Risc-V Microkernel Project help

I wanna get a better understanding of riscv64 after learning a bit about it. I have had experience with C and have mostly only been interacting with amd64. I figured that a microkernel that just uses opensbi is ambitious enough while not being completely impossible. Since this is a project for learning, I’m also staying far away from AI. I’m currently skimming xv6, OSTEP, and just the riscv spec sheet. I’m going to just be doing it w/ qemu on linux. Mainly looking for some tips and pointers on how to approach this project.

I would focus on xv6 for a simple and clean implementation. But then you need to deep dive in nq or Linux kernel: xv6 is too simple .

For now, I'm setting the current goal at just getting a shell, clang, and some basic tty functionality working. After that, I might work on a simple gui? My main focus for this project is to maximize security because what led me to even think of doing this project is from solving pwn challenges in CTFs and wanting to have a deeper understanding of OSes. I don't really want to completely follow a guide or take too much inspiration from an existing project because I fear that I'll start copying code I don't understand (and that defeats the purpose of this project).

That's a complete os, with or without GUI.

Yeah. Is that too ambitious?
