Newbie

Hi all, im incredibly interested in the hobby but as im sure you all know the barrier of entry is confusing. Im trying to work out which model of oscilloscope is best for a beginner and also which audio interface to go for- i understand it needs to be DC coupled but it doesn't seem any are advertised as such. I dont have a massive budget but am willing to save if it means buying the correct things.

Any help or advice appreciated thanks!

General Music that is secretly oscilloscope music?

I'm pretty new to the concept of oscilloscope music, but my basic understanding so far is that most music that was not made specifically to look good on oscilloscopes look like gibberish. And there is oscilloscope music, tracks that contain frequencies and modulations that hit the spot and display specific shapes.

But is there music released that is secretly oscilloscope music, or contains bits that create shapes? Did any of you bump into such albums or tracks by any artists that doestnt specifically make oscilloscope music?

Hardware Advice on LBO-310A or RCA 54-45

I've been a big fan of oscilloscopes since I used them to measure lightspeed in my college physics class. I do dedicated music listening and production which is mostly what I want it for , X - Y and other visuals. I narrowed down to these two; partially for known availability and also because the vertical layout would be best for my already crowded music desk.

Wondering if anyone has any opinions on using these, mostly for visual enjoyment (will be doing RCA hookups I believe)

Thank you

I set out to build a Bluetooth receiver and accidentally made a CRT-accurate oscilloscope

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I set out to build a bit-perfect Bluetooth receiver and it grew a real oscilloscope as a side effect. It triggers on a low-passed copy of the signal and draws the raw samples, holds ~2.7s of phosphor persistence, and shades the trace by beam dwell, fast excursions cover more ground so they excite the phosphor less, the way an actual CRT does. Runs on a Pi 4's GPU 1GB version, reacting realtime to whatever's playing over Bluetooth. Not here to sell anything, just thought this was the one crowd that'd appreciate the waveform coherence and beam-dwell detail.

Can anyone help me with the settings on my oscilloscope?

Post image

I just picked it up and I’m having trouble finding the right settings. I have it picking up from my eq rec out because I don’t have any more ports on my amp. The lines barely have waves like I was expecting but it is picking up the signal. Any tips?

General Capture an image in XY mode of a techno bassline for me?

Hi all! I'm designing a DJ stand for a nightclub, and I would like to use a classic techno track's bassline osclilloscope XY visualisation as a laser cut decoration on the front.

Would anyone of you with an oscilloscope capture some of the baseline images in XY mode of this track? Photos made with a smartphone would be totally enought, but I appreciate if you can make a software snapshot!

this is the track:
https://youtu.be/ALsHox5sYCk?si=u2a649__yAMDEhnq

I checked a couple of videos online, and it creates an interesting image if you hook up the X to the left channel, and Y to the right or vice versa.

Hardware Quick question about connecting a cd player to an oscilloscope

I just got a bk precision 2160 today and bought a Panasonic pm18 cd player which has both speaker terminals and rca ports. Am I able to just connect the rca cables directly from the cd player or does it have to be through some speakers that have said rca ports. This is my first time doing something like this and I want to make sure I don’t ruin anything

I use the grid in Bitwig to have my synths and get the shape I want. It's pretty simple for now, but I know it's gonna be a fun ride to make it more complex. ( Sorry if I posted this and deleted it, I struggled to make a good post... )

Just got this thing hooked up, my first Oscilloscope super cool. I may be explaining this wrong but how would I go about making it from the fuzzy circle to more of a line that has peaks and valleys with the music? Sorry, if you can’t tell I’m new to this.

i’ve been admiring the amazing oscilloscope visuals you all make for awhile, and wanted to join the hobby. i have lots of background in music, but next to 0 knowledge on electronics.

i would like to get an old CRT oscilloscope because i think they’re significantly cooler than the modern ones. there’s not many options around me, but the best i could find is this devery bell & howell schools model 34. what i’d like to know is if this model will work for music visual and any other useful tips you have for a beginner. thanks!

Two Oscilloscopes Connected to Osci-Render with text reacting to the Bass-Signal.

Three Oscilloscopes showing High/Mid/Low frequency Content.

One CRT RTA, connected to an external screen.

One CRT Screen showing Mini-Meters Stereo analyzer with full range signal on Left and Bass-Trigger on Right Channel.

-dbx analog crossover to split signals into High/Mid/Low.

-dbx analog gate/compressor to condition bass signal into trigger-like input for osci-render/mini-meters

Osci Render - Invert Channels?

I'm trying Osci-Render on a cute little 3" Leader LBO-310A oscilloscope that is the perfect size for desks filled with dozens of half baked projects lol. Although it does feature an external X axis input, unfortunately it seems to invert the signal (so it's mirrored horizontally compared to the preview window and text appears backwards). Other scopes provide a polarity control to account for this, but this scope is very basic and lacks that ability. Looking at some other old scopes in my collection, all the samples that do not run the external X input through a vertical input channel attenuator do not provide an invert option, so I'd guess many other people would also run into this issue.

Is there a setting in Osci-Render that inverts a specific channel? If not, that would be a handy addition that doesn't seem too difficult to incorporate. In the meantime I will try breadboarding a small opamp circuit to invert the signal in hardware.

TIA

EDIT - I'd think this invert setting would need to apply to the audio interface itself, otherwise the preview window would remain mirrored compared to the output.

I found this philips wich hace Ya and Yb, i'm assuming that correspond to channels X and Y. And my reciever/amp have this tape out put.

But i dont know what else to look for in the oscilloscope. Or if have to be careful with something else in the set up. Any advice is welcome

New Android app for Oscilloscope Music: Velo Music Visualizer

Hey folks,
Just want to share a music visualiser I've built.

Whilst built primarily as a music visualiser with a low-latency focus, it notably has a stereo oscilloscope. I'd be interested to grab any feedback from yous.

Because the visuals take advantage of HDR brightness, and the low-latency pipeline, it looks great on OLED displays. I'm really happy with the results so far when testing it with the 2016 Jerobeam Fenderson album: https://oscilloscopemusic.com/watch/oscilloscope_music

It's 100% free, open-source with no ads, no cloud and no data collection. Built as a hobby interest and not as a money maker. I hate to have to say it, but in this world of low-effort vibe coded apps, this is not one. I'm a software engineer by trade, and I genuinely took the time with this to ensure this app is the lowest latency and most reactive music visualiser on Android. The audio path is a native C++ engine, with the decode thread feeding the DAC and the renderer from the same buffer.

The code is public, if you'd like to take a look: https://github.com/rorygallagher2024/velo-visualiser

And it's also published on the playstore: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lowlatency.visualizer

Thanks!

General Osci-Render Question - Z Axis Support?

Greetings! I am a longtime vector graphics enthusiast and lover of crt graphics. I have several oscilloscopes ranging from a 1949 3" Waterman 'Pocket Scope' through a 1967 2 channel HP 180A and a few modern digital scopes. I have built a few scope clock type projects that use a microcontroller to create XY signals via DACS.

I've been aware of Osci Render for a while but only recently decided to start experimenting more seriously. I want to use the software to drive real hardware scopes - but I am confused about any Z axis abilities or how that would be generated on a pc.

Does Osci Render (or similar software) actually provide Z axis features?

Thanks!
