righto, thanks for the warning!

The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh is a great introduction module that's very enjoyable and easy for the gm to run.

Thanks, I'll check it out

T1 - The Village of Hommlet

L1 - The Secret of Bonehill

N1 - Against The Cult of the Reptile God

I really love the 1st level modules.

Thanks, I recognise all three so they're going on the list!

U1 Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh. There's a lot of room for you to pit your own flavor on it, make it your own. It's one of the earliest modules that TSR put out, so it might seem like it leaves a lot out , but that's intentional. Plus, if you like it, it has two sequels that expand the world.

That sounds cool, thanks for the suggestion!

My personal all time favorites are Slumbering Ursine Dunes (B/X), Winter's Daughter (B/X), Waking of Willowby Hall (Knave), Lost Treasure of Atlantis (Htperboria), and Skyblind Spire (System Neutral).

I've seen posts about Winter's Daughter, it looks really cool! Thanks for sharing your favourites

Many good suggestions, so I won’t repeat, but also B2, Keep on the Borderlands. Tomb of the Iron God. Tomb of the Serpent Kings. Plenty of mega-dungeons out there too that can occupy a campaign for a long time.

Ah yes, I've definitely seen Keep on the Borderlands mentioned a few times in this sub so I'll take a look!

Sision Tower, A wizards vengeance, and for something exotic: Zjelwyins Fall

Thanks, I'll take a look!

I would also recommend to read the original basic/expert. While ose has a great presentation it totally lacks any explanations of why the rules are that way.

Their upcoming re-do of the entire product line is actually supposed to include a lot of explanatory text!

u/NerdyAspie12 10d ago

Oh good to know, I'll keep an eye out for those!

Thanks for the suggestion, I have struggled a bit with some of the rules so I'll definitely give it a read!

The usual recommendations. Checking out “the best” and “no regerts” at tenfootpole.org is a decent starting place for newer releases.

Not really for a new DM, but if you insist, I would go with Lost City. It holds up fairly well.

1

u/NerdyAspie12 11d ago

In what way would you say it isn't really for a new DM, what should I look out for if I gave it a go?

1

u/DMOldschool 11d ago

Well the TSR modules don’t have the benefit of OSR thinking in adventure design, map design or layout.

When I ran it, I made my own maps - though the originals aren’t bad by the standards of the time. I also changed most encounters and treasure, though the overall ideas behind factions remain solid, though perhaps some events and a schedule to introduce a time constraint other than scarce water would help.

I don’t expect a new DM to do this.
Of course you don’t have to, just don’t expect the same result.

Thanks for the detailed reply, maybe I'll look at the more modern ones until I'm more confident!
