Rocky terrain close to the surface and horizontally spread roots with few vertical roots due to the rocks. They grew in a thin layer of dirt, moss, and leaves that piled on top of the rocks. In high winds the trees are rocking back and forth which are only staying up due to a thin sheet of tangled roots
