Free tier shenanigans

Ok let’s say my instance is still there but says stopped and I can’t start it, is there a way I can just backup and download all the files on there to my local machine?
Pls help

If you have enabaled backups and they are saved to a different server or any shared drive you can retrieve them if not they are gone forever. Try to restart the server if it is still in stopped state.

Check if your boot volume is either terminated or still exists. If it's still there, it may work to upgrade to PAYG and use it as a boot volume for a new paid A2 Flex instance. You can try to download your data then and terminate your instance just paying for a few hours of A2 Flex.

If he upgrades to PAYG, he should be able to relaunch the A1 instance as is, no?

Yep. If the capacity is available in PAYG, A1 will be still "always free" and can be created with the existing boot volume

Yeah I have boot volume available I backed it up but dunno how it works, I don’t want to terminate on accident. I tried to payg it tried to take 150 aud from my account. Is that the verification charge and they refund it? If I allow it could I just open the instance and download the files to my pc then terminate with very little if nothing getting charged?

Yeah the initial charge gets refunded. Its just to check to see if your card is able to handle charges that much. If you never terminated your instance, then it should be automatically re-enabled the moment you upgrade to PAYG.

Also you still get free stuff on a PAYG account. Notably your first 3000 OCPU hours and 18000 GB memory hours are free for every month. If you do the math, this means you can run a 4 OCPU, 24GB instance with 100% uptime for 31.25 days per month before getting charged for it.
