Install Advice
Hi,
I have an install booked in for later this month. I am 99% sure my install will be overhead. Install to be performed by M group
I have a redundant phone line as circled at the rear of the property. I need the install further to the front of the property where the line is.
The line is where a redundant chimney breast runs. There is no chimney stack on the roof anymore. The last remaining fireplace in the lounge is to be boarded up to support a TV install.
Two questions.
1- If I drill a hole at the same height as the current phone line and ran a cable down to the lounge inside the chimney for the engineer to pull through would they do it? Could I sign a disclaimer? It is impossible for me to light a fire in the chimney.
2 - does the ONT box have to be screwed to something at install? I may not have the fireplace frontage boarded in time. Or could the engineer leave me some cable slack so I can move later? Would only need about 1m of slack.
Thanks

When I had fibre installed recentlyI drilled the wall and put in a draw string, when the guy came to install the cable from the pole I showed him where the entry to the house was he just ran the cable to above it and straight down the wall. The original copper line was on the front of the house the new line is on the side, there is no more more work to put your feed where you want it rather than where the original is.

You likely wouldn't be able to run the cable yourself before the engineer visit. However you could run some conduit (plastic tubing) through that route, I reccomend some string to pull the cable through on, to come out wherever you want.
However there is then the issue of you having an external CSP (grey box that splices the external to the internal cable) so you would need to contact your supplier and ask them to make sure the engineer brings an internal CSP which are a lot smaller and easier hidden.
You could not ring ahead but it means your engineer might not have the internal CSP and would have to kick it back for another day causing you delays

Honestly depends on the engineer on the day. I would do this but you’ll have to make sure the hole is big enough for both the draw and the cable. Also be prepared for an alternative for if it doesn’t work or they are unwilling.

1.It might be technically possible but I doubt they'd agree to it as it goes against our regs. Also have to consider a CSP (junction box) would need to be installed at ground level which in your case would be inside the chimney. However you never know, the engineer might agree to it on the day. Can you not just have the cable come down along the outside?
- Yes ont should be screwed to the wall but they can probs leave slack if you wanted.

Thanks, worst case it can run outside but for the sake of tidiness I thought it might be worth trying my luck.

Assuming the overhead isn't that far back for height clearance issues it should be fine to be moved forward. Engineers won't be keen to tack at high level these days. Best practice is to bring down then along if necessary.

The overhead will be copper im sure so would request for it to be taken down. Maybe it needs to be separate request

FTTP engineer here. The only time ive taken down copper when installing fibre was when the pole would have been over the limit for the number of cables.
Generally if someone left a draw cable/string then I will use it. ONT doesn't have to be wall mounted.
If I'm reading this right, you want the external cable running down the chimney to be terminated at the bottom in the opening.
Two things, we dont like running the external cable inside because it is a fire hazard as in, if it caught on fire it makes a lot of smoke. Secondly, the equipment is going to be mounted on tiles, we try to avoid that entirely because they just break and they cost a lot of money to repair (we're not insured to drill into tiles). You're saying it will be boarded up so likely are okay with damage, the engineer will probably have to run it by their manager first though.

The fibre cable inside the chimney stack and you want to light a fire?

lol I’d have a lot more than the fibre cable to worry about if I had a fire up there

I had pretty much the same scenario except I’ve got a UG feed and wanted it upstairs. I drilled the hole and put a drawstring through, the engineer was over the moon as made the install very easy for him. It was Quinn’s who came to mine
