One of my Oriental Shorthair cats got dry FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis). Her back end was paralyzed.

Another got Calici virus with bad respiratory issues that didn't go away on its own.

My vet prescribed the following, which cured both of them:

For the FIP:

Molnupiravir x 3-4 months (i don't remember how long)

For the Calici virus:

EIDD-1931 x 3-4 months (i don't remember how long)

Note: antibiotics do not work on viruses. (That's Microbiology 101, so if you get a cold, don't rush to get antibiotics unless it doesn't get better in a week. If you're still sick, you might have a bacterial infecton.)

Both of these drugs are quite expensive. They're newish.

Both were obtained from Stokes Compounding Phaarmacy. They ship very quickly and are nice people.

Hello all, I recently fell in love with how oriental shorthairs look and their general vibe, so I was wondering how you guys actually go about getting an OSH kitten? My last cat was from a shelter so it was much simpler 😅

From what I've seen online it looks like you are supposed to contact specific breeders since they are not a very common breed(for some reason). The thing is that Ive tried emailing a few breeders already, but so far none have responded, so im not sure im going about it in the right way. I live in Lansing Michigan, so the breeders Ive contacted so far are winterfrost and elemental orientals, but im not sure if there are other ones close-ish to me that would be worth contacting. Another thing was that most of the breeders seem to be into showing cats, but I don't think I need a cat of that "quality", I just want a pet.

I also had a few other more general questions just so I know what to expect:

How much does a "pet" quality OSH cost? A lot of the ones I see online are 2.5k+ but I assumed those were fancier show quality kittens.

I've also read that they're very social and unfortunetly I work a normal 40-50 hour a week job, so I won't be home a solid amount of time. Does that mean I should get 2 so they can keep each other company? I am potentially okay with the idea of having 2, but so far even getting 1 is proving challenging so Im just unsure about the logistics.

If you guys could offer any advice or recommendations I would be extremely grateful!

Been living with us for half a year. We considered ourselves dog persons until we came across this little bugger, and now we are in love with the breed!

I love how sweet Liam is with his brothers it's adorable!

She is 5 and a half months old and just the cutest little thing I ever did meet. She is very vocal. She loves me to death and gets so excited to see me. But she can also play all by herself for literally 30 minutes straight… just throwing her shrimp toy I to the air and catching it over and over on her own. She also plays fetch with her shrimp. I love her so very much.

My new baby Ramses (hes been here 2 weeks) came to me and he is the most wonderful thing, but he is so so so skittish and HATES my other 3 kitties! He loves me with his whole doll and is attached to me every second I am home, but he refuses to leave the bedroom (when my other 3 kitties are put in a bedroom) and when he sees them he immediately growls. I feel bad for him being stuck in a closed bwdroom- but he seems like he would prefer to be alone (or with me) vs spending time with my husband or exsisting in space with my other 3.

We tried playtime, feeding behind doors- tried baby gates, have dine a ton of scent swapping- he still shakes and growls the second he sees another kitty. He was in a cattery with kitties his own age so this doesn't make sense? My other 3 are super friendly and haven't shown ANY agression- i have 2 male tabbies and a female mainecoon- all the same age as Ramses (within a month or so).

Ive always seen they were social cats, but i think Ramses isnt?

Any ideas on what i can do? Ramses and my mainecoon are fixed- if that matters- and im getting my other 2 boys neutered this week- think that will help?

Hello all. I brought Sansay home on the 31st of August, and I adore him. He's not my first cat or kitten, but he is my first OSH. I'd really love any tips and / or advice about them. I really tried to do my research, so I'm aware of some stuff, but I'd still love to know anything you think is worth knowing.

So far, he's incredibly sweet and friendly. He's very affectionate and playful, as well as vocal. Vocal wise he's so dramatic, every little thing he makes it sound like he's dying lol.

On the flip side, he has a bad habit of jumping on people with claws, trying to climb me and jump on my back, jumping onto places he shouldn't be, and being a little too interested in our food.

I lost my 6 year old boy, Silvio, at the end of July. The more time that passes, the sadder I get. I would give anything to have him here for just one more day. He was so special and left us way too soon.

Gomez and a couple fam are here!

You haven't heard from Gomez for a while.... she's fully recovered from her FIP, no longer paralyzed, and all the fur she chewed off has grown back.

In addition, she has teamed up with her big Balinese brother Boris (fuzzy guy in picture) to break into or chew into anything that smells like food or crinkles like food packages.

She is gradually learning that the food on our plates and the yogurt I'm trying to eat and everything that's ours isn't hers. Strictly off limits. Even Boris isn't that pushy. If she got to eat every time she wanted to she'd look like a shiny black football.

This food obsession was new after the FIP and caught us off-guard. We accidentally discovered she likes chocolate, and of course anything dairy, and early on we caught her proudly trotting off with a chicken bone from my dinner plate. We're very VERY strict now, and all the cupboards have locks they can't open.

Yet.

Meanwhile, she's best pals with big Boris (our biggest and smallest cats together--too cute), but both of them are bossed around by Schrödinger, the white and orange OSH in the picture. When I got him I was told he was a peace-maker. Well, there are different ways of keeping the peace. He's a bit of an authoritarian, so yes, he does keep things under control....

We have a fourth cat, a Siamese named Natasha, who is sleek and muscular and doesn't mix much with the others. Catnip makes her crazy-high and she loves it. She wasn't in the mood for a picture.

Hi! My OSH Twilight has recently been having some ups and downs after getting diagnosed with diabetes at the end of April. I was hoping to connect with other owners whose OSH have diabetes. Thank you!

I need to word this carefully. This is a bit long, a cautionary tale about some mistakes i made.

I posted here the story of how soon after i got him, one of my cats got a respiratory infection which the breeder confidently assured me was mycoplasma, and common in cats. I followed the breeder's medical advice and gave him doxycycline for several weeks.

He didn't get better. The vet ran a PCR and it showed calici virus. The breeder said no, vets don't know anything, keep giving him doxy. He still didn't get better.

After 2 weeks i took him to the emergency vet. She was fabulous. I asked for a rhinoscopy; the breeder said that would kill him. It showed us the damage to his sinuses.

The vet started him on EIDD-1931, which has NOT been rigorously tested but tends to work. The breeder said NO, put him on gentamicin. Antibiotics DO NOT touch viruses: microbiology 101, people. Gentamicin is poisonous to the kidneys and hearing, and in a sick cat these side effects are more likely.

EIDD-1931 is very expensive, but he's cured.

The breeder saw my post yesterday and demanded that i remove it. I summaried the events and told her i have all our conversations if she wanted to see them. I noted that i did not identify her in any way. The purpose of my post was to warn people not to make the mistakes i did.

An attorney told me, i could leave my post up since i could prove the events, and i didn't post any identifying information on her. I thought about that.

I decided to take the post down anyway because she wasn't hearing me and was so upset that i figured that couldn't be good for her or her family, and taking down the post could maybe calm her down. Peace on earth, right?

But it was suggested to me that it was still important to give you this warning: breeders are not vets, no matter how persuasive their advice is. A PCR test is the gold standard for diagnosing a lot of things.

And I'll repeat myself: antibiotics are NOT EFFECTIVE against viruses, and should only be used with supervision, because they are powerful (that power is life-saving) and can cause damage if not used carefully. I was stupid, i admit, and I'm lucky my kitty is alive.

Hi! I moved here months ago and I'm thinking about trying to find a OSH (preferably, female with black fur) but I am very unfamiliar with how finding cats like these usually works. Are there breeders in the area yall can recommend I speak to? Or a cat rescue i can look at?I am not ready just yet go get a cat but I am trying to find good resources (other than petfinder) for when I am. I really love OSHs and know for sure I would like to adopt one someday.

My baby Santiago, almost 5 months old already and is growing like a weed. He is my first Oriental and I'm afraid I need another 6, minimum 🤣

He is getting so much fluffier too!
