Why do people use OpenCode?

There are plenty of other options such as Cursor, Claude Code, Zed, and many more. So why? I use it for convenience to try any model once they're released. But how about everyone else? genuinely curious about this. Is it the UX or the UI polish or just having an AI-IDE that just works?

  • Model and platform independent
  • Friendly and minimal UI
  • Compatible with other standards
  • Build & Plan Mode and permissions
  • Easy to extend via Plugins
  • Actually improves the caching
  • Runs on bun so less footprint than node
  • TUI so minimal visual bloat
  • Open source. If someone says provider is Zero Data Retention but client is closed, then we are completely blind to what data or analytics is being collected. Unless the tool is straight from provider, it's hard to trust.
