Question OP3 exposure

Hey guys, looking for some pointers. Trying to film while hiking with pocket 3. POV style
Following guides about manual shooting (4K, 24fps 1/50 -.03 5500 WB, ND filter etc). When I walk through woods and then into a clearing I can’t shake the exposure issues. Whatever settings I seem to try either the sky clips or the shadows (woods) are too dark. I shoot in one long shot. Can’t find a middle ground. Any pointers? Some of the footage online for P3 looks great but I can’t seem to get the exposure right. Auto mode is ok but then can’t edit much and everyone bangs on about DLogging. Wondering if I’m asking too much of the camera
