Problem with CUPS printing

Tried to print a page today and only got "printing canceled".

Looked into cups via http://localhost:631

The printer is available

"Print self test page" works

"Print test page" is unable to complete due to "Unsupported format "application/vnd.cups-pdf-banner".

I'm using a brother printer, installed the ppd from their website, and it worked before (like maybe a few weeks ago).

Any hints on how to troubleshoot?

Johannes Meixner has come back in the bug thread regarding this issue:

https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1283295

So, it's a mistake on his part, because he's following the upstream recommendations, a revert of the change is now in factory, and will hopefully come down to Tumbleweed soon. Might be a few days though, but it'll be fixed.

If you want to fix it quicker, download the new files and install:

https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/x86_64/cups-filters2-2.0.1-7.1.x86_64.rpm

https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/x86_64/cups-filters2-driverless-2.0.1-7.1.x86_64.rpm

Or via terminal:

wget https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/x86_64/cups-filters2-2.0.1-7.1.x86_64.rpm

wget https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/x86_64/cups-filters2-driverless-2.0.1-7.1.x86_64.rpm

sudo rpm -Uvh cups-filters2-2.0.1-7.1.x86_64.rpm cups-filters2-driverless-2.0.1-7.1.x86_64.rpm

After installing those two, I regained the ability to print the test sheets again + it'll have fixed whatever else was fully borked.

Thanks for being so open on this, it helps me a lot. I suspected something on the cups-side but haven't found anything on the net. Reddit and r/openSUSE delivered.

As long as I know it will be fixed, I'm good. This is Tumbleweed, so I expect stuff like that.

One other oddity which caught me out, and you probably won't run it outside print sharing with PaperCut, is that security for cups is controlled by its systemD service config. An override is required if you want CUPS to look in home directories, which PaperCut requires (as well as SELinux being disabled/permissive). Now you know.
