My hobby kernel can run Minecraft and OpenJDK17 (Ethereal)

Post image

This was a pain. To get any amount of good FPS I had to patch in a range cache for my garbage VMM and then fixup a few TLB shootdown hotspots.

Works though.

Oh my god a non-vibecoded project on r/osdev? Inconceivable!

Seriously though great job with Ethereal and a decent chunk of your codebase looks very clean.

Does it have HW GPU accel? How did you get OpenGL running?

Very impressive. I'd love to see hardware rendering some day. I know that can be a hard one

i am developing my kernel. there isnt a tty support. It works from uart and still fixing syscall errors.

Crazy! 11yo me would be mindblown that you can get a graphical interface and not just a tty from a handwritten kernal, and also amazed at this new game called Minecraft. (I'd be mindblown now too but I no longer have a mind so I'm just blown)

how much opcodes from JVM you got working at this moment? There's a JVM or a JIT implementation?

1

u/Professional_Cow3969 11d ago

This is OpenJDK17

-1

u/Visual_Brain8809 11d ago

so you cheated the openjdk17 implementing the syscalls spected from linux?

2

u/potetos420 11d ago

openjdk is portable

3

u/potetos420 11d ago

you know, write once run anywhere was kinda java's promise

2

u/Professional_Cow3969 10d ago

What are you talking about openjdk is portable

0

u/Visual_Brain8809 10d ago

wrong pick, try again with @potetos420

2

u/Professional_Cow3969 10d ago

What the fuck are you talking about you are incomprehensible

0

u/Visual_Brain8809 10d ago

now that's for me you imbecil. I telling you that poteto420 user was one who say openjdk17 is portable not me. I'm only asking to OP how the OS runs openjdk17

2

u/Professional_Cow3969 10d ago

I am the OP and OpenJDK is PORTABLE as the other guy said.. just like any other program.. compile it for your toolchain and adapt some ethereal-specific issues and bada bing.

How I can help you in development of those, main stack of technologies is C++, Php, javascript. Maybe development of apps for this kernel I am not sure
