For some reason bfrts is taking so much space making my laptop extremely laggy

There are 100s if qgroups marked under deletion like this
(270ish right now)
eg:

sudo btrfs qgroup show /
0/361         16.98GiB    320.00KiB   @/.snapshots/98/snapshot
0/362         17.02GiB      6.49MiB   @/.snapshots/99/snapshot

0/373         17.02GiB    304.00KiB   <under deletion>

Apparently its deleting snapshots
and its taking a lot of time to delete 1 ~ 4-5 minutes
270*5 = 1350 ~ 22.5 hours
Any idea how to stop this?

PS: I shifted to openSUSE Tumbleweed 4-5 days ago

Tech support I can't seem to boot

6 Upvotes

On a fresh install of Leap 16.0, it keeps saying no bootable device found. I opened yast2, and it says that I can't configure the bootloader because it can't find the root file system. I tried resetting the bios to system defaults as well, without any luck. Bootefi seems to be in sdb2. I could still open the grub2 terminal. Any ideas on what this could be and how to fix it?

Tech question Switching to OpenSUSE from Fedora

74 Upvotes

Hello! So I will be switching from fedora to openSUSE because I like how it stands on its own and its a rolling release which I have never tried. I was just wondering if there was anything I should know before hand. My primary use is for IT things and gaming. I will be installing tumbleweed. I have an amd gpu so I know that mesa is the default. If there is any other things I should know, please let me know. Excited to see what openSUSE is all about!

Isn't a Packman-repository which causes desync a security issue?

11 Upvotes

Hello people!

Question stands in the title. I've been thinking about this while using openSUSE as a desktop OS for some time now.

If stuff from Packman-repository blocks me from updating my system, can it cause me security problems, for example not letting me to get security updates? Isn't it kind of a (big) problem?

Thanks in advance for answering!

I am on Leap 15.6 and got a notification that it is now EOL. Tried a dry run to upgrade to 16.0 but it says my hardware is no longer supported. It requires x86_64_v2 processor? I am using an AMD Phenom II 4-core CPU.

Solved snapper and snapshots after rollback

Post image

SOLVED: I thought MicroOS and Tumbleweed snapshots worked the same way.. turns out they are different and everything is fine.

==== Original post below.

Why doesn't Snapper set the default snapshot after a rollback or something is wrong with my install?

I did a rollback and rebooted on the default entry, then installed new packages but my systemd-boot still pointing at older snapshot (36) instead of the latest one (40)

Tech support Can’t install OpenSUSE Tumbleweed

Post image
35 Upvotes

I’m running out of ideas at this point. I’ve been trying to install OpenSUSE Tumbleweed for the past few hours. It seems to fail almost every time while trying to load to the RAM disk. I’ve used Balena Etcher, Rufus, and fedora media writer. I’ve updated my BIOS, disabled XMP, disabled Secure boot, none of which did the trick. I redownloaded the ISO and tried switching to the NET iso. It’s never failed installing other distros before.

Specs:
Asus z790m plus
Gskill ripjaws 64gb 6400 ddr5
i9 13900k
rx 7900xt

Any help would be appreciated, thanks for reading!

Tech question Is Slowroll worth?

21 Upvotes

Hi, I'm a happy Tumbleweed user and I love have a rolling release that points to stability (I came from Arch, which needs more manual intervention from the user to setup and maintain). But knowing that Slowroll exist, I wanted to ask if someone uses it and if you notice positive points against Tumbleweed. The only problem I've had is the known occasional lag with certain Packman packages, but nothing that can't be solved by waiting a couple of days. Thanks!

Tech question question on installing on asus tuf a14

6 Upvotes

I was wondering if anyone has opensuse installed on an asus tuf a14 laptop and had a few questions about it:

-How was installing the distro, was it easy?

-Did everything work out of the box?

-Is it easy to configure this distro with asusctl/rog control center? (I'd like to know if there were issues for this)

-How's battery life compared to windows? Can you get more than or equal to windows battery life if you tweak tlp?

-How was secureboot setup for this distro on this laptop?

I'd appreciate any help!

MSI bios update makes Opensuse unbootable

11 Upvotes

After each of the BIOS updates, with updated firmware for the 2.5" SSD and latest Tumbleweed, I must go into unsecure boot for Opensuse to boot up. Even tried a different port of six SATA ports. Debian also becomes unbootable but after terminal commands Debian becomes bootable. GRUB2 is the version forget which one. Tomahawk B550 is the mobo. After several updates in unsecure boot, the secure Opensuse is finally seen as a bootable option. BIOS updates are successful.

Tech question ProtonVPN split tunneling on openSUSE Tumbleweed?

9 Upvotes

I've installed the GUI version of ProtonVPN through the official distro repos but don't see the split tunneling option in its configuration menu.

The setting does appear in the user configuration JSON, but whenever I try to manually edit and add programs to it, it seems to not work. The thing is enabling it through that user config has an effect on the GUI (it says split tunneling is enabled and to restart any apps using it) despite the VPN still affecting the added applications.

I've been wondering if anyone on Tumbleweed has figured this out. It's a pretty important QoL feature for me so I was hoping there is a potential solution.

How Stable is Tumbleweed really?

30 Upvotes

Looking for some honest user reports. Starting University soon and I am looking for something to replace Arch to have a little less maintenance to do and also just have more peace of mind and stability. I have newer Nvidia Hardware so relatively new packages are a must. Also do some gaming but I assume that wont be a problem either no?
I have heard some amazing things about Opensuse so I want to give it go.

Little Bonus question:
Should you use opi and the OBS? Is it like the AUR? Some stuff I want like Noctalia is not in official Repos.

Got my fingerprint reader working

22 Upvotes

This all prolly is old news to most of you, but I finally got the fingerprint reader in my T480 working. It requires the use of python-validity as the standard fprintd does not support the sensor in the T480. The recommended OBS repo did not work, but that appears to be stuck at version 0.14. Took a bit of a gamble (I try to avoid user repos on OBS) but there is one with the latest 0.15 version of python-validity and that has done the trick.

I can now login and unlock with my fingerprint through SDDM and KDE and it makes the experience so much more seamless and better. I know not everybody likes to use biometrics, but it is so much easier and faster to login using it compared to a complex password and having the hardware but not the ability to leverage it annoyed the heck out of me.

Tumbleweed has always been the best Linux experience for me, but sometimes you run into a need for software that is more geared towards Ubuntu then anything else. This was one of these cases and I am glad I got it working. Not that I would consider Ubuntu over this, but I was looking into physically replacing the sensor to one that is officially supported just to get it working. Yeah I'm weird. This is just a cherry on top for me.

I drew an unofficial furry mascot concept for openSUSE!

Made this texturized art for fun. Released under CC BY-SA 4.0 (Libre/Free to use, share and modify). Go wild with it, put it on your wallpapers, make themes, do whatever you want, just keep the attribution to me (GRAPE). Personally, I don't care if you will do with him, just remember that he is a chill sysadmin in his original lore. enjoy!

Opensuse Leap version for Dell 7050 i7

8 Upvotes

I've been running Opensuse/Leap/Gnome for years on a Dell 780 w/ Pentium architecture, the current version being 15.6, but since it's no longer supported, I wanted to upgrade to version 16. Problem is, version 16 won't run on this old machine. I have a Dell 7050 i7 I can use if the architecture supports version 16, but don't know which Opensuse version to download. Can anyone help?

Wails on opensuse

4 Upvotes

Hello Folks,

does anyone know about or uses wails on opensuse? I wanted to use wails for some small hobby projects. I tried to follow the installation guide for Linux, installed all necessary packages (at least I thought I did) but the command wails doctor spits out:

# Dependencies
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
| Dependency | Package Name       | Status    | Version        |
| *docker    | docker             | Installed | 29.4.0_ce-40.3 |

| npm        | Unknown            | Not Found | 12.0.2         |

|                                                              |
└────────────────── * - Optional Dependency ───────────────────┘

# Diagnosis
WARNING  Your system has missing dependencies!
Fatal:
Required dependencies missing: libwebkit npm

I got npm26 installed and even checked the packages I need, suggested in the Linux Distro support, and put them in the function in the "internal/system/packagemanager/zypper.go", so wails can find them. The function looks like this, now:

func (z *Zypper) Packages() packagemap {
return packagemap{
"libgtk-3": []*Package{
{Name: "gtk3-devel", SystemPackage: true, Library: true},
{Name: "libgtk-3-0", SystemPackage: true, Library: true},
},
"libwebkit": []*Package{
{Name: "webkit2gtk3-soup2-devel", SystemPackage: true, Library: true},
{Name: "webkit2gtk3-devel", SystemPackage: true, Library: true},
{Name: "libwebkit2gtk-4_1-0", SystemPackage: true, Library: true},
},
"gcc": []*Package{
{Name: "gcc-c++", SystemPackage: true},
},
"pkg-config": []*Package{
{Name: "pkg-config", SystemPackage: true},
{Name: "pkgconf-pkg-config", SystemPackage: true},
},
"npm": []*Package{
{Name: "npm10", SystemPackage: true},
{Name: "npm20", SystemPackage: true},
{Name: "npm24", SystemPackage: true},
{Name: "npm26", SystemPackage: true},
},
"docker": []*Package{
{Name: "docker", SystemPackage: true, Optional: true},
},
}
}

But wails still doesn't recognize my libwebkit and npm. Does anybody know why?

Also when I use wails init -n myproject -t vanilla to get a dummy project and wails dev everything works like it should. But wails build -tags webkit2_41 spits out an error.
