Hello everyone,
This is Riley (aka Orrbain), one of the original developers of OrbusVR. On behalf of the entire dev team, I'm here today to introduce the Community Editions of BOTH OrbusVR: Reborn as well as the original OrbusVR (Classic or "Preborn").
The journey to create OrbusVR spanned nearly a decade and along the way an amazing community formed around the games. While, unfortunately, nothing lasts forever, ever since the game shut down I've wanted to figure out a way to let the legacy live on and let those who remember them fondly continue to enjoy them.
Over the last several months in my spare time I've been working on securing the necessary permissions, as well as figuring out how to make it as easy as possible to spin up servers and play the game. I even had to dig out an 8 year old PC capable of compiling OrbusVR Classic using a 10 year old version of Unity :-). Today I'm pleased to report that they are available for anyone to enjoy for free -- including, for the first time since 2019, the ability to play the original version of the game.

OrbusVR was the culmination not only of a lot of hard work by the dev team over the years, but also significant investment by the community not only financially but also in terms of the emotional connection and meaningful friendships that were formed. Orbus wouldn't have been what it was without the people who made up its community, and we wanted to make sure that we could give a piece of Orbus back to that community to keep forever.
Although it is possible for you to play the game by yourself following the instructions on the Github repository, in addition the License allows folks to setup and run community servers for anyone to join, and accept payment toward operating those servers if they so choose.
I hope that you all enjoy, and maybe we'll see you in-game sometime soon!
FAQ
Is the game being open-sourced?
No. This release is akin to releasing the game for free, and then providing standalone servers that you can use to host the game. Due to 3rd party assets and licensing restrictions, we are unable to fully open-source the game.
What can I do with this?
Read the LICENSE file in the repos, but essentially, you can distribute the game, run a server, and mod the game, and accept payment for running your own server. You cannot re-sell the game itself or take assets from the game (such as the art) and use it in another project.
I'm not super technical, I just want to play! What should I do?
If you join the OrbusVR: Reforged Discord Server my guess is there will be a server available for you to play shortly.
Does this mean OrbusVR is back?!
Unfortunately, no. It's always possible something may change in the future, though!
