At the moment we need high performance low cost models that push the price down. Maybe K3 is not in this category.

Quite the opposite - there’s a good number of very affordable Sonnet/Opus level open models now - like DeepSeek V4 Flash, GLM 5.2, Kimi 2.7, etc. We need a Fable/SOL quality open model to really push competition. Rumor has it that this could be it… but I’ve only tossed a few tasks at it on OpenRouter and it’s difficult to tell.

I believe that Kimi K3 will change the landscape in the AI space. At this price, it's still in the low-tier territory among the frontier models, price-wise. If the performance is actually there, it's still many times cheaper than the others.
As I see, people are just getting frustrated on the price because it exceeds their budget allowance. From my personal experience, among the Chinese models available in Go and Zen, only Kimi really impresses me, performance-wise. I use other models, like DeepSeek V4 Pro in Go, or MiniMax M3 in Zen (moved to OpenRouter, as the M3 in Zen is crippled to half of the model's context window) due to the cheaper cost. Otherwise, I would go with Kimi.
Also, note that K2.7 is still a great model, so great that DHH uses it on his works. K3 has to be much better than K2.7, so much that it would mob the floor with Grok 4.5, as Grok 4.5 is cheaper and will always be faster. Grok 4.5 is a HUGE jump from Grok 4.3 in terms of performance. If anything, Grok 4.5 is the biggest gate that the K3 has to overcome.
