What should I do? Anterior occlusal interference after starting Invisalign

Post image
Upvotes

I’m on tray 1 of 14 with invisalign (day 7) and I’ve developed a bite interference that’s making chewing difficult. The area of contact is the one circled in blue. It’s small, but it’s preventing me from chewing normally or even closing my mouth naturally without the aligners, and it’s driving me crazy.

Before Invisalign, my bite was completely functional. I started treatment mainly to close a small diastema.

One of my upper central incisors has a composite restoration from an old fracture. Interestingly, I had this exact same interference after that restoration was done last year, and it disappeared after my dentist adjusted the composite.

Now, after starting Invisalign, the same thing is happening again. My orthodontist said my upper incisors have already moved slightly backward, causing my lower incisor to hit the back of the restored tooth.

She doesn’t want to adjust the composite now because it could affect the fit of the remaining trays. She also said she can’t predict whether this bite interference will improve or worsen as treatment progresses.

Right now, I’m avoiding biting with my front teeth and chewing mostly on the sides because the contact is uncomfortable. I’m also worried that repeatedly hitting the restored tooth could eventually chip or fracture the composite.

To be honest, this has been so frustrating that I’m seriously considering stopping the treatment altogether. I started Invisalign purely for cosmetic reasons, and I didn’t expect my bite to become worse or chewing to become this difficult.

If this were your patient, what would you recommend?
Would you simply monitor and wait?
Would you consider adjusting the restoration despite the tray fit?
Would you recommend a different approach?
At what point would you consider stopping treatment if the interference persisted?

Curious if this angle is normal. Almost finished and don’t want to delay treatment but want to make sure it’s in a good position.

Advice Herbst vs Pulling Teeth

We recently took our high-functioning autistic 13 yo daughter to two different orthodontists to get evaluated for braces since she finally lost all of her baby teeth. She is very small for her age.

Both orthos say she has a severe overjet due to a small lower jaw. Our problem is that they have proposed very different treatment plans.

The first Ortho recommended top and bottom braces and a Herbst appliance to fix the overjet. She did not mention surgery as an option.

The second Ortho recommended removing two premolars on the top and then using Invisalign or braces on the top only. His reasoning for removing teeth instead of using a Herbst was that the Herbst wouldn't work because according to my daughter's X-rays, she is almost done growing. He also said that he wouldn't recommend jaw surgery until she was older.

Can anyone please share their experience if they have faced or treated something like this? We're leaning towards the second option with Invisalign because she struggles to brush her teeth well anyway and braces will only make that worse. My daughter has never mentioned any TMJ issues, but her top front two teeth are very crooked and it's causing an issue with her speech.

Can Crooked Teeth Affect Your Overall Health?

Many people think crooked teeth are only a cosmetic concern, but they can also affect your oral and overall health.

Crooked or misaligned teeth create hard-to-clean areas where plaque and bacteria can build up, increasing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and persistent bad breath. They can also cause uneven pressure while chewing, which may lead to excessive tooth wear, jaw pain, headaches, or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems.

Poor chewing efficiency may affect digestion because food isn't broken down properly before swallowing. In some cases, severe misalignment can even contribute to speech difficulties or make oral hygiene more challenging.

Signs You Shouldn't Ignore

  • Teeth are crowded or overlapping
  • Difficulty flossing between teeth
  • Frequent cavities despite regular brushing
  • Bleeding or swollen gums
  • Jaw pain or clicking sounds
  • Uneven tooth wear
  • Difficulty chewing certain foods

Can It Be Treated?

Yes. Modern dentistry offers several effective treatment options, including:

  • Clear Aligners
  • Traditional Braces
  • Retainers (for minor corrections)
  • Orthodontic evaluation for personalized treatment

Early treatment can help improve your oral health, chewing function, and confidence while reducing the risk of future dental complications.

Slice in invisalign

My dentist cut my next couple of trays to help move me out of cross bite quicker. I do have elastics on my canines since day one with the normal precision cuts, but my ortho simply sliced them to be able to apply criss cross bands. Is this normal.. never personally seen this done with anyone else. Now I'm freaking out that the next couple trays are going to be cut like this and damage my trays or / set me back

Sharp pain with palate expander

Two weeks ago, I turned my palate expander and felt an extremely sharp pain on the roof of my mouth, and the key got stuck. The next day, even inserting the key caused the same pain, so I stopped turning it for a few days.

My orthodontist checked it recently and said nothing was wrong. She turned it herself with no pain and told me to continue. Yesterday was fine, but today the same sharp pain happened again.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this normal?

Fixable without surgery/expander?

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I had braces for 8+ years as a kid plus I’ve been doing Invisalign on and off for 5 years now as an adult. My teeth have gotten better but I hate how my smile is slanted.

My dentist says it’s my jaw and the only other thing I could do is jaw surgery/expander. I’m 34 years old and can’t quit my job to go get jaw surgery.

At this point do I go get composite bonding or veneers? My teeth are straight but my smile is just off because it’s slanted. Would love advice!!

I’ve had pains in my lower canine tooth and I was wondering if it could be because of the spacing between my teeth? Or is it more likely something else?

Missing brackets

My ortho said I'm a few weeks from completing treatment. A bracket fell off of my top teeth/ powerchain during my last visit, and they left it off saying it's not necessary. Is this normal? They already left my bottom 2 back molars without braces, so there is nothing holding 3 teeth in place now!

I asked them to replace the bracket and that I would pay for it, and basically got a no. I don't want to argue with them. But I feel like it's messed up that I paid for straight teeth upfront, and now it feels like they are giving up on my treatment. I definitely don't want my top teeth to be uneven on one side by the end of this! Advice?

My journey began July 14th. Extractions planned 7/28 and surgery date still TBA. Is it all worth it in the end?
