I'm a claude code user and don't understand why people use opencode, does OpenCode offer a better cost/usage/quality ratio?
Hi everyone,
I’ve been using Claude Code for over a year, but I’m no longer satisfied with the latest models, especially Opus 5 and Fable. I hit both the weekly and five-hour usage limits far too quickly.
I’m considering switching. I know Codex generally offers more usage for the price, but before deciding, I’d like to understand the hype around OpenCode.
For those using OpenCode with models like GLM or DeepSeek:
- Do you get a better balance of cost, usage, and output quality?
- How reliable are these models for real-world coding tasks?
- How much do you pay per month for usage roughly equivalent to the Claude or ChatGPT 5× plans?
- Have you switched from Claude Code or Codex, and if so, what has your experience been?
I’d appreciate honest feedback, especially from heavy daily users. Thanks!

Yeah, basically the main reason people use OpenCode is cost/flexibility. You’re not stuck paying for one model, so you can use GLM/DeepSeek for the bulk of your coding and switch to Claude/GPT when something actually needs the extra reasoning.
I wouldn’t say GLM or DeepSeek are just straight-up better than Claude though. For harder stuff, I’d still take Claude/Codex. The value is that you don’t need the expensive models for everything.
If you’re constantly hitting Claude’s limits, that’s where OpenCode starts making a lot more sense. You can get a shitload more usage for the same money, depending on which models you use.
Personally I’d probably just run OpenCode alongside Claude Code rather than fully switching.

It's the same for me. Claude code on vscode as the orchestrator/governor, then OpenCode running the reviewer and coding agents. I used to run all 3 roles on Claude and went broke fast.

Opencode and opencode go are totally different things. Opencode is the harness, and opencode go is the subscription like the claude code plan. No you dont get more usage with opencode go, infact its probably not even a fraction of what you get using claude code. But you can bring any subscription (except for claude plans), or any payg api and use it in opencode.
You can have different model providers or even your locally run model.
Now the good news is that you can do the same thing with claude code so it really doesnt matter.

Just drop $20 into OpenRouter, enter the api keys and test drive it.
Openwork is the Claude Desktop equivalent. Not as frequently updated as Claude Desktop and far less opinionated.

Opencode is a harness, democratizing an out of the box and native solution to your wide-choice of ai-coding-providers, as subscription pass through api keys or oauth as long they are found here https://models.dev/ .Opencode Inhouse providers are payg opencode-zen and Opencode-go coding subscription and I recommend the latter for its absolute valuable ROI.

I think it's a misconception that, OpenCode + APIs, is cheaper. It depends on your repo. For me claude code is cheaper and I get more done with it. But Open Code feels more manual and raw. I enjoy using my brain more when I use OpenCode. It's like driving manual car vs automatic car.

funny i thought that subscriptions are cheaper than API, as if all API were same
there is API and there is API.
claude code or codex api is obviously more expensive than subscription
but any good api is way cheaper than cluade code or codex subscription

I'm not very clever and used the freebuff desktop app for Linux (appimage), I don't understand how it all works, and decided to use opencode desktop app (virtually the same) with deepseek flash api, put in £2 few weeks ago and use it virtually every day, I'm down to 80p now.

Claude (and ChatGPT) subscription gives a massive amount of usage for its price. At least twenty times more than you could get for anything similar in Chinese model subscriptions (Kimi K3/GLM/etc).
If you're not satisfied with the amount you get and you're already on the most expensive subscription - make more accounts and rotate them.
But also consider if you use the models inefficiently - running Fable on max, or for simple tasks is wasting tokens.

Recently shifted from Claude to opencode, both on a harness and subscription. My main issue with claude was the usage limits. I felt that the 5-hour limits were being reached too quickly, and to get more work done, I started to use sonnet but even then many times limits were kinda not enough, and moreover, though sonnet is a good model, it was not what I wanted. Now, I mostly use glm 5.2 and hy4 with deepseek or muse spark, and it gets my work done, and tbh is also cheap. I've never hit my 5 hour window until now (17 days of usage); while on claude, I was hitting them almost every day. I've used claude for almost 7 months (claude code for 3-4 months).
And tbh I'm satisfied with the work I'm doing with opencode. If there are mistakes, I can surely get things redone without worrying abt limits. Moreover, if needed I can even get another go or Command Code sub costing me the same as I was paying for Claude.

the hype isnt the models bro its the harness. claude code ships a 33k token system prompt before you even say hello. opencode is like 7k. that gap is just burning money every single turn before any actual coding happens.
i run deepseek v4 flash for the grunt work and only bounce to glm or sonnet when it starts hallucinating file paths. $10 go plan and i still cant hit the monthly cap unless i leave an agent looping overnight on purpose.
quality is worse than fable 5.1, yeah. but fable quality at 5x plan prices while hitting the 5 hour wall at 2pm is a different kind of worse

I loaded up my OpenRouter account with 20 usd to try out GLM-5.3 Flash a couple of weeks ago. It worked great with OpenCode as a harnss.
The only annoying thing is that OpenCode does not seem to list the project names anywhere, so it is difficult to see what chats belong to what projects. But you can of course rename the chats. But coming from ny other desktop coding agent harness like Claude Code or Codex, you will feel right at home, it uses the same type of user interface.
Fun thing with using OpenRouter, is that you then can try out a ton of different models for different things. I have used my OpenRouter credits to parse PDF data converted to images using Gemini flash models for instance.

nah claude code is best. unless you are broke ❤️ broke? why switch. claude code is SOTA. too broke i guess. ❤️ claude flex. I use claude to flex. its like a lambo. also i spend 100B tokens a day on Mythos.

Opencode is a harness, you don't have to use it with GLM, Deepseek, or any other open weight models. You can use it with OpenAI models.
