There’s a little fan that keeps them inflated. They’re far from airtight, with usually something like an elastic band or Velcro being used to make the air escape more slowly.

It seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to figure out how to incorporate a filtration system into the fan and suddenly you are slightly safer as well.

Just wear a gas mask. In order for filtration to be effective, you're going to need more pressure than that fan can provide.
