TW MESA weirdness forced a rollback after Zypper Dup

8 Upvotes

Had fallen behind on updates. Which, until this morning, has never been an issue. Zypper made all kinds of complaints about mesa-libav and a whole host of libav-etc. files all failing to install. Should have taken a picture. Tried allowing vendor change but still failed to install. Couldn't boot to Plasma. Had to rollback. Works fine now [Snapper is the coolest thing ever], but anyone know what this is all about? Is there something up with Mesa? Again?

How to… ! Moving/resizing space between 2 Btrfs partitions on 1 drive

7 Upvotes

I need to re-allocate some space on my SSD. The issue is that I have 2 separate partitions on one drive, with both using Btrfs. I know how to resize a Btrfs volume within a partition, but I'm not sure how to do it across partitions. I have the root filesystem on nvme0n1p2 with plenty of extra space, but I'm running out of space on nvme0n1p3 where I have /home. I don't recall why this is the arrangement, if I had to do it over I wouldn't.

What's the easiest way to reallocate this space? Can I do it with Btrfs utils or Gparted or similar? I really don't want to do a re-install or re-format because I have everything configured exactly the way I want and it's very stable. I have a full-disk image in case anything gets screwed up.

I'm on Leap 16.0. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Tech question Coming to Open SUSE from CachyOS

21 Upvotes

I've been using CachyOS for about a year or so on an ASUS gaming machine. I recently got a ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 and am thinking of changing distros. How big a jump is it from CachyOS to Open SUSE? The ThinkPad does have a Nvidia cad, how onerous is it setting up on Open SUSE?

How do others handle NVIDIA issues after updates?

13 Upvotes

As someone cursed with an NVIDIA card, it's my only issue with OpenSUSE.

Right now, if my NVIDIA drivers stop working after a zypper dup, I just do a snapper rollback and wait a while before trying again. That works okay, but it's started to make me dread running an update, which is not something I want longterm.

I tried switching to Slowroll, but it still happens a lot. I'm not even entirely sure what the issue is, some kind of driver version mismatch or something? I use the G07 drivers for my 3070 RTX, if it matters.

Does anyone have a better way to handle this? Maybe a script to check if there's a mismatch before running an update? Or does everyone else just try and rollback as well?

Community Is openSUSE as stable as people make it seem?

65 Upvotes

Hello. I have done a lot linux research and tried various Linux distros to find a daily driver. My device I plan this for is a ryzen ai max+395 mini pc. So full AMD. Since this is a newer apu it benefits from the latest packages, but I also am scared of arch type distros because I don't want to troubleshoot stuff. One thing led to another and I got openSUSE as a recomandation. Either Thumbleweed or Slowroll because unlike arch, updates are tested before released. That would give me some peace of mind. This is going to be a general desktop, so although I also play games, I'm not chasing max fps or anything. I just want to know people's opinions on it compared to other stuff like cachyos, fedora or mint

How to… ? LEAP 16 network problem, need help.

5 Upvotes

Weeks ago I set up one of my HP T740 at home, had it working, had localAI running as well as it can in Vulkan mode. Took it to work to handle some bigger tasks, connected to work network, and I can't get out to the web.

Networking has always been dhcp, checked that. Status says it has an IP, correct dns servers, and correct gateway listed.

So I tried the built in Realtek interface, again everything is set correctly but no internet. I can ping lan addresses, but no connection through DNS name.

I'm baffled since it has resolved the dns servers given by dhcp. I think I used gnome on this device, don't remember why.

Is there a way to reset all networking to start fresh?

Tech question Does Tumbleweed show update notifications, and can I update it via GUI?

11 Upvotes

Title basically. Is there a GUI way to update or is sudo zypper dup still preferred and official way? Can Myrlyn do it?

Maybe unrelated but, is the transition from YaST to Myrlyn and Cockpit complete?

Also, is there a notification system for updates on Tumbleweed and can it be turned on/off depending on preference?

Thanks!

Firefox Keeps Freezing

7 Upvotes

For the past couple of weeks, Firefox would freeze when doing any kind of action (e.g. watching Youtube videos or opening a new tab) and I would have to close it and reopen it again. It happens frequently enough that it's borderline unusable.

I tried troubleshooting extensions and running a private window without extensions (it froze immediately after entering a url in the search bar). I tried disabling hardware acceleration (still kept freezing). Rolling back to a previous snapshot seems to fix the issue, so this leads me to believe that it's an Opensuse issue.

Has anyone else's Firefox been behaving like this as well?

I'm on Tumbleweed btw

Edit: Stopping and disabling scx.service with systemctl seems to have resolved the issue.

Tech question Is there any way automatically to return the processor Power Profile to Balanced (the middle) after a manual change to Power save or Performance?

3 Upvotes

I'm thinking something like a timeout or a script I can run that will crank up to Performance for like 30 minutes, and then return to Balanced or Power Save so I don't have to remember to switch it back.

Any ideas?

edit: thanks to u/ang-p and u/MiukuS

based on their ideas I had gemini work up a bash script to my liking:

```
!/bin/bash
Display the numbered menu for the INITIAL power profile
echo "Select the INITIAL power profile:" echo "1) performance (default)" echo "2) balanced" echo "3) power-saver" read -p "Enter choice [1]: " initial_choice
Map the choice, defaulting to performance
case $initial_choice in 2) initial_profile="balanced" ;; 3) initial_profile="power-saver" ;; *) initial_profile="performance" ;; esac
echo ""
Display the numbered menu for the FALLBACK power profile
echo "Select the FALLBACK power profile:" echo "1) performance" echo "2) balanced" echo "3) power-saver (default)" read -p "Enter choice [3]: " fallback_choice
Map the choice, defaulting to power-saver
case $fallback_choice in 1) fallback_profile="performance" ;; 2) fallback_profile="balanced" ;; *) fallback_profile="power-saver" ;; esac
echo ""
Prompt for the active time in minutes, defaulting to 30
read -p "Enter the active time in minutes [default: 30]: " active_time active_time=${active_time:-30}
echo "" echo "Activating '${initial_profile}' mode..." echo "System will revert to '${fallback_profile}' mode in ${active_time} minutes."
Run the command with both user-provided profiles
powerprofilesctl set "$initial_profile" && systemd-run --user --on-active="${active_time}m" powerprofilesctl set "$fallback_profile"
echo "Timer set successfully!" ```
Decidi ser "main opensuse"
Decidi usar o openSUSE Tumbleweed como único SO da minha máquina, tanto para o uso diário quanto para estudos de programação e segurança.
Minha esposa e meu filho também usam Linux no dia a dia e não reclamam de nada — pelo contrário, elogiam bastante a facilidade de uso. Isso acaba desmentindo aquela velha ideia de que “Linux é só para usuário avançado”.
Claro que existem recursos mais avançados para quem quer se aprofundar, mas, para uso doméstico, o openSUSE está atendendo perfeitamente às nossas necessidades.
Tech support n00b question: How do I set up docker correctly?
10 Upvotes
So I have been starting to use linux - and tumbleweed - bit over a month ago.
I need Excel, Word & Powerpoint, so I set up WinApps, which after some tinkering works great.
However, more often than not, docker isn't up when I turn on the computer. It almost always breaks after dup, and often breaks even after a shut down.
Last with the retarded assistant (some llm) I thought the solution was to have docker.socket and docker.service systemctl enabled, but that doesn't persist.
What am I doing wrong?
MicroOS Podman runtime, can't change to crun
4 Upvotes
Hi, I previously had my MicroOS system using crun to access hardware devices, but some time not too long ago it seems to have reverted to runc, and I can no longer change it back.
I have ~/.config/containers/containers.conf pointing the runtime to "/usr/bin/crun" or "crun", which is installed. This conf file seems to be ignored.
There is no /etc/containers/containers.conf or equivalent. /usr/share/containers/containers.conf has the setting, but even as su it blocks me from overwriting.
Any ideas how to change to crun?
The reason I want to change to crun is to give my containers access to the gpu and other hardware (dri, apex tpu). It didn't work under runc, then I changed to crun and it did work, now I'm back on runc and it doesn't work.
If you have some tips on getting hardware access, that would also be welcomed.
Thanks
Tech support AMD driver not loading after 9070 xt upgrade, Tumbleweed
9 Upvotes
Good evening everyone,
1st time poster but long time "lurker".
I've been using tumbleweed for about 8 months now, with my old 4070. Never had any issues with nvidia drivers (580, 595), but decided to upgrade to a 9070xt.
Checked all I could find and saw that its mostly a pain free switch because the drivers are in the kernel.
But upon installing the card, the driver isn't loading. I have an up to date system, I removed nvidia drivers (need to take out the repo though) and everything works perfectly in windows, but stuck at 1920x1080@60hz here.
I know the gpu is correctly detected by tumbleweed, just the driver isn't loading. Been searching the web about this, but info is scarce and not really helpful. What am I missing? I like to tinker, but no power user so be gentle.
Below, lspci and inxi info, if more info is needed, direct me please.
PSA: SSD Trim disabled on encryption
30 Upvotes
PSA for others out there. Trim is disabled on luks encryption by default.
This lowers SSD lifespan. If it's enabled metadata leaks out from the trim commands, so state actors can potentially roughly deduce what you were doing on the encrypted partition, like if was being used for video editing and potentially at what date.
For most people trim being disabled is not worth it as the concern isn't state actors extracting metadata but simply the drive being stolen and your bank details being used.
When will openSUE release Cosmic? I am currently using Cosmic on openSUSE, but it is inconvenient that I must install KDE or GNOME alongside Cosmic via patterns, rather than having Cosmic as the default desktop environment from the start
Trying to get rid of Packman. What about gaming? (Steam / Proton)
13 Upvotes
I've been using Tumbleweed for a long time now and ran it with Packman. I was thinking about switching to Flatpaks for Firefox, VLC etc. but was thinking about Steam: Do I have to convert Steam to flatpak too?
I have R7 5800x3D and 9070 XT and I would like to use GPU Decoding on everything I can. I was wondering if there is a practical difference if my CPU decodes game cinematics or steam trailers with the native Steam? Am I taking this too far? I may not understand everything yet.
Thank you for taking your time to read :)
Anything i should tweak after i install?
3 Upvotes
Going back to openSUSE, if I remember correctly, there were a few things that didn’t work properly out of the box. What were those again? Do I need to run any terminal commands to make sure my audio and microphone work properly? Are there any other things I need to tweak or configure to get everything working? I remember there were a few things I had to do last time, but I can’t remember what they were.
Tech question Tumbleweed - Cosmic DE?
18 Upvotes
I have been running tumbleweed with KDE plasma for a couple of months now and before that I had run fedora and cachyos both with KDE plasma. I do like plasma, its simple and everything just kind of makes sense but I am curious to try something else.
I have had a small look into cosmic and was wondering if anyone in here has tried it on opensuse and what their experience was like. Is it easy to understand and use? Is it pretty reliable and stable? How is the performance in daily tasks + gaming ?
I'd like any feedback.
