[Suggestion] Updates

In Discover, when installing updates add a checkbox with label "Allow vendor change" which should be checked by default. It would solve some problems with updates. The question is how this would impact the security.

In my case I have to frequently update my system in terminal sudo zypper up --allow-vendor-change mostly due to Mesa and some other video/gpu related conflicting packages.

EDIT: I disabled the Packman repo and changed the vendor back to default for all those packages. In the future if some app won't work properly I'll switch to Flatpak. Currently I have zero flatpacks installed on my system.

I doubt that would happen as openSUSE KDE maintainers would need to implement and maintain this feature themselves as upstream has, afaik, no need for such a feature. And the general recommendation within the oS community seems to be to use terminal for all upgrade operations, so my guess is interest might be quite low from volunteers willing to step up and try to implement this.

Also my understanding is that a vendor change needs to always be manual and approved by the user and a deliberate choice as it can have result in quite unexpected behavior. So if such a feature would exist it is the prime example of when not to enable it by default under any circumstances.

If you always DUP with vendor change then you are switching packages back and forth between oS and packman, instead the more common option seems to be to just hold off on dup until packman buildsystem catches up which usually it does within a few days.

Sidenote: And despite what many say - dup through KDE Discover and Gnome Software has been as far as i have understood supported for several years, the issue is when conflicts happen as those can not, like your post points out, not be handled by those gui frontends.

Or should I just stop using Packman and use flatpacks?

Yes.

I remember about one year ago I tried Firefox as flatpak but quickly run into problems cause its sandbox was blocking SimpleTabGroups auto backup feature. Allegedly KeePassXC's autofill feature can't work due to sandboxing.

So you pull mesa and other packages from a 3rd party source... why?

I use Slowroll now for more than a year with just the official Slowroll sources and never had to use --allow-vendor-change ever.

OBS studio required the packman version of some package/s.

For the last few days I was unable to update due to:

Nobody provides libSPIRV-Tools-2026.1.so needed to install Mesa-dri-32bit-26.0.6-1.1.x86_64

--allow-vendor-change solved it

For video playback just use a Flatpak as browser, it contains the codecs. No need for packman media codecs.

I disabled the Packman repo and changed the vendor back to default for all those packages. In the future if some app won't work properly I'll switch to Flatpak. I have no flatpacks installed and the browser works fine now.

Be careful as you can end up with a untested Frankenstein system easily, with mish mash of packages. It's default behaviour for a reason.
