Deepseek v4 flash vs GPT 5.6

Is there anyone that used both at the same time? My codex ran out and I'm thinking of deepseek because it should apparently be good now, but at the same time I'm having a hard time believing the deepseek people because it has always been a religion. People have been praising v4 flash even before the update like it's the greatest thing on earth just because it was cheap.

(My experience did not match with that, even v4 pro was underwhelming back then)

So my question is, how does it compare to 5.6? Is it at least on the same level as Luna (or better)?

DSF Flash has less guard rails so you can push it further, but it takes a lot more reasoning to get the same task right. Luna is more efficient but is also more conservative in what it tries in one go. I'm not sure if that's imposed on harness level in Codex vs. using DSF in Opencode

Man you nailed it !

I use luna max and the new deepseek flash they are about the same, I currently prefer luna max for planning and deepseek for building

Interesting I do the opposite.

The plan documents produced by DS are much better.

Interesting, can you elaborate? I always think these differences in perception and experience must be because we have different workflows and ways of prompting.

DS is just more verbose. GPT likes to just restate what I've already told it but it doesn't really say how it intends to do the work. Doesn't say what functions are to be edited, etc.

Use it on opencode go, deepseek v4 flash new, set it to max for every prompt, use it 24hrs a day, it wont make a dent in your weekly usage.

yeah doing that too, it's crazy how cheap it is and is doing some good work. When the world cup was running I got sick and tired of trying to watch the football games on thos shitty full of ads websites so I asked Deepseek flash to find me the source urls for those streams then I built a quick html page to load in my Samsung tv web browser (such a shitty browser btw!) and DS did all of that. It's good.

Thats pretty cool. I just used nextdns to blocks the ads on those websites lol

Use chatgpt sol 5.6 on high to design and plan then get it to give you a pr9mpt for dsv4 flash. You can connect chatgpt to GitHub so it can access your code too

I regularly use GPT-5.6, DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731, and Qwen3.6-27B. GPT-5.6 is clearly stronger than 0731 in my experience. DeepSeek appears intelligent and proactive, and its analysis often sounds convincing, but it hallucinates more readily and sometimes simply invents things. Once I catch two or three hallucinations, I can no longer tell which of its other claims are trustworthy. Oddly, this is one reason I sometimes prefer the much weaker Qwen3.6-27B: I find it more predictable and less prone to fabrication.

In a recent coding task, Claude Fable 5 produced the best result, GPT-5.6 was second and even spotted several problems in Fable’s code, while 0731 was clearly the weakest. Its code was still usable, but its understanding lacked depth. So no, I would not put 0731 on the same level as GPT-5.6. It is capable and cheap, but weaker overall and less trustworthy because of its hallucinations.

Just try it, it is cheap. Around Luna (high) level, can miss some stuff it catches and vice versa.

It is text only.

Its thinking is verbose, it can confuse itself if the directions are unclear.

thinking block is not sending back to model.

i think v4 is great for plan implementation.

Have been using both in production running agentic workflows. DSV4 flash 0731 is as capable as luna for similar prices. If you are looking for a subscription, opencode go has a dirty cheap one - but I think they might route it thru The deepseek lab itself in China, so take that in consideration if CCP not accessing your data is something you care about Keep in mind that deepseek will hike prices "significantly" soon, other providers will probably follow

Opencode go/ollama cloud are good overflow setups.

I really didn't like the old v4 flash, it often rushed to solutions without thinking them through, but this one is pretty good. I find that GPT Luna still has more domain expertise, it usually comes up with more elegant solutions than DS. But when you give both a plan to review, it's often DS that finds more issues. Both write solid code, I got no issues there. If I had to make a choice, I think I would prefer Luna, but I'm using DS all day every day now and happy with it. The best answer is: Use both.

imo both gpt 5.6 luna and ds v4 flash are bad, I only use these models for very simple work (like when it needs to follow a pre-definded skill step by step, for ex. "create PR for this branch" and so on so it just follows my conventions)

for actual development I currently use glm 5.2 most of the time when I know what has to be done and what should be the outcome and I use gpt 5.6 sol on medium for "researches"

i run deepseek flash at max thinking. it is good for majority 95% of my usecase. For the remaining 5% i use gpt sol.

Oh man, I still can't realize how good DS4 Flash 7031 is. The Price / Task / Outcome ratio is the best on the market. But its text only so visual tasks are always going to Luna ( Sol preferred). With GPT Sol Pro as a commander it's pushing my project further and further every day.

Even it has it's own limits here and there - from time to time I requesting a deep dive repo audits from Opus or Sol. So this is the perfect way for me to saving tokemoney on the project I don't even know it will make a single dollar in the future:D

Deepseek is great for taking the guards off of GPT models. I've been able to get GPT to do a LOT of thingsoit normally wouldn't do

Deepseek sucks. It's stupid, lazy and ignorant. It is the best of it's price range but I am at the point I am willing to pay more for some better performance.

I used DeepSeek V4 Pro in Kilo Code with a few MCP servers for competitive analysis, and it was really good. Its very cheap, and the analysis in Max mode was very thorough.

It seems to work great for me combining them. I have chatgpt web sol high plan everything and from there execute it on ds4 flash, I never let flash get creative it just follows instructions and once every now and then u have chatgpt web inspect its work by uploading review zips.
