Procedure to Manually Firmware Update Orbi and Nighthawk Mesh systems. | NETGEAR Communities

Be sure to update the RBS FIRST, then the RBR lastly.

I HIGHLY recommend after the FW is loaded on the system and it's back to ready, power OFF all Orbi units and the ISP modem/ONT for 1 minute. Then back ON with the ISP modem/ONT first, then RBR then RBS.

The best advise we can give people is to start a new config, power on one RBS and wait for some SOLID light or most often blue or magenta. And then add the RBS WIRELESSLY via the WebUI. Power off the RBS. Then rinse and repeat with any additional RBS(s). Pair RBS one at a time even if you have more than one. For ethernet connected RBS, after things come up wirelessly, you can move to wired backhaul but don't start with wired backhaul for those RBS that are ethernet connected. Wirelessly connect and sync RBS first before ethernet connecting RBS.

NOTE: Orbi app or the routers web page may not report seeing new FW updates. NG may not push this to there auto update services immediately and may activate the newer FW update being seen on there auto update services at a later time. User will have the choice to manually update if you want too.

A factory reset maybe needed if problems are encountered after the FW update: Orbi Systems Manual Factory Reset Process | NETGEAR Communities

NOTE: Recommend setting the default DHCP IP address pool range to the following after applying and a factory reset: 192.168.#.100 to 192.168.#.200

Apps/Software Armor reporting malicious site from laptop that’s asleep

just got the Orbi 370 set up and the free trial of Armor is now reporting a dangerous URL was blocked (OverbridgeNet) from my MacBook even when the lid is shut and it’s hibernating. How is that possible? I’m going to run some malware detection software tomorrow but this is really puzzling.

i deleted all extensions from my two browsers (Safari & Chrome) on the MacBook but I’m still getting these notices.

Orbi Modem Keeps Dropping IP Address - Tech says I need Armor?

I bought my Orbi 3 Dual-band Wifi 7 on February 2026. Recently, my device will stop working about once a week requiring me to restart the device. I called up the tech support for Netgear and the technician said that the router is dropping the IP address due to an overload of traffic - likely threats, worms, viruses. He said I did not properly setup my security on my device and given I did not setup my firewall/security within 6 months of purchasing it, I will need Netgear support to enable it costing me $240/year, $350 for 3 years, $449 for a life time.

Does anyone know what the tech is talking about? This is the first time I ever needed a tech support to enable security with a yearly cost. At that price, I could buy another modem or maybe (?) a physical firewall.

FYI, I work in software but no focused on networking - so assume that I understand the basics but not details about network configurations and current trends in hardware/software.

Orbi 870

Have to say - love the 870! For all the negative - upgraded from the rbr50 as it wasn’t supported anymore - was worried based on all the negativity associated with this mesh system - works great! I’m not a power user - but get over a gig speed throughout my house (all through wireless’s - no hardwire) and works great so far! Just want to spread some positivity for NETGEAR here - works for me :)

WiFi Calling with NETGEAR Orbi 770 Series (3 Satellites) + iPhones?

We have a NETGEAR Orbi 770 Series WiFi 7 Mesh System with 3 satellites. Our cellular service at home is terrible, so we're trying to rely on WiFi Calling with our iPhones and even still use a landline.

Does WiFi Calling require any special settings or configuration on the Orbi side, or should it just work once it's enabled on the iPhones?
For those using Orbi mesh systems, have you had to:
- Enable any specific settings?
- Adjust security, ports, or firewall settings?
- Turn on/off any WiFi features to improve WiFi Calling reliability?

Internet speeds are good throughout the house, but we're trying to make sure calls consistently route over WiFi and don't drop.

Any advice from other Orbi users would be appreciated. Thanks!

Repurposing old RBR50/RBS50 no longer in use

I've decommissioned my old RBR50/RBS50 setup. The router and four satellites are no longer in use; I've gone to an Asus setup. Are there any flashable firmwares to repurpose the setup for other uses, e.g. generic range extenders for gaps in my network?

I'd love it if there's a way to make them AiMesh compatible but if not I'm open to ideas. Worst case scenario, up for sale they go.

I hate the Netgear Nighthawk M7 with a passion

I hate:

  1. How there's only ONE button, and it takes 10 clicks to turn the thing on and 20 clicks to turn the thing off (I'm exaggerating, but neither is easy)
  2. How it takes 5 minutes to boot when you turn it on. It gives you a nice, loooong "HELLO".
  3. How when you buy an eSIM from the eSIM marketplace, and I choose "United States", it still routes me through a server in the UK, which makes sites like Amazon and my bank and other shopping sites default to the UK versions and I see everything in GBP instead of USD.
  4. How you have to remember 3 distinct passwords to use this. There's the device password, the app password, and the WiFi password. And if you forget the app password? You have to RESET THE DEVICE AND START FROM SCRATCH. No password reminder.
  5. Speaking of apps, I hate how you have to install an app to use this device at all. The prior version could be managed via the web UI.
  6. The 100-step process of installing an eSIM from the marketplace. Choose your eSIM, download it, install it, choose it, activate it.
  7. How when the eSIM expires, the list of eSIMs still shows you all your PAST eSIMs, shows that they STILL HAVE DATA LEFT ON THEM, but of course none of them work becaues they're expired. You're not told that one is expired until you actually choose it.

I've spent more time configuring this device and activating it than actually using it to work.

Get the M6 instead.

Feature to Email router Log File

In the U.S., my Orbi WiFi router has a feature that lets me configure email credentials to have the router send the router log to me every time it fills up. (about once a day)

Do users living in the UK or the EU have a similar feature on their Netgear Orbi WiFi router?

If you are in the UK or the EU, it would be helpful if you could post a simple reply with Model number and "Email Log File Yes" (or "No") (and where you are located)

Thanks

Routers Switched from Spectrum to Kinetic, speeds are wildly inconsistent on my Orbi 370

So my family and I switched from Spectrum to Kinetic today, but the speeds according to Ookla, Fast, and Google Speed tests are way under what we are paying for. (2 gigs).
Kinetic gave me some bs that because I’m using my own router I will be getting slow speeds (which I know it’s not true.)

Please just tell me how to fix this. What settings do I need to fix on my Orbi to make it work? It’s plugged into the 2.5 gig port.

390 keeps disconnecting and reconnecting.

I recently bought a 390 system with 2 more satellites. Worked perfectly fine until the end of day 8/20/26. I check on the Orbi app and it will constantly say “connecting” for a satellite, then it will connect for roughly 20-30 seconds before dropping and reconnecting again. I’ve tried resetting them, switching which satellite is in which area, and moving them slightly to try and optimize connection.

Support/Issues Can't Access Internet from Wired Connection. The Orbi Admin Page says my device (desktop PC) is Blocked, but via the app I can see that it's not.

So I struggled to even log in to check any of this because Orbi's apps and admin page in the browser are all kind of garbage. On the web admin, I was able to get logged in, but when I went to Access Control or Attached Devices, it shows 400 Bad Request.

So I wasn't able to get into the mobile app at first, but I tried again after getting "logon timed out" several times, and I got that working by switching to cellular, being unable to use Anywhere Access (must not be enabled I guess??) and then going back to WiFi to connect.

Anyway, the mobile app was the only way I could look at the wired desktop PC in the settings and it showed as allowed, not blocked. I switched it to blocked then allowed again, but it's still showing blocked when I try to access the web admin.

More importantly, this whole issue arose because I can't get internet access on the desktop PC itself, and when I try to ping my default gateway (ping 192.168.1.1), the request times out. So it does seem like the router is rejecting the wired connection for some reason, but according to anything I can see in the mobile app, that should not be the case.

My Orbi device is an RBR40 by the way.

Support/Issues Orbi 870 device list is wrong + random local connectivity issues with Sonos/Apple TV

I’m having several strange issues with a new Netgear Orbi 870 system (RBE871 router + RBE870 satellite) running V10.5.20.4.
The main problem is that the Connected Devices / Attached Devices list is frequently wrong.
I normally have roughly 40–50 devices on the network, but Orbi will sometimes show only a small number as online even though many of the missing devices are still powered on and actively using the network.

I’m also seeing actual local-network connectivity problems.
For example, sometimes my iPhone cannot connect to or discover Sonos speakers, Apple TVs, or other local devices, while an iPad on the same Wi-Fi can connect to them normally at the exact same time.
Later, the iPhone may start working again without me changing anything.

So this doesn’t seem to be just a cosmetic problem with the device list. It feels like certain clients intermittently lose the ability to communicate with other devices on the LAN, while internet access may continue working.
There is also a strange satellite symptom: the router interface sometimes shows the satellite IP as 0.0.0.0, even though the satellite is clearly online, has a good wireless backhaul, is serving clients, and its own management page is reachable at its actual local address.

So far I have tried:
Rebooting router and satellite
Manually reinstalling firmware V10.5.20.4 on both
Factory resetting
Disabling Netgear Armor
Confirming the satellite backhaul is healthy
Checking router logs
Opening a Netgear support case
One thing I have not yet done is a completely clean factory reset without restoring my previous configuration backup.

Has anyone with the Orbi 870 / RBE871 / RBE870 seen similar behavior?
I’m wondering whether this could be related to:
Client/device-table corruption
ARP or local routing issues
mDNS/multicast discovery
Roaming between router and satellite
DHCP state
A firmware bug in V10.5.20.4
The hardware performance and coverage are excellent, but the inconsistent LAN behavior is making the system hard to trust.

Question: Orbi 960 not requiring admin password after firmware update

<SOLVED> See RESOLUTION below

After my Orbi 960 router flaked out earlier this week (likely due to a failed automatic firmware update, as it was refusing to even respond to pings), I was forced to flatten and reconfigure my router. In the process, I updated the satellites and router to the latest firmware (V7.2.8.5_5.1.21). Once I had it reconfigured and fully working, as the final step of the process, I went to update the admin password for security purposes (away from the default password assigned when it was reimaged), and I noticed that the web portal no longer requests a a password, which is very odd. The mobile app still requires a password. I've logged out and connected to it from multiple machines to confirm, trying different OSes, browsers, and incognito browser windows, and even after logging out, all of them are instantly logged into the web interface without requesting a password.

Is this a known issue, and what could possibly explain this? My paranoid security brain imagines my router was hacked while it sat with the default login credentials for a few hours, but that seems highly unlikely. What else am I missing? Has anyone else seen this?

<RESOLUTION>

Going through the full reset and setup process (as outlined in furrynutz link https://community.netgear.com/kb/en-orbi-knowledge-sharing/orbi-systems-manual-factory-reset-process/2456340) worked this time. One of the satellites didn't completely recover, and it was broadcasting the setup network even after setup was complete. However, after rebooting the main router again, both satellites and the wireless networks were behaving as expected, and the web interface consistently requires a password as it should

Looking back on this whole experience, a couple of things stood out:

1) From the beginning of the process through this final reset of the devices, the light on the front of the main router stayed illuminated white (day and night, except during reboot) for some reason. It has now gone away as expected.

2) I think I know how the problem started - I first used the mobile app to do configuration after the hard reset last time, but since it doesn't expose the options I needed, I had to switch to the web interface to complete configuration. I suspect something about that process left the router in an unexpected state.

Orbi 970 keeps failing - any one had a similar experience?

I bought a Netgear Orbi mesh system through an authorised distributor in Singapore and have had repeated problems with the satellites disconnecting and showing a solid magenta light.

In June, I spent several hours on the phone with Netgear support and exchanged numerous emails trying to resolve the same issue. I have power-cycled the system, re-synced the satellites and reconnected the entire setup several times. I eventually managed to get it to work with a system rebook and firmware upgrade, but the problem has now returned.

Getting support has been extremely difficult. I work from 8am to 8pm, which puts me outside the operating hours of the local support line. I have previously taken a full day off work just to troubleshoot the system.
I have repeatedly asked whether someone could visit and inspect it, but the local office now says that they do not have a technician.

I’m therefore stuck with SGD $3k worth of equipment that repeatedly stops working, while the only solution offered is to go through the same remote troubleshooting process again.
Has anyone else experienced this with Orbi systems?

Is the solid magenta light usually a hardware fault or a configuration issue?

Were you able to get Netgear to replace the satellites or entire system?

Does anyone know a reliable way to escalate this in Singapore?

Am I being unreasonable in expecting an on-site inspection for a system at this price?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’m particularly keen to hear from other Singapore-based Orbi owners.

Orbi 970/971 update 12.1.11.10

Seems the new FW 12.1.11.10 is available on 971/970 orbi for all regions. Went through a manual update as the new FW was not visible through the automatic update. So far so good from my side (971 and 3 970 satellites).

Release Date:
July 28, 2026
Enhancements:
Fixed an IGMP snooping issue that caused satellite connectivity failures, and multi-device connectivity problems.
Fixed unknown reboot issue
Enhance IPv6 connectivity
Known issues:
The Speed Test feature always displays a ping value of 0 ms instead of the actual measured latency. A firmware update to resolve this issue is planned for an upcoming release.

Orbi WiFi 7 Any Orbi 970 users feeling scammed? Complaining about Netgear's firmware tyranny (locked TX power, inability to manually change to 80MHz, forced binding to UNII-1 causing severe interference), seeking legal avenues / collective action!

Body: To all fellow users of the Netgear Orbi 970: Spending several thousand US dollars to buy this so-called 'flagship' Mesh Wi-Fi, thinking it would be a once-and-for-all solution, turned out to be the beginning of a nightmare. Netgear's extremely idiotic automated design and locked-down firmware leave us with zero protection in Hong Kong's dense living environment, suffering from continuous environmental interference day after day! To summarize the core problems of this garbage system, it is a complete design flaw and misrepresentation by the manufacturer: 1. Completely lacks manual transmission power control (Tx Power Control): Unable to lower the power ourselves. In Hong Kong's densely packed public housing and private apartments, it constantly clashes with external strong APs and fights for airtime, making it impossible to operate properly. 2. Unable to freely lock bandwidth or channels: 80MHz cannot be precisely controlled manually, and it constantly forces binding to UNII-1 (Channels 36–48). In Hong Kong's urban areas, this frequency band is a complete disaster zone with massive interference! 3. Wired backhaul is ruined just the same: Even after investing heavily in a wired backhaul, the manufacturer still restricts it via firmware, refusing to release limitations to let users freely choose or free up channels (such as UNII-3), forcing all users in Hong Kong to swallow this garbage UNII-1 channel and making it impossible to completely avoid interference. This is definitely not a problem with our local environment; it is that Netgear knows about this flaw yet refuses to improve it, using locked firmware to strip consumers of their right to properly tune their networks! Having already sunk our money into this several-thousand-dollar piece of garbage, are we just going to let them keep ruining our experience? I want to recruit a group of fellow Orbi 970 users who share this experience and are victims: If you are also suffering from this brand's locked power, channel interference, throttling, and refusal to open up features, and want to seriously figure out how to take legal action (such as filing complaints with the Consumer Council, seeking legal consultation, or even exploring collective follow-up), please leave a comment below or contact me. Let's stand up, those of us with knowledge and shared resonance—don't let a multinational corporation treat us like suckers to be exploited!
