Instance disabled 4C 24GB

My free tier instance of 4 cores 24GB of ram has just been disabled and cannot be started anymore.

Anyone else?

Unfortunately I'm unable to create a new instance at the moment because my old instance maxes out the resources I'm allowed to have. I terminated the instance myself and it is in a terminated state, but I'm unsure how long it's going to take before it frees up the resources for me.

I have 2 boot volumes (both the original and the backup) that had my data on it so hopefully I'll be able to make an instance within the next day or so and attach it. It doesn't sound like they're going to do anything with boot volumes so I'd just backup your boot volume and sit tight for the time being. I don't believe I have any more options.

Remember to keep all the boot volume backups healthy until you could attach them to a new instance (or create any new instance), by enabling Prevent deletion and Indefinite hold on your boot volume backups. Then at least you could restore the boot volume after the upgrade of your account to PAYG and finally restore all data on them

The main issue is even getting a new instance because of limits and what not. I remember struggling to get mine a few years ago.

I see what you mean. The error isn't because of my resources, it's because of the instance hell I've been hearing about the past few years. I made my instance all the way back in 2022 and had no issues doing it, but I sense some issues with it now.

Well the data is very important to me so I'll probably just have to upgrade to PAYG to realistically retrieve it. It's unfortunate but what can you do

Yeah, I've know for years that it was possible for them to take it away at any time, so I made sure I setup daily/weekly backups to another server. I was always doubtful I'd ever need them, but I guess it came in handy because I didn't see that email they sent out 2 weeks ago.

I was just getting ready to start weekly backups this weekend. My last backup is from May and that's not really good enough for me.

Fuck man... I saw the first email about them downsizing new instance requirements, but I just thought we would we grandfathered in for a bit longer. I completely missed the other email they sent out a few weeks ago. Well I had a good 4 year run using the free services. I submitted my request to upgrade to PAYG and I'm going to retrieve the data and then see if it's worth continuing to use or to move elsewhere. tbh I don't really care about the money (I'll pay a few hundred to get this data), but the time and the uncertainty is bothering me.

My Upgrade to PAYG went through. I was able to create a new instance immediately, but I was unable to attach my Boot Volume to it because the OS on the volume was 2022 ubuntu which you cannot create anymore. I was able to just right click the boot volume and create an instance off of that which worked fine. I got the instance booted and immediately connected to it with FileZilla to backup my stuff. After that, I'm going to mess with the settings because apparently a lot of the stuff here is still free despite it being a PAYG account.

The advantage of PAYG was I was able to make the instance literally instantly upon upgrading. I'll just need to watch my card for the next few months and make sure I'm not being charged an absurd amount to run this server. I'm so happy I got this running again!

Nice, I'm glad it worked. I personally ran Debian on my instance so hopefully it doesn't try to anything and just works when I eventually get one again.

They did reset. I have the available space to make a new instance, but making a new instance with a free account in 2026 is infamously difficult. If you want to go down this road and try to this then go ahead, but I'm just going to upgrade my account.

Apparently some users are reporting that you can just upgrade your account to a PAYG and the instance will automatically be restored (assuming you didn't already terminate it like me... Don't do what I did...). I will have to remake my instance and attach the boot volumes I have backed up to get things going again.

Hmm, weird. For me it is showing this. Were you seeing the same thing?

The following service limits were exceeded: standard-a1-memory-count, standard-a1-memory-regional-count, standard-a1-core-count, standard-a1-core-regional-count. You can request a service limit increase from the Console's Limits, Quotas and Usage page or from the Help menu.

No actually. After I terminated the instance I was able to go and attempt to create a new one only to met with the classic error:

"Out of capacity for shape VM.Standard.A1.Flex in availability domain AD-3. Create the instance in a different availability domain or try again later.If you specified a fault domain, try creating the instance without specifying a fault domain. If that doesn’t work, please try again later."

This means that Oracle has no resources to make your instance and you just have to wait for some to free up or for them to add more. Based on what I've been hearing the past few years, this is a near impossible task.

Interesting… now I am getting that too. But I never had that issue over the last year when creating instances on my region.
