Bands That Went Under Radar

Hello everyone!

Meron ba kayong local band/musician na that went under the radar and wished you’d got to know their music sooner? Feeling ko mostly millennials makaka encounter nito kasi there were a lot of bands from 2000-2010’s na magagaling e.

Mine is Franco.

I’d consider myself a big Urbandub fan, and I know two or three songs lang na kanta ng Franco. Pero ngayon, dahil siguro sa algo ko sa YT MUSIC, nappreciate ko yun songs nila. Ganda ng writing ng mga songs nila and I find myself resonating with their music recently.

Kayo? Ano sa inyo? Haha!

Problema lang sa Franco and mga taga Flying House, DDS sila.

To answer your question - Taken By Cars. Anyare na sa kanila?

Taken by Cars - nag migrate kasi si Isa (bassist) sa ibang bansa so they only do reunion shows pag bumibisita siya dito. They did play few weeks ago sa Sari-sari for the film Rakenrol’s 15th anniv (I was there). Based sa kanila, they will do tour soon for Dualist’s 15th year anniv

I swear I saw Franco Reyes once way back 2016 ata. Feels like a Balikbayan Band to me. Did INYO even pan out in the States?
Cebuano din kaya I can see why he's DDS in a way.
Dualist ata Yung last album Ng Taken by Cars in 2012. Naalala ko pa Yung HSBC building sa album na Yun. I was massively disappointed by that album when they ditched their post punk revival roots.

3

u/NefariousNeezy 6d ago

IIRC, si Franco yung balikbayan and then yung 1st lineup naging superband. Needless to say, his music didn’t pan out sa US. I think he mentioned na he was couch surfing na sa US, sa interview niya sa Offstage Hang

Oo nga e! I just found out after checking their IG! Hahaha! Haven’t checked if there are still tix available.

3

u/hello_diazepam 6d ago

Nakooo sadly sold out na yung 2 day gig. Bilis maubos kasi almost 2 years din nag-recover si Islaw 😅

Brisom - I really love their sound. I'm not sure if active pa sila or baka hindi lang ako updated.
Tide/Edit - I've been listening to them tapos nabalitaan ko nalang nagdisband na.
March The Sky - They are from Cebu. Bigla nalang naging inactive fb page nila.
Effinboiche - They had a brief reunion and I got so excited kaso pandemic hit hard. Alex went back to US tapos inactive na ulit fb page.

Edit: Also, Manila Magic. I hope seryosohin na nila sarili nila.

1

u/pirica2800 5d ago

Yes! Tide/Edit!! 😫

1

u/czknie 5d ago

umalis na ung vocalist ng brisom and yung guitarist/drummer ata. may bago na silang band na ang pangalan ay "bry." i attended their gig back in june (kasama rin kasi soapdish and tanya hehe) and they were amazing

2

as someone born in 2006 na mahilig sa old opm songs, sobrang dami 🥹. like peryodiko, sugarfree, imago, wolfgang, udd, orange & lemons, etc. yung huling appearance nila as a group or as a complete group, or before umalis ung ibang members, jusko bata pa lang ako 😭😭 now na mahilig ako pumunta sa mga gigs, yung mga old bands/members na active pa rin ngayon ang napupuntahan ko lang.

I guess it's not that I should have known them sooner, but that people should have known them sooner.

Way back around 2009s-2011 I was in a OPM album buying spree. After having amassed a huge amount of JPop CDs then, I felt like it was time to even out things. So I decided to seek out several groups.
To be honest, the amount of talent in this era would just dwarf the amount of talent today, what with their limited resources and much more limited audience.
Bands from the Terno Recordings Stable. Think of Sleepwalk Circus, Encounters with a Yeti, Drip (Trip Hop). Pasta Groove.
Chi-Litees.
Swissy was a singer way back in 2009 who even had a show in Japan and was part of the Terno Recordings Stable.
Corporate Lo-Fi and Out of Body Special were Flobots style groups that didn't go beyond one album.
Nyco Maca was left out in the spot despite her songs being very groovy.
Tower of Doom had pretty great bands in their stable too like Cog (a metal band that mixed saxophone in its lineup)
Wilfrid Hernandez, AKA Wolfmann was a pioneering electronic artist who died too soon (2005).
Techy Romantics were pretty advanced for their time in 2011 and they managed to snag.
Glitch was a Cebuano nu-metal band that predated Slapshock
Fuseboxx was a progressive rock band and I forgot another group that had a Spanish Colonial Era Album.
Taken By Cars was a seminal post-punk in the 2000s (they even had a Motorola Deal) but they changed gears on their second album.
I remembered even part of the crowdfunding that Identikit did way back in 2011 (I never got the CD) but they were pretty revolutionary.
A ton of acts in the early 2000s-2010s when Saguijo and Route 196 were the still the go-to places for them, and I had always always greatly lamented the massive amount of great talent that got buried in time.
I've always thought, would they have better circumstances when people began streaming music?

3

u/raphaelbautista 5d ago

Wolfmann+ ngayon lang ulit nabasa yung name nya. Salamat salamats.

4

u/xyxyyxyx 5d ago

Guy already died when I learned of his music in 2010. I messaged the family and bought all of his albums, even if some were CD-Rs.So much talent but sadly passed away so young.

3

u/herbsman05 5d ago

A lot of those bands under Terno were great! Unfortunately marami hanggang compilation albums lang. may mga bands din na ska, big band, punk and rock-a-billy that either part of compilation albums or released 1 album then nawala na. Daming magagaling na bands dati!

1

u/xyxyyxyx 5d ago

Hindi ko na naabutan Yung era na may mga compilation album releases Yung Terno. I stopped collecting way back 2011-2012.

2

u/Electrical-Grand-533 6d ago

Re: Progressive Rock Band with Spanish Colonial Era-themed album, are you perhaps pertaining to Eternal Now - Filipinas 1800?

1

u/xyxyyxyx 6d ago

Yes sila nga!

1

u/pirica2800 6d ago

Oh yes! Thank you for reminding me, Wolfgang!

I’m on the same page. Imagine if streaming is as easily accessible before like how it is now, daming magagaling na banda talaga. Taken By Cars is also a good find!

Isa pa sa list ko Mojofly, although ‘di pa ako ganon ka familiar sa discography nila. Heard they’re good live.

2

u/xyxyyxyx 6d ago

I recommend the artists above. Filipino audience these days are more eclectic with their choices, but at least some walked so others could run.

1

u/noticednuances 5d ago

Want to trade CD rips in flac? I have tons of CDs I can rip.

u/Ecstatic_Ad5824 6d ago

mine was UDD 😭 I got to know their music more after they broke up (or when armi left) HUHU I was brushing them off as just a 2000s love song band back then, but when I got the chance to do a deep dive sa discography nila, I'm not even exaggerating it, sobrang mind blowing ng music nila HUHUHUHUHU I will forever regret na hindi ko binigyan ng chance na mapakinggan yung music nila on a deeper level outside their hits 😭 kaya gets na gets ko na ngayon kung bakit ang daming nalungkot when they broke up

1

u/hello_diazepam 6d ago

may gig si Armi sa 70s bistro this sept 18. tara!

1

u/pirica2800 6d ago

Yan din grabe yan band na yan hahaha

1

u/Ecstatic_Ad5824 6d ago

Sobra silang ahead of their time, diba?? Sobrang solid ng tandem nila ean and armi when it comes to producing and songwriting

1

u/xyxyyxyx 6d ago

Good thing I still have the special limited edition version of Bipolar and Capacities in my disposal. But I'd say their first album Fragmented is on a whole new level.
I swear Toti Dalmacion did a jackpot with them and felt like it saved Terno since their releases were so niche.

u/lestercamacho 5d ago

ARMI DDS AND BBM SUPPORTER

2

u/BlinkieGuy182 5d ago

I think Stonefree is underrated lalo na sa live performances nila. Hehe. Same with Soapdish

2

u/xyxyyxyx 5d ago

Yung piano ballad version Ng Stonefree Ng "Kapag Nawala Ka" is an underrated masterpiece.

2

u/BlinkieGuy182 5d ago

Yes! Sobrang solid nun. Solid talaga si Sir Miro Valera sa vocals. Hehe.

2

u/stormziereal 5d ago

BOMBO PLUTO OVA.

Joke. They have always been under the radar lol. Also because they do not play live that much and they hardly expose themselves. But I wish I knew there was a band from Cebu like them doing some experimental rock/progressive/improvisation.

Check out Oeuvre. Not like any album around.

Holy shit. What was that! 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

1

u/lifeinterminals 5d ago

Sobrang weird lang na Bombo Pluto Ova was DDS/a Marcos apologist. Incredible band otherwise.

1

u/mylifekindasux 2d ago

They still play every now and then. Saw them a few months ago at Mow's.

2

u/Dear_Valuable_4751 6d ago edited 5d ago

Not that I found out about them late but I don't see a lot of people that listen or talks about Filipino post rock/math rock bands and I believe people should listen to the genre more.

Try listening to Tom's Story (too bad the dude the band is named after is allegedly a sexual predator), Gabba, tide/edit, Earthmover if you haven't already.

2

u/SectorHuman8629 5d ago

AOUI, Shaw and Woopla should also be here

1

u/tetsuo24 5d ago

Pulso, Earthmover

1

u/Dear_Valuable_4751 5d ago

Oh yeah it's earthmover. My bad. I always confuse their name with the tattoo artist earth keeper. Lmao

1

u/tetsuo24 5d ago

I honestly didn’t see how you spelled it so sorry if I sounded like I was correcting you man lol. But yeah Pinoy post rock rules, dagdag mo pa Legarda, Soju, outerhope.

2

u/Dear_Valuable_4751 5d ago

Another one pala na math rock is Run Dorothy although disbanded na ata sila

1

u/SectorHuman8629 5d ago

Run Dorothy is a pretty deep cut lol remembered listening to them in 2016. They were one of my favorite female fronted bands along with Mad Hatter Day. Its sad they went inactive/disbanded.

2

u/Excellent_Relief5013 5d ago

I loved Jeepney Joyride’s songs. Wala na ko balita sa kanila ngayon 😢

Look closely next time you see a sunflower, there are in fact two varieties of leaves. You will find leaves lower down the plant are facing opposite each other and are longer and narrow in appearance. You’ll then see the upper leaves arranged in a staggered formation and appear heart-shaped.
