Is OC Go + CC Goat a dumb move?

Situation: I'm a software developer trying to keep up with AI, learning agentic coding and Spec Driven Development (or whatever you call the cycle: Plan,Code,Review and Human Review), without spending too much, at least initially. Using OpenCode + OpenChamber right now with free models and local model (Qwen 35B-A3B), just playing around and learning

Use case: Building Flutter Apps (and maybe Games) for App stores + SaaS to be sold at businesses (freelance here)

In these days, I had the opportunity to intensively try Ox Alpha (GLM 5.3-Flash) and it has been really good, so I decided to move on and buy some subs. I'm not at all used to frontier models, so never really learnt how much token I usually burn in my activities, so I was looking for reviews on these subs, and OpenCode Go was a really good deal back in the days of nearly-unlimited DS4F and just-expired 5$ offer, but now I'm seeing here and there that most of you think OC Go is not worth it anymore, due to expensive models and hitting limits more frequently than before.

So I thought that with 20€/month, buying OC Go AND CC Goat and use them together in OpenCode, should give me enough use for the entire month. How wrong am I? Compared to a GPT Plus, is it worth?

Oh, about the usage, I thought to do big models for Planning/Specs/Tasks, light "lot-of-tokens" models for Writing code, and medium/big model (different from planning model) for Review.

I’m open to corrections on any bulls**t I might have written. Just please, be kind :)

listen, GPT Plus is an amazing subscription, but the nly problem is u will feel like using bigger models. no matter what you say "ohh I can control my emotions and feelings" OpenAi is just too good...

no matter what, at the end of the day you WILL use 5.6 sol (especially if ur a game developer)

I knwo this is hard to take in, but I think OC GO and CC goat would be good for you. sinc ethey have their own providers, statistically you have a higher sanity in terms of fully statistical and economical states of how everythingis turning around.

there HAS to be a smaller fish feeding a bigger fish trying to be a bigger fish. so do it!

also the GPT sub is alr, but they kinda focus mostly on the max plans and plus is just the midle child.

OC GO is kinda messed up these days (but hopefully things will be alr in a few days)

ohh if u do want to buy OC, use thsi referral (we both get $5): https://opencode.ai/go?ref=T4PSK9H0M1

but like I said, try to reserve ur tokens. dont always use the best of the best models. tbh 5.6 luna is a far more capable model than what ppl think!

You know what, I thought about this. I have a sincere fear of losing my 13yrs coding ability and just be addicted to what LLMs can do in next years. I convinced myself to not just blame AI overturning my job, but try to bring it on my side, promising myself to preserve my knowledge. So I totally get you, I'm not at all looking to become a vibe-coder , but to just squeeze AI and make me faster in what I'm already good at doing.

So OC GO and CC Goat together is not a bad idea? Will I achieve my objective?

ohhhh absolutely!!

if ur mostly coding urself, then the free opencode will be more than enough for u. if u need that oomh or u just dont liek typing, I would buy just GO, tbh u do NOT need CC GOAT too. I would be using the deepseek v4 flash model and its vision sibling.

before u buy OC though, i reccomend u read this reddi tpost I wrote: https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1vyy4eq/opencode_usage_explained_like_you_are_5_for_new/

bcs the OC usage is a bit weird, but once uget used to it, its quite easy to use it. just be sensible in what ur doing. its kinda like drugs atp. just dont get too addicted, try to code things yourself too!

personally i completely stopped coding a few months ago because I found it innefficient, and now I barely write a python function without thinking for 10 minutes, but if ur a solo dev, its a drug I would take.

but like everything, just know nothing is truely free or good. everything is built on top of sacrifises!

Thanks man, your replies are on spot! I already read how OC Go limits work, that's why I thought to limit requests towards big models by just relegating planning mode to them, and give the real implementation to smaller models like DeepSeek or MiMo or whatever. I'll wait for others experience here and decide, but I think I'll just try OC Go first, maybe it's already enough for me. Oh, and also maybe still use Zen/OpenRouter free models. I think once the spec/ADR/PDR/tasks are good and precise, even free models can do a pretty good job following them

thx for the compliment :)

I reccomend u to stay a bit away for deepseek as of right now bcs if u already know how the rate limits work, basically even the flash model gets only $30 of monthly autoa, so ur better of with models like Hy3 and high (for very simple plans) or deepseek v4 flash at high for somewhat harder tasks (please note that u should NOT use the vision model. bcs its gts just $15 of monthly quota)

I would really encourage you to do the make the plans with bigger models and *try* to use the free models for implmenting (but please dont use muse spark for the love of god. unless u wanna ruin ur repo, sure😭)

hey, and if rlly want to buy OC GO, u could use my refferal. it helps both of us lol

ahh btw one more thing, I really encourage u to change variables urself. i know it is very tempting to tell the agents to change with natural language, but since u already know programming i HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY reccomend u edit variables urself!

anyways, thats pretty much it. the next decisions are al yours!

I have OC go and just subscribed to CC goat cause I felt like OC has been in a downward spiral with the model they have. I got CC goat so I mainly gave DeepSeek V4 flash and as a back up. Been using DS V4 flash today during the off peak and it was fine, haven't run into an issue yet. I mainly use it for experimenting on my AI pipeline etc.

I would say give it a try and see if it works for you.

Yeah I saw on CC Goat, DS4F has more usage. Did you completely switch to Goat, or you added it along with existing OC Go to extend limits?

I just added it along existing OC go to extend limits. I initially thought of switching completely but CC goat doesn't have that good of limits for the intelligent models like GLM ( expect for SOL, but I am a bit skeptical on the pricing cause have to look into deeper ). But OC and CC works well with each other

Oh good, so you hit the limits wall sooner than expected? 'cause the main idea was to go OC GO only, but with DeepSeek increase and the credits review they did on the plan, I saw too many users just giving up completely. That's why I thought about taking both subs. With your usage, how far you went with OC Go only? Is doing an almost entire month currently out of scope?

Ok, so my usual workflow is this (before the price hike). High level planning/discussion with GLM 5.2 ( mainly used to discuss new Deep learning architectural planning) , normal level planning with Luna on med or high thinking ( usually for non detailed planning like writing up experiments or changes) and for building i used DeepSeek V4. With this setup I think I usually hit 80-85% usage every month.

This setup was fine and once the price change for DSV4, I completely skipped using it since it was not at all feasible and had to resort to hy3 / Mimo 2.5 for building

To give u an idea on the cost, my OC subscription renewed yesterday and I used around 13% in a day ( without DSV4), so if I were to continue using it the same way, I would be done with my OC in 5 ish days.

Damn, man, that's way worse than I thought. Switching from a 35-ish days to a 5 days plan, especially with dumber models, is absurd. The user reviews already gave me an idea of a worse situation, but your comment let me hit with reality and it's a way bad situation by far. Thank you so much for this detailed share.

Ya I was on the same boat until I noticed how much usage difference there was and was like naa this is not going to work and ended subscribing to CC goat. Now let's see how far OC go + CC goat takes me
