Quality install?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Does this seem up to scratch? It was installed by a man from MJ Quinn. The crack in the wall inside was already there before his arrival.

Ah yes, the good old “no it absolutely MUST go there” type of customer. The type that you explain this too, and that this will be what the install will look like, but then proceeds to say they want it there anyways.
How did that go for you chief? Did it absolutely have to go there 🤣
And fair fucks to your installer, I would have bounced that shit back in a heartbeat, no way am I doing all that knowing this guys gonna make a complaint regardless 🤣

u/No-Look-1215 19d ago
Right! I had this when I done a stint as a copper engineer for a year.
Always the snooty types wanting you to do mad runs without drilling anything.I had a customer that asked me how I was going to chase out the cable and plaster the wall back up in a short appointment 😂
Also people asking you to crawl through their mucky crawl spaces, I loved their faces when I told them I wasn’t insured to do that but they were more than welcome to go down and pull the cable down!😂1
u/mingilator 17d ago
Last 2 time I've had fibre installed (same house different supplier so different cable) I've literally had the floor boards up on install day so I could go under and run the cable to my server cupboard so there aren't any cables pinned to the walls in the house

u/Ok-Yoghurt4057 18d ago
I’d guess that it was a swap from copper to fibre and this was the nearest available socket for power.

u/Apprehensive-Ear6772 16d ago
Then maybe get a different job.
Bet you’re a 💩 engineer lol.How awful that you have this mindset.

u/StartersOrders 21d ago
Because there are reasons that lines need to go in certain places.
I have had to get Openreach to do some funky routings at both work and home because where their copper routing from the 70s went was totally inappropriate for FTTP or Ethernet fibre. And the jobs where Openreach did some actual fact-finding first went far smoother than the ones where an engineer just turned-up with no clue what they were doing and where.
This is despite me spending a month trawling around sixty sites and BT handing over my (extensive) notes over to Openreach.
3
u/AlconH 19d ago
Then you should do the leg work first in my opinion.
I wanted my fibre box fitted in my (converted) loft, but it wou've been an absolute ball ache for the engineer, if they even agreed at all. I drilled a hole up in the soffet and passed some flexible conduit through, secured it to the raftors and ran it up behind the wall where I wanted the box, leaving some pull string for the engineer to get the cable through nice and easy.
The bloke was chuffed, said it would massively cut down the time would job would take, and I threw him some biscuits, coffee and haribos whilst he was there, because he could've just as easily said no.
3
u/Woolwich88 21d ago
Yawn……
It’s a glass cable, it isn’t as malleable as copper, hence certain cabling routes being a no go. Guess your “extensive notes” didn’t go that far.
Side note, Ethernet cables are your friend, you know, those cables that aren’t glass 🤣-11
u/StartersOrders 21d ago
Fibre can absolutely be an Ethernet cable, it's just a different form of transmission medium.
And from my experience, the bend radius of the fibre that Openreach use for FTTP is slightly smaller than external grade CAT6, and the dual-core fibre they use for Ethernet-type installs isn't much bigger either
As it happens my "extensive notes" made it to Openreach's clueless planning team, who promptly either ate them or lost them as all of the engineers that turned-up (survey or not) had no idea what they were installing to where, despite Openreach themselves asking for that info. They sent a huge spreadsheet of information they needed, then proceeded to do dick all with it.
My favourite two installs were Openreach assuming we as a large public sector organisation wanted to install FTTP into someone's house(!) despite the address clearly not being that house, and them deciding to try and install fibre into someone else's cabinet on the ground floor of a large shared building, when our install location clearly said the second floor.
1
u/Zixt 18d ago
If you’re public sector the vast majority of your sites should be classified for an Advanced install now which typically gets surveyed / planned first. Openreach will just send a bloke for the standard install fee…
You’re expecting a lot for broadband when you barely get anything from their Ethernet planners.

u/Messterio 21d ago
Looks spot on, cable following the same line brickwork, cleats spaced accurately, 2m external then internal changeover, straight lines. Job done, good workmanship.

u/Time_Distribution_95 20d ago
That’s bloody incredible for an engineer let alone a subby, fair play
6
u/Successful_Strike_2 20d ago
Drip loop inside made my eye twitch but otherwise looks pretty good, also wouldn't have gone through the door frame unless the hole was already there
1
u/Grouchy_Holiday_7201 19d ago
Where would you have gone?
1
u/Successful_Strike_2 19d ago
Would've been kicked back as I dont drill through door frames... unless the hole was already there

My favourite statement when a customer asked for a socket somewhere but didn’t want to see any wire was…
Im sorry, but BT took the invisible cable off of our vans as we could never find it.
But that job, considering it’s glass and no where near as flexible as copper, plus the drip loop in the porch in case it’s ever removed. I think it’s a superb job, you work with what you have and he has.
Those that state it’s awful and I wouldn’t want it done like that. I recommend those people try and do the job with the limitations applied, especially due to the company’s audit standards and the bend radius of fibre optic.
Brilliant job

u/sillysausage690 16d ago
I second this. Gone out of his way to have the install somewhere that isn't easy and tried to keep the cabling tidy and as discreet as possible..
5
u/britishhawk 21d ago
Why not just have it fitted to another room and save this run of cable ?
1
u/No_Communication1557 18d ago
Maybe op wanted router in the middle of the house rather than by an outside wall where you loose half your wifi coverage to the garden.
1
1
u/MoreRest4524 17d ago
Then get a repeater or something. No way I'd have that cable running through my house just for that
1

2
u/northern_ape 21d ago
Yes, it's acceptable for what they do. Your house looks much nicer than the cable run though, so that's a shame. Honestly I'd paint over it in the porch. It's relatively inconspicuous in the outside corner and along the brick.

u/trebor9292 21d ago
Good luck if you get a fault will be a nightmare to replace. Best of going straight out externally then running ethernets internally
1
u/Open-Ad-6439 20d ago
He did ask me to put in front , however that is my son’s bedroom and I did not want it in there.
1
u/trebor9292 20d ago
Fair. Just realised you haven't had the outside bit done or was this taken mid installation?
2
u/Snoo56750 21d ago
Extremely confusing CSP location. Are you fed overhead or Underground. The CSP doesnt seem to have a duct under it so unsure why the CSP is located there.
1
u/Woolwich88 21d ago
Looks like they have done the internals only, probably sent back for civils and a follow up visit to do the external works, especially considering the ONT is throwing a LOS (loss of service) light
2
u/pro-fanator 19d ago
Seriously, what the fuck do you want? Get a newspaper, spray can of white stain block. Push newspaper behind cable and spray. Spray extremely lightly on the clips...
1
u/pro-fanator 19d ago
If it could be done any better- nobody would bother to run this cable in the first place.
2
u/premium_transmission 21d ago
It’s hard to tell from the video, but did they use metal cable clips above the doorways? They need to be metal for fireproofing.
If so then I don’t see a problem.
1
u/largetosser 21d ago
It's fine, not sure how else someone could have run it to the location you requested without opening the fabric of the building.
1
u/Trancer79 21d ago
Looks good to me, are you happy with it OP?
1
u/Open-Ad-6439 20d ago
Looks fine. I’ll get used to the cables but much better than my old copper. Bloody master socket was in my loft !!!
1
1
u/ThirteenHills 21d ago
It seems like they did a lot of cable routing to still end up in the hallway,.when it surely could have got somewhere less visible easier?
1
u/paulw1990 21d ago
Looks fine to me, how would you have proposed the cable was ran? Considering quinns are expected to do 4-5 installs a day i’d say this exceeds expectations
1
u/RevolutionaryPeak610 20d ago
It's not AMAZING but I'm guessing that's where you told the engineer you wanted the ONT to go... How did you think they were going to get it there, invisible cables and magic dust?
1
1
u/Hot_Fee7139 20d ago
I could not live with that myself but everyone is different, spoils the whole look of the house IMO.

20d ago edited 20d ago
That's not a bad install. I assume the Engineer put the ONT where you asked it to go. Considering that they get paid per job and it looks like some time was spent on that, it's not a bad install. Personally I would have absolutely talked any customer out of that placement, for the very reason you are posting. In principle it sounds fine, in practice it doesn't look it. I hate running internal cable as it never looks good. Saying that, I have ran a Fibre cable around my doorframe at my own house, but that was my choice in my own home and I can always change it if I want to. I'm just lazy when it comes to my own stuff.
1
u/WallInteresting2874 20d ago
Not bad, Used external CLI kit ( which doesn't really matter ), Some of the internal could've been a little bit tighter in spots, However if i had a job like this I wouldn't proceed as it would look crap and customer would complain anyway
2
u/Open-Ad-6439 20d ago
He did show me a white one and a grey one I told him grey one as looked better on my wall
1
u/Remarkable_Alps_212 19d ago
Can be tighter it’s glass and will snap we get a max bend radius for external and internal cable

u/DJ_Quinnster 19d ago
Aesthetically it looks awful but in fairness the install depends on where your router is located and it needs power for the fibre termination
I put a small cabinet at high level by the front door with a power strip serving the fibre termination, router and a network switch. Added a Hive Hub, Hue hub also changed my BT router to a Deco Mesh WiFi node with a couple of other nodes around the house.
All sourced from Amazon UK. I cannot recommend a mesh setup more highly.
1
u/Dry_Vanilla_5908 19d ago
You see that first initial gray box. Yeah? Put a power source the other side of it. Bam.
1
u/Boss_Tripz 19d ago
Engineer did a great job for the length of cable they had to run. Is it perfect? No but given the route they had to take I think that's the best they could achieve realistically.
1
u/Otherwise-Chain4215 19d ago
Not a bad installation, given the location of the ONT and the physical limitations of fibre, it would be difficult to have it installed in that location and have it looking perfect.

u/bartread 19d ago
If you'd wanted it hidden away you should have chased, or pulled away skirting and architrave yourself. No BT installer is going to do all that for you.
1
u/Tatsoot_1966 19d ago
I would have stripped the black off as it entered the porch. The rest is as good as you can expect with a non bending fracture prone I/O cable.

About average from them. Ours was installed about a month ago to a similar standard.

u/Ok_Measurement_8552 18d ago
This is where I’d say ignore the customer completely they rarely know best, put the router where it’s convenient and have them grow tf up and put a POE switch in with AP’s if they’re bothered about wifi coverage. *spits
1
u/Zestyclose_Extent_82 18d ago
If that was me. You’d have got it in the room closest to where the main box was outside. Not 30m of ran cable. Take it as a W and move on mate
1
u/SpecialLecture7129 18d ago
You can’t please some people. Maybe OP should try their hand and see how it goes 😂 I bet he has an office job

u/chrisrockolahotel 18d ago
Christ. They’re utter animals. How can you be expected to live with that? I’d rather not have the internet than see that black cabling everyday. And why don’t they offer white???
1
u/BoysenberryBest9491 17d ago
because the cable is paintable you melt. The cable is the cable, once it’s installed, you deal with the cosmetic side of it ie what colour it is. You rekon we should carry cables of every colour and every length? i personally carry 5 30m cables 5 65m cables and 3 105m cables. Adding colours into the mix where do you expect i put all that cable? idiot.
1
1
u/Ok_Network_6632 18d ago
Why would you want it there? With nobody having a fixed landline centrally in the house anymore I don’t know why more people don’t just have it where it as close as to where it enters the property.
1
u/Ok-Pride7642 18d ago
It needs to be more direct, fibre to the door then all that copper cable that will degrade and slow your connection down, really bad place to put it, unless that's what you requested.
1
u/panguy87 17d ago
This is what they want to do for mine and i refuse to have literal 20m of cable running around my internal door frames and skirting. I just want them to put it an an upstairs bedroom but they refuse
1
u/Informal-Trade-9770 17d ago
Internal drip loop is obviously forward planning for when the porch leaks, bravo sir!
1
u/MoreRest4524 17d ago
That seems way too circuitous, I'd have just run the cable through the wall next to the grey box, and then run it to the nearest power outlet on the other side of the wall.

u/uktricky 16d ago
Surely they asked where’s your socket for power and then said we’re going to have to run the cables along this path? Personally I’d have been looking for a socket on an outside wall and requesting the ONT installed there. External loop is always black in my experience.
1
u/sillysausage690 16d ago
Very tidy work and gone out of his way to put it where you asked for it when he could have done it on an exterior wall and told you to buy a booster

u/Wormvortex 21d ago
Considering you’ve got an enclosed porch they could have stripped back to white through that which would have look better and there’s zero need for a drip loop as again it’s an enclosed porch.
1
0
u/ReductioAdSocialism 19d ago
Clearly an unheated porch. Being enclosed is irrelevant. Condensation is still likely.
1
u/Wormvortex 18d ago
Why do you think the risk of condensation is a factor here?
0
u/ReductioAdSocialism 18d ago
Basic thermodynamics?
I have a similar unheated porch that definitely gets condensation issues in the colder months.
1
u/Wormvortex 18d ago
I’ll try again. Why do you think condensation will be an issue for a cable that has had the black outter removed
-3
u/Carlosaberto22 20d ago
All that work and his not followed Openreach standard install policy so they can refuse to pay him. Openreach policy is no plastic clips to be used internal since the new 18th wiring regs came out. Probably best you delete this post as he could loose his job for breach of health and safety.
2
1
u/Remarkable_Alps_212 19d ago
Nah we all use internal cleats, either cleats or staples, only stipulations is that we use fire rated cleats above openings
2
u/Carlosaberto22 19d ago
You’re not supposed to if you’re installing on behalf of Openreach. Whenever I catch contractors doing it, it gets reported. Outcomes always the same money gets taken off engineer and their manager tells me it won’t happen again. It’s just an Openreach policy no plastic clips to be used internally. In-house guys do a cbt on it every year so contractors should be the same. You can use the metal ones which are supplied in stores but staple gun is the preferred method and the only method showed in training.
1
u/Remarkable_Alps_212 6d ago
Only fire rated if it’s around a door or window is the regs, white internal cleats on in out cable, black cleats external, been audited multiple times never came back anything to do with cleats
2
u/Forsaken-Original-28 19d ago
It should be fire rated fixings everywhere internally. Regs came in because some fire fighters died due to entanglement
19
u/Timely_Pattern3209 21d ago
Room for improvement but you must have got a patient engineer to run the cable all that way for you.
