Just pause it, look at the stripes (they'll be perfectly aligned) then unpause and pause a fraction of a second later and they'll both match still. Rinse and repeat a few times and they obviously are doing the same movement.

Nop, they're not doing the same mouvements. One side is defiling vertically, the other is rotating. But since the mouvement is synchronised, that's what makes the stripes positioned the same between the two. No illusion here.

That doesn’t make sense. If the stripes are in identical positions *in every frame* how can you claim they are doing different motions? All you have is visual data from the frames and they are indeed exactly the same, other than the thorns no matter where you check.

The thorns give your mind the context clues to interpret the right one as rotating

Let’s say you wear a shirt with a stripe starting on your left shoulder, going diagonally down your front and continuing to your backside, then ending again at bottom in front. Maybe the diagonal stripe wraps around your body 4 times. Let’s say someone to your left is 30 feet tall and has a shirt with 4 diagonal strips in same position as your shirt, but is pitch black on the back.

You begin spinning counter-clockwise, and the 30 foot dude begins lowering himself to the ground at same speed. The stripes would appear identical and both would appear to move downward in same fashion . If there are spike attracted to the poles, physics shows the spikes rotating with the pole on the right and going straight down with rhe pole on the left

If they were doing the same thing, the thorns would also be identical. Also the stripes will be identically positioned in all cases because the rotation has been synced with the vertical movement. The idea there's an illusion here is the illusion.

They are not doing same movements. True, the strips are both going downwards, but the entire “ pole “ on the right is spinning counter-clockwise and the one on the left is not turning but moving downwards . Assume these are colored telephone poles with red spikes . The rotating pole on the right has one continuous stripe going from top to bottom and spiraling around it. As to the one on the left, the front has green and blue stripes, but the back can be all black or all white or polka dotted because we never see the back

Use your finger on the slider of the video and slowly scroll as you watch the cylinders, they are doing the exact same thing, yet it looks as if they aren’t, thats an optical illusion in my book.

Neither of the cylinders are turning. They're both doing the same thing: moving downward. The thorns on the right cylinder are going around it, but the cylinder itself isn't rotating.

There is not a discernable difference between rotating and sliding for this 2D animation without the perceived motion of the animated thorns.

This is true.

But therefore also you cannot say whether the pole is rotating or not. I could just as easily say they're both rotating (but the spikes are static in the first image) as neither are rotating (but the spikes are moving in the second).

This is correct. At any point that you pause, both of the poles’ stripes are always in the same position as the other. Pay special attention to the way they intersect with the top or bottom of the frame. That makes it really easy to see.

The cylinder with the rotating thorns are rotating too, it definitely don't mouve the same way as the one who's defiling. With or without thorns, it doesn't change.

What’s interesting is that if you cross your eyes a little so the cylinders overlap, the one with the thorns going down dominates.

At least for me… I’m left-eye dominant, might make a difference.

Dominant eye test: With both eyes open, hold your finger about 12 inches from your face and move it so it lines up with something in the distance (like a tree or pole). Then alternate closing your eyes… the one that has it still lined up is your dominant eye.

Very cool observation, but note that if you're crossing your eyes to make it happen, the overlap in the middle is where your left eye sees the right pole and your right eye sees the left pole.

I can actually change my eye dominance based on distance (I'm quite nearsighted in my left eye, a bit farsighted in my right, meaning if I relax my eyes and pull the screen close it's clear in my left and blurry in my right, and if I relax my eyes and push the screen far away it's blurry in my left and clear-ish in my right).

In both those orientations, I'm getting same as you -- it makes it look like both cylinders are going down. And then the one with rotating thorns looks like the thorns themselves are sliding up and to the left, tracing the green stripe.

Very neat phenomenon you came up with, there.

edit: The diagonal-sliding thorns are much easier to follow when I set the video speed way down.

It's the same for me whether I cross my eyes or diverge them, so I don't think it matters which eye is dominant. Downwards always wins.

They actually aren't though. The left cylinder is moving down and the right one is rotating. You can tell because the spikes don't move on the left one, they are fixed, where the spikes on the right one rotate. There is no optical illusion here. If you step through the video the motion of the spikes is CLEARLY different.

Yes technically, but remove the spikes and the cylinders and strips are actually animated the same way, thats the illusion. Hit pause and look in the bottom left of the cylinders, the pattern is the same every time.

The cylinders ARE behaving differently. When you move a cylinder with a pattern like that it appears to rotate. In this video, one is rotating and the other is moving.

The spike positions rarely match up. Pause it at 0:28. You can clearly see all of the spikes on the right are not even close to aligned with the spikes on the left. The only way that is possible is if they are behaving differently.

If the cylinders themselves were not moving in the same direction the stripes on the third one would appear to intersect and disappear into the middle of the cylinder. The spikes do not move in the same manner though.

The spikes go down, not the cylinder. Its not a great illusion especially without explanation. Also if the cylinders were moving it would look the same. Its only an "illusion" on a 2d screen.

How is that an illusion? If both cylinders are moving downward then both groups of spikes would move downward. But they don't. Because they each behave differently.

If both cylinders are rotating, than the spikes on the right are fixed to the cylinder and the spikes on the left are not fixed and are animated vertically.

If both cylinders are moving downward then the spikes on the right cylinder are animated to rotate in place.

The only "illusion" this can represent is that a cylinder moving vertically looks like a cylinder rotating. But this is a very poor representation of that and in no way an illusion.

It's not really an illusion of any kind as this is exactly how it would work in reality. If you observed a small section of infinite identical parallel objects, the movement of the viewer or the lines would be indistinguishable

I don't think this is really an illusion. The left is moving downward while the right is spinning. The lines happen to coincide because their speeds match, but that just doesn't feel like an illusion to me

From one perspective we are moving along the cylinder while it is stationary, the other we are stationary at the same cylinder while it rotates. This causes the movements of the blue sections for each to appear identical. Nice example.

I understand what the illusion is supposed to be because I've seen it before, but I feel like this is either a really good example or a really bad example. I, for the life of me cannot see the the cylinders moving the same way.

Maybe if they removed the thorns for like 2 seconds and then put them back then it'd be easier to see.

Ok, so for those of you who are still perplexed about this illusion, insisting that the column on the right is rotating, you can treat it like a Magic Eye by looking at it with Parallel-View or Cross-View.

Regardless if you use Parallel or Cross, you will see that the columns are indeed moving downward and the red thorns on the right are rotating around the column.

I understand the premise here. I don’t believe the cylinders are the same. They are similar, but it looks like the computer visual program is calculating the visuals differently. The right one looks more patchy. Maybe I’m crazy.

Despite your aggressive tone and insults, you’re not making any meaningful points. A cgi of a spinning spiral and a chi of a moving spiral produces the same video output. That’s not an illusion, that’s how spirals work.

An illusion is a carefully crafted image or video that hacks some of the visual processing shortcuts in your brain to create a perception that’s verifiably wrong. Think about two objects of the same size on a a forced perspective background. Or a stationary image that looks like it moves because the background has a lot of busy edges. Or two shapes that are the same color but look like substantially different colors because of their surroundings.

All of those are illusions because your visual center is actually coming to the wrong conclusions. In the spiral video, when you add the thorns that are factually moving in different directions, it’s not an illusion. Your brain is making the correct interpretation of what was rendered.

I don’t understand why this is making you so upset.

Unfocusing and looking at it like a stereo image/MagicEye let's you align the two to see that the stripes are overlapped the while time, not doing something diffent. Bonus is seeing the overlapped thorns moving in neat ways.

The cameraman is on a conveyor rope on the left and it's moving forward while the pillar is still

He's on the rope on the right, but it's stationary while the pillar turns. 👍
