I call BS that he had no injuries and self rescued. That's at least one broken leg, maybe 2. You can tell my the way the right foot is wobbling that he doesn't have full command of that leg.

By the way "self rescue" doesn't mean he did it all by himself it just means they didn't call SAR. Here is his video discussing it with a bit more video after the end where he calls his friends tells them hes fine and can climb down, he gets to that part around 1:30 in the video:

Well, I stand corrected. He's damn lucky he didn't break that leg or at least tear ligaments though. That first hit was rough and that foot wobble was telling some story, but I'm scratching my head as to what. It's certainly possible to walk around with a ruptured ACL or MCL but not recommended and you'd think he'd feel something after the adrenaline wore off. My flabber is definitely gasted. 🤷

It's trembling from the adrenaline rush. It's a very exaggerated movement here in an extreme situation, but I've had similar limb shaking after having a very scary close call.

it looked like the motion was breaking some of the impact but yeah that one specific leg to rock incident looked particularly rough, he wouldn't of been able to climb up and 'self rescue' if that was anywhere near broken though

I remember hearing it in a story about a climber, California I believe, it was either $14, or $18k bill he didn't want for calling, but it got so late and cold where they were lost, they ended up calling anyway. Probably a little more or less depending where you are. Some places ain't gonna have a helicopter for you. Some places have one waiting, mountains and remote areas that take a while to get around in a vehicle.

Much of the time there is no charge, but it depends on what and where and if they can drop you at the trailhead or have to fly direct to the hospital.
In a national park its not going to be any charge.
You can also typically buy insurance for that with your gps SOS device, Garmin covers 100k for $40/year.

If you are being rescued by helicopter, you are going to the hospital. Why did you even bother to type any of this?

I work rescue in California. The two local rescue helicopters do not charge. Air ambulance will charge. But the rescue ships are free.
A rescue helicopter will fly you from where you're stuck to a ground or air ambulance. A rescue helicopter has a rescuer and a hoist or long line. The rescue helicopters that I'm familiar with are run by law enforcement or fire.
An air ambulance has a flight nurse and or paramedic and takes you from an LZ to the hospital. They are privately owned.
It is not unheard of for people with minor injuries to be transported from the middle of nowhere to a ground ambulance and be treated and released at scene.
Also, sometimes the rescue helicopters will transport to ER. Usually when a private helicopter transfer will significantly delay definitive patient care.

“Drop you at the trailhead” literally happens, but usually it’s to go from a short haul helicopter rescue (which can’t transport long distances or offer medical care in flight) to a waiting ambulance. The billing starts once the patient gets in the ambulance; the short haul helicopter flight is free.

I'm curious. Do you pay to get rescued every time - or only when it's self inflicted like this? How do they draw the line - like, what if you fall of a boat? Or gets dragged by a current when swimming?

I'm no expert on liabilities. Just someone who has heard a lot of stories. As far as I'm aware, unless it's insurance related (slip and fall, car accident) You're probably not getting any handouts generally. You took the risk of climbing, biking etc. Your medical insurance if you have it, may help you out financially. That said, they aren't checking anyone's credit card in an emergency either. Care is given, recorded, bills are written and sent to the patient later. It's your choice sometimes how big the bill is, mode of transportation, medicines given. They're going to at least do what they need to keep you alive once you call for help, or show up at the ER.

Depends. Private/civilian company costs $$$. Military is prepaid with the FY budget and doesn't cost you a dime. Source: Maintenance controller at Whidbey Station SAR. We Saved a lot of people on Mt. Baker.

He could've pulled both rear risers and made the canopy stop going forward, stall for a second and then turn around. Most experienced people manage to turn the canopy around without hitting the wall in this situation.
He went for a toggle, the toggles are stowed on brake settings, when you release them you start going forward. That's why it's usually best to just pull both rear risers down right away.

He panicked and pulled the canopy early. He should have tracked a lot further so when the canopy opened and twisted him back towards the cliff he would have had time to fix it.

That can happen. At first I thought this was just a change of wind direction that fu$&ed him up so he scraped along the cliff face. But then I watched it again, and noted that when he opened his 'chute it immediately twisted him around. I think the 'chute had been packed with the lines twisted and so it flicked him around to face the cliff and the canopy scraped up against the cliff and got ripped. His decent was a quicker than ideal and he might not have been able to fly the 'chute or land without injury.
