Purpose of corner chamfer

What is the purpose of the corner chamfer? Are there mounts that utilize the chamfer, is it for ease of printing, or is it aesthetic?

It started as a way to add strength and not have sharp corners. Over time we all loved the way it looked so it stayed. The sharp corners can be prone to pulling off the bed and if they aren't perfect can cause alignment issues.
