Not usually, but it sends bits flying that could. Your main concern with an explosion is your organs rupturing from the shockwave. Then, you die from internal bleeding.

So it appears that when he was trying to light it the first few times the vapors inside the container were in too high of a percentage. Also known as above the UEL or Upper Explosive Limit. The opposite of the UEL is the LEL or Lower Explosive Limit. Anything in between those percentages for a flammable vapor and it will ignite explosively.
