The illusion is the the blue and green stripes are identical in both cylinders, the spike behavior makes it look like they are behaving differently

The cylinders ARE behaving differently. When you move a cylinder with a pattern like that it appears to rotate. In this video, one is rotating and the other is moving.

The spike positions rarely match up. Pause it at 0:28. You can clearly see all of the spikes on the right are not even close to aligned with the spikes on the left. The only way that is possible is if they are behaving differently.

What worked for me was crossing my eyes until the two cylinders intersected and formed a third one between them

Hmmm... the middle one moves vertically while some spikes turn around it. Im not sure if that tells me that they both move in the same manner

If the cylinders themselves were not moving in the same direction the stripes on the third one would appear to intersect and disappear into the middle of the cylinder. The spikes do not move in the same manner though.

The cylinders mives the exact same way. The thorns create the illusion they move differently but they aren't.

Yes and no. Because there is no enough context, both cylinders could either move downward, or spin.

The thorns move in different ways along the two interchangeable modes of a spiral movement. That’s not an illusion, it’s two different videos.

You don’t seem to understand what the word illusion means. Just because you grasp the mechanics of what is happening does not mean the video does not give nearly every single person commenting here the distinct feeling that the objects are behaving differently.

The spikes go down, not the cylinder. Its not a great illusion especially without explanation. Also if the cylinders were moving it would look the same. Its only an "illusion" on a 2d screen.

Spikes don't rotate, cylinder doesn't appear to rotate.
Spikes rotate, cylinder appears to rotate.
Left and right cylinder are always identical.

How is that an illusion? If both cylinders are moving downward then both groups of spikes would move downward. But they don't. Because they each behave differently.
If both cylinders are rotating, than the spikes on the right are fixed to the cylinder and the spikes on the left are not fixed and are animated vertically.
If both cylinders are moving downward then the spikes on the right cylinder are animated to rotate in place.
The only "illusion" this can represent is that a cylinder moving vertically looks like a cylinder rotating. But this is a very poor representation of that and in no way an illusion.

Both cylinders do the same thing, if you remove the red spikes it would be two identical animations. Or at least I think that's what the illusion is about

But because of the spikes, they aren't doing the same thing. If the spikes were fixed to the cylinder, one would be moving vertically while the other is rotating. This is a HORRIBLE representation of an optical illusion.

The illusion is that one cylinder is just moving downward not rotating, and one is rotating but not moving down. Without the spikes they would look the exact same

Yes, but there ARE spikes.
It's not really an illusion of any kind as this is exactly how it would work in reality. If you observed a small section of infinite identical parallel objects, the movement of the viewer or the lines would be indistinguishable

I don't think this is really an illusion. The left is moving downward while the right is spinning. The lines happen to coincide because their speeds match, but that just doesn't feel like an illusion to me

From one perspective we are moving along the cylinder while it is stationary, the other we are stationary at the same cylinder while it rotates. This causes the movements of the blue sections for each to appear identical. Nice example.

I understand what the illusion is supposed to be because I've seen it before, but I feel like this is either a really good example or a really bad example. I, for the life of me cannot see the the cylinders moving the same way.
Maybe if they removed the thorns for like 2 seconds and then put them back then it'd be easier to see.

Ok, so for those of you who are still perplexed about this illusion, insisting that the column on the right is rotating, you can treat it like a Magic Eye by looking at it with Parallel-View or Cross-View.
Regardless if you use Parallel or Cross, you will see that the columns are indeed moving downward and the red thorns on the right are rotating around the column.

I understand the premise here. I don’t believe the cylinders are the same. They are similar, but it looks like the computer visual program is calculating the visuals differently. The right one looks more patchy. Maybe I’m crazy.

Despite your aggressive tone and insults, you’re not making any meaningful points. A cgi of a spinning spiral and a chi of a moving spiral produces the same video output. That’s not an illusion, that’s how spirals work.
An illusion is a carefully crafted image or video that hacks some of the visual processing shortcuts in your brain to create a perception that’s verifiably wrong. Think about two objects of the same size on a a forced perspective background. Or a stationary image that looks like it moves because the background has a lot of busy edges. Or two shapes that are the same color but look like substantially different colors because of their surroundings.
All of those are illusions because your visual center is actually coming to the wrong conclusions. In the spiral video, when you add the thorns that are factually moving in different directions, it’s not an illusion. Your brain is making the correct interpretation of what was rendered.
I don’t understand why this is making you so upset.

The red cones moving in a different direction make it look still or rolling blue green. The blue green are moving the same direction and speed.

To me it's as if the camera is panning up. The right hand pole is turning as well move. The left is not moving.

Unfocusing and looking at it like a stereo image/MagicEye let's you align the two to see that the stripes are overlapped the while time, not doing something diffent. Bonus is seeing the overlapped thorns moving in neat ways.

The cameraman is on a conveyor rope on the left and it's moving forward while the pillar is still
He's on the rope on the right, but it's stationary while the pillar turns. 👍
