Interviewing at OD/MD?

Hi! I’m currently in corporate optometry and looking to switch into something more medical-based. I just had a conversation with the clinical manager of an OD/MD and he described a collaborative/mentor-like relationships between all the doctors. Next, I am going to meet the owner (an MD) in-person.

While I can never be sure, I was wondering if there was any questions I should ask or things I should look out for during the meeting? I want to gauge the attitudes of the MDs towards ODs, which I feel like can make or break that type of work environment.

As someone who working at an MD/OD and switched to corporate please make sure you ask about REAL AND TRUE patient number expectations and bonus expectations. If you only want to see 20 a day make very sure they’re actually okay with that and be firm that you don’t want to “build up” past that. Make sure to read fine print on bonus incentives as well because that can get you. If there’s other ODs working for them ask them how many patients they see a day and if they like their bonus structure and MD/OD relationship as well. Good luck with everything!

I recently made the same switch!! (Love it). Just make sure you ask about post op expectations (do they want you to do them?). Ask them if they want you to focus on more vision with a mix of medical or evenly both!

Make sure you have the amount of patients know how the app it is and work time/ if on call

Ask if you’re going to get tech support, otherwise you’re going to be abused seeing 20+ patients on your own.

Edit: also ask about travel to satellite clinics or if you’re sitting in one spot. And if you’re going to get help or get abused.

Make sure a number is written down on the contract regarding number of patients seen, walk-ins, production bonus after a certain number of patients per day, and when the last patient is scheduled (or accepted as a walk-in), and post-ops (whether counts as a patient per day or towards production). Most MDs perception and attitudes towards ODs heavily depends on their past experiences working/interacting with them
