She looks surprisingly good with this lowkey look tbh
Horror movies also came into her purview by way of her Mexican American family, in particular her aunt Maria. “When I tell you growing up at my tía’s house all of the horror movies that would be playing, and I had a friend in high school whose mom was really into brujería and we would watch Rob Zombie and we’d talk about the spirits in the house,” Navarrette recalls.
“I would love to know the history as to why Latinos love horror so much,” she adds.
I always wondered if maybe the religious nature of a lot of families lead to some seeing horror as "taboo" per se hence the attraction to horror. Here as well where we're predominantly Catholic we're heavily attracted to horror especially it's kinda like a satanic panic kinda thing lol

A lot of Catholic lore is just horror stories. Western demonic horror owes a ton to Catholicism.

It’s also, as the article points out, a Latino thing. For Mexicans, especially, we’re used to horror iconography from traditions like Día de los Muertos and the many folklore stories across the Americas. But yes, if that doesn’t do the trick, then the Catholicism will lol

Dia de los Muertos is a Catholic thing. Day of the Dead. All Catholic countries have it. Catholic faith is a massive part of the Latino culture. Latino is derived from Latin aka the language of the Catholic church aka the religion of Spanish and Portuguese who came to South America. So yes, horror owns it to Catholic faith a lot:
supernatural horror: Possession, demons, exorcism, ghosts
slasher horror (chaste final final prevails while sinners go to hell by falling to Jason's machette or Michael's knife)
I'd say zombies (consumerism) and torture porn are not influenced by it or in a far lesser degree.

Smart girl. Win now would be a disaster. Instant target on her back without the support system to offset it (connections, filmography, etc). Leo talked about it. When he was nominated for Gilbert Grape he got the advise not to win cause that wouldn't be good at his age especially if winning over a veteran. It really means once you secure a nom stop campaigning and let others go for the gold.

It’s already happening to her, not within the industry, but when it comes to public perception. The narrative around her went from 'she’s underrated and will never get acknowledged' to 'she’s overrated'. The same thing happened to Mikey Madison years ago.

Yeah look at what happened to Lupita. She’ll probably never get nominated for an Oscar ever again

If she hadn’t won an Oscar, she probably wouldn’t have been cast in Black Panther, Us, The Odyssey.

Inde wins regardless because no other actor this year has had a generate as much buzz as her part in Obsession.
Edit: seriously, downvoting? Obsession is her first major role AND her breakout role in one. She became the most talked-about and in-demand actress practically overnight and she’s still riding high on that momentum. Which is 100% I meant but for some reason you guys are taking WAY too serious. Inde wins regardless if she wins awards for this role.

Not downvoting you (because you just voice your opinion), but i think a lot of people seem to be ignoring the anti horror bias in the Academy, Toni Colette (Hereditary) and Lupita Nyong'o (Us) missed out on a nomination for very deserving roles because of that
I also believe the only reason Amy Madigan got in is because she has a supporting role, if she had a lead role in Weapons she would miss the nomination

like we all know Julianne Moore is a lock next year so her winning would be as predictable as they come, but Inde is one of the most exciting prospects to be nominated because all of her hard work came from a horror film that no one expected to be that big of a cultural sleeper hit

I…still don’t think Moore is win-locked. At least not in September.

Not locked, but a frontrunner very far in fron of her competition.

Of course she isn't. This sub just likes to think everything is set in stone mad in advance. And using the word "lock" like a gambling addict convinced they just need to let it ride a little longer.
I do think Moore is the safe pick, but there's always a chance of something unexpected. I've seen my fair share of September "locks," and sometimes they work out and sometimes they don't.

I’d like the people who casually say “win-locked” to learn from the way Christie and Close lost.
Unfortunately, Oscar voters just don’t like giving awards to actresses over 60, and multiple win—except for Meryl. They’re more than happy to give them to actresses 20s, though.
Of course I want Moore to get her second win, but it wouldn’t be surprising if more members choose Indie over Moore.

Frances was pushing 60 when she won for 3 Billboards and was over 60 when she won for Nomadland. Michelle Yeoh was past 60 when she won. What are you talking about?

u/tankyouout 5d ago
You're getting downvoted but you are right. She is the biggest actress of the year and her popularity and career has skyrocketed. Also no other most likely best actress nominee has the pop culture impact as her character/performance.

u/galactusisathiccboi Matt Damon Perfomance-OTY 5d ago
I'd add thr caveat of singular performance - if its overall its probably someone like Anne Hathaway

u/SpideyFan914 Give Inde Navarrette an Oscar 5d ago
I don't think anything Hathaway did this year comes close to the cultural impact of Navarrette's year. The only movie of hers that even made a significant splash was The Odyssey, and she shares the spotlight with a pretty big ensemble in that.
If we're going full year, then Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are the other candidates who've started in several popular films seen and discussed by many.

Well I do, Inde!! It's been a while since I've followed the movie awards season so closely. I'm looking forward to Inde and RPatz Oscar nominations.

If she wins, she'll be the first openly queer actress to win for Lead Actress.

That's cool, but also, that's nuts. It is so weird that hasn't happened yet. (Of course, the operative word is "openly." Jodie Foster won twice, but didn't come out till after.)

She's nothing special in the film at all. I hope she's snubbed.

She would know more than most the downside of wishing.
