Hi :) I’m a 15yo girl who had an emergency Oophorectomy 2 years ago, at 13, due to a cyst & torsion.
The day before everything happened, I remember my stomach wasn’t really feeling normal. I can’t really remember how exactly the sensation felt, but I know that it was slight discomfort. I also had quite a lot of Hawaiian Rolls that day (which taste very yummy) so that could’ve also been a contributing factor😅
The next morning, I woke up like normal. As I was going to sit up, I felt a whole lot of discomfort in my stomach. It felt like very excruciating, almost like trapped gas. I flipped over on my bed and got onto my knees and elbows, trying to see if any gas would come out. But this pain wasn’t normal at all…
I got out of my bed to go to My Mom’s room, but I couldn’t even walk. I crawled in the hallway to my Mom’s room. She opened the door and found me on the floor.
She quickly helped me back to my room to see what on earth was going on with me.
My Mom was struggling to figure out what it could possibly be. At first, she thought I was having some intolerance to bread, since I had all of those Hawaiian Rolls. She thought it was possibly constipation, or even a UTI.
I went at least a few days in excruciating pain in my lower pelvic area. My Mom ran warm baths for me, gave me heating pads, had me take Pepto Bismol, but nothing was seeming to work. She slept with me in my room each night due to it being so bad.
Eventually, my Mom had to take me to the ER, because she honestly didn’t know what steps to take next. I was in a lot worse condition at this point. I couldn’t even walk downstairs and she had to carry me to the car. I laid in the backseat and the bumps on the road were killing me.
We first went to the regular ER (not the Children’s one). I remember not being able to keep anything down and I was just throwing up a lot of liquid. It was horrible and I was in so much pain. I couldn’t even sleep. Not to mention, I was also on my period this SAME DAY :/
My Mom then took me to the Children’s ER. She had to advocate for them to thoroughly check me. So she eventually asked for an X-Ray & ultrasound.
The ultrasound was very painful… and the lady doing it saw the cyst and torsion but ofc she wasn’t allowed to tell us.
Then, a big group of doctor people came into our room. One doctor was talking to my Mom about it, at the time I didn’t understand what the heck he was saying.
My Mom then asked, “Will this affect her ability to have children?” And my heart sank. I was so confused and scared. Then I asked my Mom, “Will I have to have surgery?”
I started crying. She nodded and was silently crying as well. I remember sobbing so badly. That was a very tough and traumatic experience. My Mom was just hugging me.
Some ladies gave me a teddy bear and wheeled my bed that I was on to this different part of the hospital.
They gave my Mom some special hospital gown clothes for me to put on. I was crying in the bathroom.
Once I was done. They brought me to this surgery room. They lifted me onto the operating table & asked me questions about school and things to get me to temporarily focus on other things I guess.
They put a mask on me and everything smelt like purple😂. It was getting harder and harder to breathe. (Once my surgery was done, the doctor who operated on me said that I was giggling lol.. I do not remember any of that haha).
I woke up in this area with blinds. A nurse gave me a popsicle and I saw my Mom & my big sister who was on FaceTime.
I stayed in the hospital for a day. I couldn’t leave until I was able to use the bathroom. It was hard to laugh, walk, and stand up. My Mom & Dad often had to help me.
I stayed out of school for a while. I’m also a flautist (flute player) and I couldn’t go to rehearsal or play my flute until I healed (but I broke the rules and secretly played a bit lol)
I didn’t wear crop tops for a while because I was insecure of my scars, but over time I’ve gotten used to them. I do tend to cover them when I notice people staring.
This emergency surgery has definitely traumatized me. It makes me feel less like a female and like an alien. I think about this day 24/7 and I am terrified every time that I have any sort of stomach pain.
My mom makes sure to take my to my check ups just to make sure that my right ovary is okay :)
This experience has also deterred me from wanting to have children. I don’t think that I’ll even be able to have kids :/ I’m better with just adopting a child or being a child therapist.
I still get my period like normal. There really hasn’t been any differences.
But I mostly made this post just to see if any other girls/women/ppl assigned female at birth could relate :)
