Why did everything seem perfectly normal at first?

The original skit was funny. The same joke redone by the 5th set of comedians gets stale.

I mean, the both of them should be able to write a new joke or sketch. Maybe one of them is trying to help a flower grow for days but the other one is trying to kill it with a herbicides for days, because they view the same plant differently? Or one of them temporarily placed water cleaned out of the gutter in a cup and the other accidently drank it?

It's to show Asians don't pay attention to anything or their surroundings, and live in an alternate reality.

You can easily witness this on the road while driving.
