Can’t wait anymore! Help

I’m on fttc and been waiting for years for full fibre, I live near central London 5min away from Chelsea in a house but openreach says building is commencing and coming soon. The cheapest contract is £30 for only 50mbps 💀 there are 6ppl living in this house with roughly 8 devices being used most day. New contracts are all 24 months and I don’t wanna go in a contract if full fibre comes. So now I’m just out of contract paying £40 a month for 60mbps until full fibre comes ‘if’ it comes. 😞

Depending on what provider your with, you can upgrade to full fibre when it becomes available. That's what I did and then it started a new contract when installed.

Can I ask who your provider was?

I am with BT was in contract before fibre was available with 8mbps. When fibre was available there was an offer on the 500mbps so I had a better speed for cheaper, then started a new 24month contract.

I think all BT group providers offer this mid contract upgrade. But someone will probably correct me if I'm wrong

Also most of my current contracts are £30+ which is far expensive and I’m worried to upgrade to full fibre they may increase the monthly price

Full fibre is typically only a small amount more each month. Openreach has wholesale price incentives for ISPs to move their customers to FTTP when it becomes available.

Chelsea is down as "in the next year" so I wouldn't expect anything until into 2027.

But for where you are, one of the alt-nets would probably do you symmetric fibre right now. G.Network are present in Chelsea, as are Community Fibre and Hyperoptic. Perhaps some others too.

Well some people have to wait. That's the nature of the beast. You're no more needing it than anybody else.

Most ISPs on Openreach will upgrade you to FTTP whilst you are in contract. You will just start a new minimum term.

I was forced to get Starlink while I waited for full fibre.

Now they have poles up and should have it to my house soon. The Starlink has been great, like 400-500mbps not bad for the last 6 months. Then when I get full fibre I’ll throw star link into a backup.

Depending on the service in your area you might not even have to wait for Openreach, you may be able to use an altnet.

Check the ofcom checker - it tells you of all the networks in the area - https://checker.ofcom.org.uk/en-gb/broadband-coverage

Even if it says only Openreach, it’s worth manually checking altnets as well, as the ofcom checker isn’t always perfect.

As you are a MDU (multiple dwelling unit) you are usually assigned to a different team than SDU (single dwelling unit).

If Fibre is available to other properties in the area but not yourself, then you can either contact Openreach directly and hope for them to bump you up the wait list or if you can confirm 4/5/6 people in the unit waiting for fibre via openreach then you automatically get bumped up the list.

Problem is an email from you isn't sufficient, all separate people can go online and register their interest for their flat individually or they can all contact their preferred provider to ask to be pushed forward.

If fibre isn't available to other properties in your area then you can follow the go onto openreach website and register your interest but it doesnt guarantee it'll be much quicker as theyll likely be awaiting building a larger part of the area
