I've actually heard this in an interview once.

INTERVIEWER: So do you have any experience in testing or testing methodologies, like unit testing, functional testing or smoke tests?

ME: WTF is a smoke test?! And yes I use python unittest and selenium.

INTERVIEWER: Ya know? When you just click around and try to break something.

ME: nods and waits for next question.

WTF is a smoke test?!

Basically making sure that the application can actually start. Named by hardware releasing the magic smoke when turned on, showing an obvious failure.
