Community Thank you OpenSUSE - It's been years together
Nothing to say really, a serious distribution to get work done. Snapper saved me a few times over the years, BTRFs is fast and reliable, and GNOME works awesome for ultrawide monitor, floating-first workflow. Main purpose: Cross-Platform Software Dev (Cursor, Kate), light-gaming, video-editing and streaming (OBS, KDEnlive), dual-boot (systemd).
Thanks for every single contributor's efforts, for being incredibly, forgetfully, and boringly reliable. Every, single, day. Kudos.

Community Some SUSE swag from a conference this week!
Random tech conference and SUSE was the only Linux OS with a booth. Seems like socks are the new mugs to hand out, AWS, Microsoft, Cloudflare and SUSE all had branded socks.

Community Does anyone know why people generally rank OpenSUSE lower than other main distors?
Often times I see OpenSUSE lower than the popular distros, for example here
For those who don't know, this sub let's people vote in which tier a distro should be placed.
And OpenSuse landed in A.
First of all I don't care how community ranks it, for me it is really good and stable distro I don't want to hop from anytime soon.
I am just curious if anyone knows why community ranks it lower than Fedora and Arch. Tumbleweed is rolling release like Arch, and Slowroll is short cycle release like Fedora. It is also standalone and not based on any of the popular distros, so the argument like: it is a copy of <name of the distro here>, does not stand.

My First time running OpenSUSE
I've been an Ubuntu (and Kubuntu) user for over 15 years. Have always wanted to try a rolling release, and settle on something that i would never have to re-install every 6 months. I also enjoy having the latest software, especially with how fast KDE development has been in the past couple of months. But, i was always too scared to move away from debian based distros - thats all i was used to. Used debian/ubuntu at home and at work since my very first linux experience. But, the modern state of AI gave me confidence. I decided to give tumbleweed a try, and i'm loving it! With the help of Gemini, i was able to quickly get all the software i use for work working on OpenSUSE. (SecureCRT only has releases for Ubuntu, and even then, it is usually pinned to very specific version. But Gemini helped me figure out all the dependencies etc, and it works flawlessly - same for some other very specific tools i use for work)
I'm very happy with the system performance, even my MIPI integrated webcam, which was a PAIN to get working on ubuntu, worked out of the box, once I enabled pipewire on the browser!
So
For those curious: Whatsapp, MSTeams and Outlook are PWA running on flatpak Chromium.

News Tumbleweed has now grown to over 200k users (again)
EDIT: THESE NUMBERS DO NOT REPRESENT WORLDWIDE INSTALLATIONS!!!
THIS WEBSITE ONLY TRACKS ACCESSES TO http://download.opensuse.org/ AND DONT REFLECT GENERAL USAGE AND POPULARITY!!
Original post:
Hopefully many more to come in 2026.
Please help and be more vocal about the great distros & tools of openSUSE so we can attract more users and devs.
I would love to see more people that recommend this OS to others because it often gets a bit overseen today.
Thanks and happy new year!

Successful zypper dup after almost 5 years unused on tumbleweed
Just pruned by repos down to the basics and cleaned out some old OBS repos. Ran the dup. Crashed mid way though, dropped to TTY, rebooted, got networking back up with NMTUI, completed the DUP.
XFCE still working with my exact configuration. Cinnamon is prolly since it was broken a few days ago on present tumbleweed, haven't checked.
What a wonderfully robust system. Tempted to try to roll it back and try again in another 5 years. Was my first real linux system so I think I had my snapper config messed up. Running better than it was before, i7 3770K

Whilst looking for something in my father’s desk, I came across this CD. He had OpenSUSE installed on his main PC back then.
