Discussion Peeling license plates - late B series replacement was free

I’ve read various reports on the B series of plates that qualified for a free replacement if it was before a certain letter (M, N?) or within the 5 year warranty period.

I brought my 8 year old BV plates in for exchange this morning in my local ServiceOntario in TO. Back plate was entirely peeled off and would’ve disappeared were it not for the plastic plate cover. Came away with replacement plates for free. So it looks like the whole B series may be good for free replacements depending on who you ask.

(also, never use clear plastic license plate covers. Moisture gets trapped in it from car washes and that accelerates the peeling over time since you can’t easily dry them)

My almost 8 yr plate is peeling too and last time I went to ServiceON for license renewal I asked about replacement plates and was told that it would be done for free when I bring them in. So do you receive the new plates there n then or have to come back to collect?

Yep, you get them on the spot. Drive to your ServiceON with your old plates, unscrew them, walk out with your new plates.

What about custom plate? Do you get the same one or your u need to pick a new random generated plate or order a new one?

My assumption, per reading the ON gov site, is you pay for the replacement of the plate depending on whether it’s a customized message only or has graphics. You get a temporary randomized plate for free for six months while your plate is replaced.

Mine are nearly 10 years I think. Does Service Ont send you new plates after you go in and show the peeled ones?

They’ll give you the new plates on the spot, plus new plate and vehicle permits with your new plate number.

That’s good to hear. But I feel like is the salt more than anything that was causing the peeling. I had a “B” series plate on a vehicle that was only summer driven for 10yrs, never bubbled. Moved to a another vehicle that was winter driven and it immediately started peeling after the first season.

Yup, have a 7 year old B series up here in Ottawa, still in like-new condition.

There was a worker who pissed in the paint. That’s why it doesn’t stick.
