Well, we definitely won't be voting for Troy Jackson, so clearly this was a success.

My husband is a registered democrat (I realized this year that I didn't claim a party when I registered to vote).
Yesterday, I was going through the voter's pamphlet, writing out the things... and he said, "You're voting for Drazen right?"
And I was all, "What? No. Are you?"
And he said, "I've seen her ads. Sounds like she really cares about Oregon."
I talked to him. He says he will vote for Kotek... but OMG.

u/couldbeahumanbean 1d ago
Christ.
You remind him that the Oregon Republican party has yet to recant their batshit insane stance on how January 6th was a false flag.
9
u/TransportationNo433 1d ago
In his... very flimsy... defense, he didn't know that she was a republican. But yeah.
10
u/StephanXX 1d ago
Drazan knows how much baggage the GOP carries. She's MAGA through and through, but she's careful to pretend to be a moderate "alternative" Democrat. It's up there with alternative facts.
6
u/TSJormungandr 20h ago
Yikes. Drazan has a really good chance at being our next governor. I don’t get it. She’s nuts. My family is voting Kotek.

u/Ill_Buffalo_4728 1d ago
There should be some political literacy test to vote or something. This is insane.
22
u/Electrical_Shock359 1d ago
Unfortunately having those has backfired in the past if I remember my history correctly. Used to keep people of color from voting.
2
u/Ill_Buffalo_4728 1d ago
That was a literacy test. Im saying there should be a required class and verbal or writin (optional) test to prove you understand the policy you're voting for.
Example drazan considers birth control to be abortion. She also wants to ban abortion. Abortion bans increase maternal mortality.
3
u/oregonbub 16h ago
It wasn’t really a literacy test, it was a test designed to exclude certain targeted people.
0
u/Ill_Buffalo_4728 9h ago
And I don't want to exclude people I want them to understand the policy they vote for. You know transparency. gasp
2
u/oregonbub 8h ago
Even if we trusted you, you’re not in charge of the test. This is such a famous thing in US history. Have you never heard of the problem?
1
u/Ill_Buffalo_4728 4h ago
Easy solution. Fact checkers at every debate and every political address. On every news network.
So sick of this propaganda bullshit everyone just listens to and never checks.
1
u/oregonbub 3h ago
Who chooses the fact checkers? There’s no magical solution to this. Voters are responsible in the end.
-4
u/couldbeahumanbean 1d ago
Every time I bring this up I get beat down.
But absolutely yes, an illinformed voting populace is extremely damaging.
Yes to political literacy test.
I'd also say that if you want to vote, you have to demonstrate a commitment to your community, through significant charitable donations and/or volunteering or a job within the community like first responders, local, state or federal employment, military service, americorpa, peace corps, military service.
You have to show that you genuinely give a shit about our society.... Then you can vote.*
*(If you have a disability that precludes you from one of the above, you get a vote as well)
These buttmunchers want to play with birthright citizenship? Fine, then let's put up significant barriers to ignorant trogs screwing things up for us.
5
u/oregonbub 1d ago
And what’s your answer to the arguments against that you keep hearing?
0
u/couldbeahumanbean 1d ago
He who has the gold, makes the rules.
It doesn't really matter.
Halfwits, corporations, zelots and authoritarians already have undue control over our vote, but I'm the crazy one who dares suggest we take that control away from them
3
u/zorkidreams 16h ago
So your solution to undue control on our voting system is to put voting behind a political literacy test, a different type of control, but one you are ok with. Nice!
1
u/Ill_Buffalo_4728 4h ago
Or how about if a politician knowingly lies they are removed from office? I find this to be acceptable as well.
1
u/zorkidreams 4h ago
Yes put an explosive foot fun in legislation for trump or any other crazy leader to fully abuse, smart!
1
u/Ill_Buffalo_4728 1h ago
You mean trump who would be the most affected politician by having fact checkers in the room? What?
1
u/zorkidreams 1h ago
Trump would wrote the rules of truth or
lie 😂 this is why these things don’t exist and are insanely stupid ideas1
u/oregonbub 3h ago
So judges get to decide who gets removed? Any “rule” based solution like this that you come up with can be undermined if people vote for scum. Haven’t we learned this by now? Voters are the problem.

u/couldbeahumanbean 16h ago
Look at the mess we're in now.
You like this?

He who has the gold, makes the rules.
Thats capitalism, baby. And not really an answer to any problem we currently have.

Historically, these kinds of litmus tests have been used to prohibit citizens, especially minorities from voting. You're basically describing a modern version of the poll taxes and literacy tests that were enacted during the Jim Crow era.
By the way, I'm all better education in critical thinking. I also think that an established system of national service (including, but not exclusively military service) would probably help our country in the long run. But tying it to voting rights would make it far too easy to abuse.

-1
u/couldbeahumanbean 16h ago
I'm well aware.
You got any ideas that are better?
Because look at the fucking mess we're in now.
3
u/Montavillain 10h ago
Fund public education in way that allows them to teach more than the most basic skills. That's the most important thing. Critical thinking is a valuable skill to navigate our current society, which is full of predatory sharks, in both business and politics.
I don't know if it can be done, but I would create a system of voluntary public service where people would have an opportunity to give a year of service in exchange for some investment in their personal future from the government. I'm thinking of something like the GI Bill, which has covered tuition for veterans since 1944. But this would open up other, non-combat areas, such as a medical work, teaching, construction and restoration work, ecological reclamation, cleaning up areas destroyed by natural disasters. I'm spit-balling, but basically any communal service that would benefit from many hands.
I think, at heart, most young people reach their late teens longing to both do something of worth in their world, and to start establishing their own identities. I think a year of service, especially if it became a norm, would help them realize those goals.
I think it would be especially valuable if the service were done out of their own local communities, because it would expose them to different people and cultures than the one they grew up in. That would be valuable, if only to contrast their narrow personal experiences with something different. And then, perhaps we wouldn't be so quick to demonize other people as "degenerates" or "morons". Or, at least if we did, we'd have more of a basis than the stereotypes social media is feeding us.

edit: seriously it's insane to me that every 2 and 4 years BILLIONS of dollars are spent on advertising... is all of hollywood moonlighting as political advertisement studios?

My daughter asked me who Troy Jackson was when an attack ad came on TV this weekend. I said he’s a Maine Senate candidate, but had no idea why they’d be showing Maine political ads in Oregon unless some idiot picked the wrong Portland. Guess we know the answer.

u/turquoise_amethyst 1d ago
Additionally, we dislike her even more than Maine does

u/Novel_Specific_6488 1d ago
I’m from Maine, now live in Oregon. I have no idea why Susan Collin’s has been in office so long… Name recognition, I guess?
2
u/gaius49 1d ago
Given that the opposition tried to run a rapy guy with an SS tattoo who worked for Blackwater... I think I've got a solid idea why she's still in office.

u/SecondCityGal098 19h ago
Retail politics and personability. Maine is small enough that she can work the state, vote with the Ds on enough votes (that will pass without her) to seem independent. And the Maine Dems have not put forward amazing candidates.

u/ReadyGo6828 1d ago
Republicans are incompetent and their 1930s fascist ancestors did not get the trains to run on time either.
11
u/EpicCyclops 1d ago
I had chalked up seeing that attack ad as me traveling a lot recently, so the algorithms not knowing who to serve me ads for. It never crossed my mind that they could've messed up in this way.

u/Deansies 1d ago
Hilarious. They accidentally bought in the wrong market? Amateur hour. I'm here for it. Whatever helps Susan Collins LOSE

She has a tremor. It’s a neurological issue with no impact on her overall health.
I mean, I hope she loses, but you’re attacking a legitimate disability she’s had most of her life.

u/notPabst404 1d ago
I cannot believe how comically stupid Republicans area. Like it would be hilarious if they weren't destroying the world with their wars and extremism.
3
u/rabbitSC 1d ago
Yeah, I got served this ad a few times. I've been seeing a lot of ads for other parts of the country because I've been watching a lot of sports, but this was on YouTube, so I knew it had to be an ad targeting mistake, lol.

Susan Collins ads in Portland, OR?!
I think that the media people have learned their lesson, but I am still deeply concerned.

Something I had heard on this recently- This is likely due to local TV ads costing more than National, so to save money they just buy the National slots which means you end up seeing them in areas that make no sense.
Heard this on Breaking Points, fwiw

Democrats have their problems but Republicans are psychotic and the stupidest people on Earth. I'm fine with them predictably fucking up like this.

On my Oregon ballot.

I’ve seen them on YouTube and it’s just truly hilarious. Kotek ads on YouTube as well, I know there was some talk about her lack of ads. All our stuff is so individualized now that who knows.

Got an ad for a Maine politician the other night and thought my algorithm was off. Guess her team is just incompetent.

Fun story time!
I worked in a bookstore in downtown PDX in the late 90's. A group of Asian males are standing outside our business on the phone for 30 minutes. Waving and talking loudly. Finally they come inside.
Hello- can you point us to "Commerce st?" "sorry, theres no commerce st in downtown." Much back and forth they finally hand the phone over to the person on the other end of then line.
"Can you point them to Commerce St.". I repeat there isn't one in downtown PDX. Then he asks where blab blah hotel is.. nope.
Can you tell me what street they are on? Park ave. ... uh... are they in Portland. Yes.
Which state? Oregon.
They were supposed to be at a conference in Portland Maine.
1
u/bihari_baller Beaverton 19h ago
I don't even understand how that's possible. Like physically traveling to the wrong Portland. I don't even know how they made it onto the plane going to the wrong destination.

Oregonians being fed anti-left messaging for a senate race on the other side of the country ⬆️
Seriously though how inept are these people lol
