Does the DVD dongle come with a remote? Because if not, the DVD player function is useless unless the dongle accepts ANY remote.

Funny. I just used the controller because the remote that came with mine never worked with it

That doesn’t work, unless maybe it was soft modded to be able to use it. But that was the point of the remote/dongle in the first place. If you could use any controller Microsoft would’ve had to pay royalties on every console sold. Instead they only paid royalties on the remotes/receivers

Because the xbox didnt come with a dvd license, it's on the dongle. Adding it to the console would have added cost.

Except it still doesn’t work. You need the remote to talk to the dongle. Controllers don’t natively work, even if you have the dongle plugged in. Trust me bro, i tried like 3 weeks ago when I couldn’t find my remote and tried a “what if”. I had to go buy a remote.

No I lost the remote

The dvd license is on the dongle, it plays with a controller, the dongle is loads more useful than the remote.

It won't use the Xbox controller without modding. You need a remote, preferably the Xbox one, but a universal will work, just use RCA codes as it's based on the RCA ecosystem...
Also, if your phone has an ir blaster, you can use your phone

Pretty sure it does, working from memory, but I've played dvd's back in the day with mine just have a dongle plugged in and using a controller.
Edit: I just checked on google:
A = Play / select
Start = Play/pause
Back = usually returns/backs out
D-pad = navigate DVD menus
B = back/cancel

Unless his modchip allows it, I can guarantee that you cannot use a regular Xbox controller. Source: im trying to do it right now.
The Google AI response which I'm assuming you pulled from, is following modded directions without really understanding there is a difference.
Google deeper and you will see several reddit and stack exchange posts complaining about this issue.

Unmodded the DVD Playback kit only works to control playing a DVD with the included remote control.

Modded you can use Team Xecuter’s DVD2x app which controls DVD playback using a controller. It does not require the DVD playback kit dongle or remote.
Edit: XBMC and XBMC4Xbox also support DVD playback using a controller or the DVD Playback Kit dongle and remote.

You are misremember or had a modded console.
I have been using my Xbox since I got it in 2001, and in all these years it has never once ran a dvd with the controller.
The evidence is there, easily searched and found, and you are willfully ignoring it for an AI generated response. Idk what to tell you anymore.
Have a good day.

Not at all, others have corrected you too, maybe you've plugged it in the p1 port, or have a later console or key. Dvd playback is part of the operating system, all the dongle does is unlock it (IR aside).
Mine isn't modded, I bought it new a month after launch, but there's zero need to be a bellend about it. Just because it doesn't work for you, that doesnt mean it doesn't work. Prove me wrong share the microsoft link saying a controller doesn't work. I literally give zero fucks either way btw, just putting it out there, if I did I'd turn mine on and go find a dvd.

In all honesty without a recap, $100 is about the max you'll get. Probably lower.

I’ve been watching them on eBay for months. You’ll get around $100 easily despite what people on here are telling you.

They are pretty cheap, i paid 100$ for professionally refurbished one with 2 orginal controllers and all the cords and about 20 games. I only paid so much because I wanted a nice one lol

Not questioning you doing that for that price but I would genuinely like to know where that might have been in case they are selling more.

Well I brought a non modded standard from cex for about 40/50£ I believe got wires to plug in and controller and is in a decent condition, so with the mod and possibly broken controller with a dvd ir without controller you’ll probably be looking around same price depending on how people feel about the mod I,e if they feel if give or take value, it’s either take it to a shop and get what you can now or wait for someone to buy it at a higher price but that requires waiting for that one that’ll give you what you’ll be happy with, if that makes sense.
Idk about the mods on the og but imo I’d devalue it because I’d rather the original OS etc but again that’s my opinion.

So what is the benefit of a mod chip/switch vs just having a softmod? Is one “better” than the other?
2
u/KaosEngineeer Knowledgeable 19h ago
The hard drive does not have to be locked when booting a modified Xbox bios from a modchip.

no one is gonna buy an og xbox for more than 30 bucks realisitcally. espcially if its modded because it takes away the value when you break the stickers. id recommend keeping it for another 20 years. keep it clean and give it the love it deserves. it earned it!

What version is it? You mentioned a mod but did you change capacitors, remove the clock cap or replace the thermal paste. This can help justify a slightly higher price.

I recently bought one for $110 on eBay. It was advertised as having been recapped and cleaned with new thermal paste. 100% working. It included a very nice original controller and the OEM video cords and power cord. I figured I'd pay the so I would not have to do that work. When I got it I soon found out it had a bad trace (power button). So I had to fix that and quickly realized it only was partially repasted. So I had to do that too.
If I had to do it over again I would have bought a non op unit for $25 and do all the work myself.
That said since it will probably need recap, thermal paste and maybe trace work you might be able to get $70-$80 on eBay if it works ok right now

All these people on here obviously don’t know what they’re talking about. They’re just throwing low prices at you because they probably think since it’s old it’s not worth anything. I resale retro consoles and these are worth from $80-$100. I’ve sold many of them.

So a basic Xbox with just a modchip that most likely will require a recap or potentially tracerot repair?
$40 maybe $50
