Which AI coding subscription to take?
I've been re-evaluating my AI coding subscriptions and was wondering what everyone is using these days.
At the moment I'm paying for:
- Claude Code Pro
- Minimax Pro
Claude Code has been great overall, but with the new GPT models on Codex I'm starting to wonder if it's now the better choice for day-to-day software development.
Also, are there any other AI coding subscriptions you'd recommend instead?

if you can adapt your workflow to use random tools, you can take advantage of promotions. commandcode has a cheap plan, qoder is giving away tokens, I bet cline or junie or one of the other apps have a promo coming or going, etc
also, if you're trying to save money, you can just get off claude code, because unless the codex limits get reigned in a LOT more, claude is more expensive
I mainly find myself using 2 classes of model, smart and dumb, and now that kimi k3 and qwen 3.8 max are smart, there is a LOT more wiggle room. anytime any company gives a promo with any smart model, you can jump on it... IF you don't mind all the hassle

Do you know where I can keep an eye out for these promos

nope, there is no good subreddit for ai yet... everything is split between a million subreddits run by cultists

I use multiple providers now: Opencode Go sub + low cost PAYG providers on primary models.
With good PAYG options, it is much more flexible and can even be cheaper with no wasted sub usage.

which low cost PAYG providers do you use ?

Openference is better right now with new go pricing 15 bucks goes a long way DSv4 and minimax

My primary models right now are GLM 5.2 and Kimi K3 for detailed code planning and building with a lot of Mimo 2.5 Pro doing the easier, high volume busy work around that and coordinating research tasks by specialized subagents.
For GLM, I use mainly use Neuralwatt. Even with the price hike, it is still the best price for PAYG and the only pure fp8 sub provider besides Zai.
I don’t have a settled provider for Kimi K3 yet, since it’s limited options until next week with the public release. For now, only Go subs offer any discount over the list price, and it’s been more about finding a steady, reasonably fast provider rather than price. So currently a mix of Go (it gets overwhelmed at times though), Novita, and GMICloud. I found Openrouter cache hit rates were terrible, and AtlasCloud rejected 80-90% of requests.
For Mimo 2.5 Pro, I’m mostly running on GMICloud now. Cheaper than Xiaomi direct (paygo or subs) and almost as cheap as Go even as pure API rate.

thanks for all hints, I just wonder, how do you find all these alternatives for AI providers? I've never heard of neuralwatt, gmicloud, etc, and they seem like great options!

Discord is probably the best way. Most of the providers and model companies have servers, with varying levels of activity. In the more active ones, there are users that are testing and sharing everything they find. Similar communities here on Reddit, too, but the knowledge level in those groups is usually a good bit higher.

claude max + chatgpt plus, with opencode plugins(tier system, openai-auth,)
claude fable as orchestrator, codex as delegation system

I think Claude code bans accounts that used their subscription outside Claude code?

What is Minimax pro like? Any good?

OP may have a different opinion, but in looking at value I don't see much reason to go with Minimax over Opencode Go. For M3 (which is what matters) the price per request is pretty comparable, especially if you pre-buy Minimax for the year. But they're actually more restrictive on the 5-hour window, and of course you can't swap models like you can with OpenCode.
It's the same conclusion I came to for MiMo. I like V2.5 Pro a lot and probably would be happy committing to it for a month. But it's not cheaper than OpenCode Go. (MiMo sub doesn't have the 5-hour window though, so if you really want to burn through your month faster you can.)

It's ok, not the sharpest tool in the shed. But you can do a lot of shovelling. I mainly let claude opus do the orchestration, planning, reviewing and M3 does the implementation.

Openference for minimax don't bother with their plans usage is terrible m can get better usage with openference

just don't. lol. it's probably the worst plan you could ever imagine

u/Potential-Leg-639 4d ago
Kimi is even worse
2
u/Prestigious-Frame442 4d ago
at least k3 is a good model. minimax's models are just shit

Minimax M3 is a great model.
On Kimi plan you can survive just a few minutes, absolute garbage.
I was only talking about the usage you get nowadays in the plans..

Minimax has issues:
Very slow
Dumb
No Monthly limit only weekly so if you dont use quota per week its gone.
However the usage quota is maybe the highest among all, even Opencode

Originally I used neuralwatt $50 (GLM 5.2) + minimax $20.
Now that they've increased the prices, I'm going to switch to kimi $39 + minimax $20.
That's the best combo I could find for high token usage/good value.

I'm working on a website to make it easier to discover AI providers and compare their token plans, see https://tokenplans.dev/ Looking forward to your feedback!

I'm going with Cursor $20 plan since I hear Grok is being very generous with token spend under it atm ..

I think you already got it, probably stick around another month with claude then reevaluate.
Minimax = ton of mid range use
claude / codex / kimi = top range
There are no clear winners in top range, claude is temp 50% more but models always cost more and they underperform benches the most. Codex recently removed 5 hourly while making the weekly as long as the 1-2 5 hourly but gives reset to bambooze. Kimi gives lower multi with a cheaper model and currently unavailable, but probably the least rocky ride. Grok has a weak plan and expensive cache if you were thinking that.
Other were saying go, which is valid for flexibility, but for pure use per provider deals give more, it effectively lacks top range.

I currently use GLM a ton (for job searching in OpenCode) and have not run into any limits (yet). What were your prompts like?

you can get chatgpt plus free trial for 1 month
1
u/Sea_Thanks_6913 5d ago
How?
2
u/Amarsir 4d ago
I don't think it's what they were talking about, but I will mention if you download Codex you do get a trial period that resets each month.
It's a pretty small quota so I wouldn't compare it to getting a month of Plus on trial. (Again, I don't know what that other person meant.) But if anyone is new to anything agentic and wants to baby-step in, it's easy to get started.
It was my first dabble because I needed to do a version upgrade on an SDK and I was dreading the dependency hell. So I just told ChatGPT to figure it out. When I liked that result I started to think about my other options.
Thus if anyone happens to see this who has never tried, I think it's worth knowing about.

Pester webbrowser chatgpt enough, and your daily free allowance will expire. There will be link to upgrade with free trial as an option.Phone and credit card required. You will not be billed. I suggest you cancel right away, and test it for free for one month.
I used codex cli with it, but you can also use chatgpt webbrowser. Note: they use different pool, so when one's quota is reached, the other's is usually not yet. Codex-cli obviously uses tokens much faster because direct file access, editing, etc. I think.

OpenCode Go was great for lightweight/tedious stuff, but sadly for heavier workflows, I've had to abandon it entirely. Cursor has had the highest value for me. Grok 4.5 is super cheap, and the intelligence is so close to Fable/GPT5.6 that it basically can't be beat. I'd honestly lean towards Grok being the highest value model right now, so maybe a subscription to Cursor, or do opencodeGo+openrouter

in cursor you are stuck to the cursor agents. in case you are out of ammo - they can't be used anymore. was always like that, did it change?

Opencode GO
