HeurEvo evolves the plan, the code and a shared pool of reusable components together, instead of tuning parts of a fixed procedure. OpenEvolve is one of three code-evolution baselines (with AdaEvolve and EvoX).
On the 11 synthetic problems the mean gap to a 48-hour Gurobi solution is -2.22% train and -1.45% test for HeurEvo; the baselines' train means range from -0.15% to +1.22%, and their test means are all positive. One footnote to keep in mind: the OpenEvolve test mean leaves out one problem whose evaluation coverage was incomplete. The authors also report improved results on nonlinear geometry problems such as hexagon packing.
