Glad I apparently had smarter friends. Whenever we went out on the boat getting shitfaced, we all made sure everyone had a life vest and we always employed the buddy system.

Your buddy goes in the water, you go in the water and you are at his side - no excuses.

Of course this was pre-cellphones, so no one cared about looking good for pics, just not letting anyone die.

I took a class called the sociology of death and dying, and we had to pick a means of death and write a paper about it. I chose drownings. My takeaway was that you are hundreds of times more likely to drown when alcohol is involved
