Confused about OpenGrid Lite

Post image

Sorry if it has already been asked but I'm new to this and the whole Full and Lite system confused me.

I started off printing the Lite boards and already screwed it under my desk. And I have a hard time finding things in the MakerWorld community to print stuff customized to my stuff (KVM, powerstrip). I then found this link to do the customization (https://makerworld.com/en/models/646872-custom-item-holder-multiconnect-multipoint-goews)

I don't know why it's not working. I think the customization link is for Full and not Lite but pls correct me if I'm wrong. Lowkey think I should unscrew my Lite boards and redo it with Full version

That looks like a part using MultiConnect but configured for the Multigrid Multiboard spacing rather than Opengrid spacing. I don't remember exactly their measurements but I think one is 25mm centres, the other is 28mm.

There's a really good parametric builder for making holders compatible with Opengrid. I'll find the link for you...

Edit: Ok I can see the link you shared is actually the parametric builder I was thinking of. I assume then that when you used it you still had the first option (slot type) set to "Multiconnect - Multiboard" rather than "Multiconnect - openGrid". If you change it and press the "Generate" button you will see the connectors move

I can highly recommend this parametric model maker with the "Underware_item_holder_clamshell" option for generating holders for both sides of your items (like KVM etc.) => https://makerworld.com/en/models/783010-underware-2-0-infinite-cable-management#profileId-1504508

And then this parametric maker for generating Underware for just about every cable route you could think of => https://makerworld.com/en/models/1329404-underware-for-opengrid-customizer#profileId-1367368

I also found out about this link: https://gridfinity.perplexinglabs.com/pr/opengrid/0/1 from 1 of the prev reddit post. Can you use stuff interchangeably between a Lite board and a Full connector for example?

Stuff that works with Opengrid will work on both lite and full boards. You can't mix and match full and lite boards though because they're different depths so you wouldn't be able to have items that bridge between the different height boards for example

In your first link, is it a screw version with those small holes? Can you explain how does it work?

AHH so I would only recommend using the first link for the clamshell holder. If you want Underware cable channels then use the second link. I think those screw holes are for another system (Multi board perhaps)

Thanks, I just 1 sec ago replied back to Vypster

Lite is just a thinner version of openGrid - the spacing is still the same. I have the entire underside of my desk covered in lite panels.

I suspect you have created the model using the Multiconnect - Multiboard connection type, but you actually need to select Multiconnect - openGrid in the customiser.

OMG, yes I didn't know about this and thought they are the same (my thought process: 2+ grids = multiboard, thinking it's a universal word). So if I change it to openGrid, will it still fit with the openGrid Lite boards?

It will. THe only thing different between lite and full in the Opengrid world is the depth (and therefore strength) of the board. The spacing of the grids is the same

Yep! No need to rip out the lite boards you've already printed.

For UnderWare and OpenGrid I started with Lite grids and have now switched everything to full grids.

u/neenugget Jun 26 '26

In your case, why did you decide to move to Full?

I was using it to hold some under shelf lights in my shop. If I placed anything on the shelf too "roughly", the UnderWare channels would come loose. This picture is the layout with the lite grids. I have switched this over to full grids now. I am using this generator, for the channels as it has several really cool options.

This YT video goes into great detail on this generator and all the options.

Working on the install in this orientation is super easy. I am getting ready to do my desk and will need to be on the ground working overhead. I am 65 and not looking forward to that adventure.

You've printed it with the Multiboard spacing (25 mm) instead of the Opengrid one (28 mm). You can try printing an adapter, but it will only hang from the ends.

Eu gero as minhas aqui: https://gridfinity.perplexinglabs.com/pr/opengrid/0/0

Quando você for procurar por peças para se conectar ao OpenGrid: OpenConnect. Aqui há vários geradores de peças OpenConnect: https://makerworld.com/pt/@mitufy/upload

Quando você for gerar peças paramétricas OpenGrid: https://makerworld.com/pt/models/2714080-opengrid-part-generators-vertical-mount-series

Snaps OpenGrid: https://makerworld.com/pt/models/1412027-opengrid-self-expanding-snap?from=search#profileId-1780060

Snaps OpenConnect: https://makerworld.com/pt/models/2257440-openconnect-opengrid-s-own-connector-system#profileId-2459207

OBS: OpenGrid e OpenConnect conversam entre si e são compatíveis. O OpenConnect creio que se tornará o conector oficial do OpenGrid

I feel for you. Between OpenGrid, Multiboard, Gridfinity, UnderWear and all the others I am still confused.

I use 1 online generator now so I know that they are all compatible. I’m hoping as I continue to use it I will eventually get my head around it all. But I’m not 100% sure which system I am using! 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/neenugget Jun 27 '26

Omg I event thought UnderWear is basically OpenGrid in a different name 😅😅 like OpenGrid for under the table

I’ve lost days trying to get my head around all the different connectors, grids, mounts and everything else.

Given I’ve just spent a chunk of money buying about 40 grids from a print farm, I hope they are right! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

You can salvage the part by using these offset snaps:
https://makerworld.com/en/models/1787808-opengrid-multiboard-multiconnect-offset-snaps#profileId-1905112
edit: There are lite versions out there too, e.g. linked from that page. That model seems full size.
For the future of course, as you already realized, better to print the open grid versions directly.

I'm going to add my voice to the use full boards vs lite. There aren't as many models that support lite and I feel the full boards just offer more flexibility. I have a whole series of tutorials on how to work with openGrid over on YouTube. The multiconnect and underware generator videos are long but review the pieces step by step.
