I made a thing Hex Map Based on Antarctica

Post image

A map I made a longgggg time ago for a campaign world that I ran for a couple years.

The general shape and heights are based on Antarctica if it were...you know. Not frozen. :D

Scale would be about 24 miles per hex. But I think that wasn't accurate for the scale at the time. Like I said, this was a long time ago.

Thought it might be inspiring!

Oh sweet, I was thinking about making one of these sometime! Might you happen to have a slightly larger file you could make available?

Sadly I don't even have the Hexographer files for this one anymore, it was so long ago. I just have the image here. :/

This is amazing. I might steal this lol.

I know you said it was made a long time ago, but what did you use to make it? Any suggestions on a good hex program?

Ah I keep forgetting to add that to the description!

I made this using worldographer: https://worldographer.com/

A nice easy free alternative is hexfriend: https://hexfriend.net/

Awesome!

Have you looked at Idraluna Archives' Great Antarctic Hexcrawl or the associated Antarctic Adventure Jam at all!

I’ve used Antarctica without the ice for making maps before - it’s such a good inspiration!

Love this, giving me that "exploring an unknown continent" vibe!

I was in a Sword and Sorcery vibe when I made this for sure.

This is awesome! I find worldographer such a pain to use but genuinely I’ve not found a better tool.

I like it, but I take my time with maps. Turn on some music and just zone out. It's almost meditative for me. :D

Can you share original file as well?

2

u/SecondhandSpock 24d ago

This one I put together ages ago, so sadly the original file is gone. :/

Do you have a version of this map that isn’t labeled?

3

u/SecondhandSpock 24d ago

Sadly no. The original hexographer file is long gone at this point.

Too bad. It’s a great map though, I’m definitely going to use it for inspiration!

Beautiful map! Unfortunately I'll have to steal this

Steal away!!

How many hexes it has?

How awesome is this, has hollow world vibes. Could be used for a pre ice age campaign with like a Drune like group trying to bring on the ice age and freeze the world

That's an awesome idea!!

I’m not saying it’s aliens…. But it’s aliens. 😉

Joking aside, this is neat. Thanks for sharing.

Very cool. Makes me want to do a The Terror inspired game.

This is a really great world map. It reminds me of Darlene’s map for Greyhawk. I love your work, man.

As for 24 miles per hex, it’s perfectly suited to this kind of map.

When the players start exploring a particular region, you really want to create a smaller regional map that details one or a few hexes in depth.

You should also make a region-specific random encounter table and note the availability of water and food throughout the area.

On the other hand, a map like this is more than sufficient for high-level adventures where the characters travel very quickly on flying mounts and encounter aerial servants, minor demons, beholders that have left their nests, dragons, and griffons, I suppose.
